To reduce the risk of burn-in on an LG OLED TV, avoid leaving bright, fixed images on screen for long periods, use the TV’s screen saver and panel-protection features where available, and leave the TV connected to power when it is off so automatic panel care can run. Pixel Cleaning is maintenance—not a guaranteed repair for permanent burn-in.
What causes OLED burn-in?
Burn-in is persistent image retention: a mark remains visible over other content. Faint image retention may be temporary and fade. LG identifies prolonged static images—such as channel logos, paused games, device menus—and high brightness or extended Vivid-mode use as risk factors. Its B3-series manual also flags fixed channel numbers, console icons, repeatedly displayed images, and some content with black bars. LG says current technology cannot completely prevent image retention; the B3 manual’s guidance is specific to that series, not a universal description of every model’s settings. LG’s burn-in guidance and the B3-series manual explain the distinction and risks.
How to reduce the risk
Vary content and avoid static screens
Change channels and content rather than leaving the same logo, game HUD, paused frame, or device setup menu on screen for a long stretch. Turn off setup screens when you are finished with them. A static image is not an automatic cause of burn-in, but repeated, prolonged exposure can contribute to uneven panel wear.
Let the screen saver and panel protections work
Keep the screen saver, Screen Shift, and Logo Luminance Adjustment enabled if your model offers them. LG says its screen saver activates after about two minutes of inactivity on a no-signal screen or paused video; some built-in apps may use a shorter interval. Screen Shift moves the image slightly at intervals, while Logo Luminance Adjustment detects static logos and lowers their brightness. LG’s current U.S. support guidance says the “High” setting reduces logo brightness the most. Names and availability vary by model and software version. Choose a suitable brightness for long viewing sessions
If you expect to display fixed content for a prolonged period, consider lowering OLED Pixel Brightness to a comfortable level. LG’s B3-series manual also recommends Eco picture mode for prolonged viewing. These are optional picture adjustments, not a requirement to watch at an uncomfortably dim setting; consult the manual for your exact model before changing settings.
How automatic Pixel Cleaning works
LG describes automatic panel maintenance as running after cumulative viewing time and, for a longer refresher, after an extended usage threshold. Its U.S. support article gives intervals of every four hours of cumulative use for one maintenance operation and 2,000 hours for a longer Pixel Refresher cycle. The B3-series manual describes the TV calculating timing from accumulated use and running cleaning after shutdown. Timing and behavior differ across models and generations, so treat these figures as LG’s stated guidance for the support article, not a guarantee for every LG OLED.

Leave the TV connected to mains power when it is off so it can perform maintenance. Avoid turning the TV on during a long refresher: LG says the longer calibration takes more than an hour and stops if the TV is switched on while it is running.
Should you run Pixel Cleaning manually?
LG’s support page provides a manual Pixel Refresher option when you notice image retention, but ordinary care guidance emphasizes the automatic schedule. Do not run repeated manual cycles as routine prevention. A completed compensation cycle may help clarify whether a mark was temporary retention, but it cannot be relied on to reverse permanent panel wear. RTINGS has reported that compensation cycles changed the measured appearance of marks in its accelerated testing, which is another reason not to equate every visible mark with permanent burn-in. LG’s instructions for Pixel Refresher are the right reference for your model.

When to contact LG support
If a mark remains visible over varied content and after normal automatic maintenance, contact LG support and check the warranty terms for your exact model and region. A brief ghost image that fades is different from a persistent mark, and the appearance alone does not establish whether a panel needs repair.

RTINGS’ ongoing accelerated longevity test covers 100 TVs, with one unit per model. Its OLED setup uses the same CNN feed at maximum brightness with OLED panel-saving features enabled, under unusually long schedules. In a 10-month update, RTINGS reported image retention across almost all OLEDs in that particular test, including permanent burn-in especially in older models; some observed marks were temporary. It reported roughly 6,000 hours of test runtime at that update and said measurements improved after short compensation cycles were forced. RTINGS cautions that its single-unit-per-model results show wider trends, not the reliability of a particular model or brand. These conditions are not a direct forecast of normal household use or an individual owner’s risk. RTINGS’ test methodology and 10-month update provide the test context.
