For recurring screenshots, the most reliable approach is to complete the site’s consent flow once in a dedicated browser profile, save its state, and load that state for each scheduled capture. In Playwright, use storageState to preserve cookies and local storage. If you only need a clean presentation image, you can instead hide a known banner with screenshot-only CSS—but that does not record consent.
Choose the right approach for the screenshot’s purpose

Do not create a guessed cookie or local-storage flag to make a banner disappear. The correct key and value depend on the site and its CMP; without that information, there is no universal consent key to recommend.
Save a real consent state in Playwright
Use a one-time setup run to load the site, make the appropriate choice through its consent interface for the profile you are testing, then save browser state. The scheduled job loads that state into its browser context. Playwright’s authentication documentation describes saving and reusing browser state with storageState, including cookies and local storage.
1. Create and save the state
For example, create a setup script that opens the target page, lets you interact with its consent UI, and writes the resulting state to a private file:

await browser.close();Make sure the scheduled job creates the context with the saved file rather than silently starting a fresh context. Test the state against the actual site, domain, and path: the site’s implementation determines what is saved and whether it remains valid.
3. Keep the state private and maintain a fresh profile
Do not commit an authentication or consent-state file to source control or publish it as a build artifact. Playwright warns that a browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or a test account. Store it in a suitably protected location and restrict access.

Keep a separate fresh context or state file for first-visit checks. That lets you test whether the consent banner still appears and whether its controls work, while the recurring capture uses the consented profile.

When the only requirement is a clean image, Playwright’s screenshot API accepts a stylesheet through the style option. Use a selector inspected on the target site, not a guessed universal selector:

The screenshot stylesheet applies to the capture; it does not persist a consent decision or change the site’s underlying consent state. Playwright documents that screenshot styles can pierce Shadow DOM and apply to inner frames, which can help when the known element is nested there: Page API documentation.
Make scheduled screenshots comparable
Removing the banner is only one part of visual stability. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Keep the capture environment aligned with the environment used for the baseline if you rely on pixel comparisons. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
- Use the same browser and browser version for the scheduled run and its comparison baseline.
- Keep the runner’s operating system and relevant browser settings consistent.
- Use a separate fresh-state run to detect changes to the first-visit consent experience.
Troubleshoot a banner that still appears
- Verify the scheduled context. Confirm the job loads the intended state file when it creates the browser context; a fresh context will not inherit another run’s state.
- Inspect the site’s actual storage. If the banner remains, check the site and CMP configuration after making a choice. Do not assume a cookie name or local-storage key works across sites.
- Check the banner’s location. If capture CSS has no effect, inspect whether the banner is inside an iframe or Shadow DOM. Playwright’s screenshot styling supports inner frames and Shadow DOM, but the selector still needs to identify the right element.
- Separate banner issues from visual noise. If comparisons remain inconsistent after the banner is handled, hold the browser and machine environment steady; rendering differences may come from the runner rather than the page.
- Retest first-visit behavior. Keep a fresh-state context or profile so recurring captures do not conceal a broken or changed consent interface.

Consent and legal context
Whether hiding a banner is appropriate depends on the purpose of the capture. If consent is the legal basis for personal-data processing, the European Data Protection Board says consent must be freely given, informed, specific, and unambiguous, and people must be able to withdraw it. A hidden banner is not evidence of consent. The EDPB’s small-business guide to processing personal data lawfully explains those consent principles. Its FAQ also explains that storing or accessing cookies on a user’s terminal equipment requires adequate information and consent; cookie rules also involve the ePrivacy Directive.
