To prevent buffering in a 24/7 YouTube worship stream, first identify where the problem occurs: OBS network dropped frames point to the church’s connection to YouTube, while buffering reported by viewers can come from their own devices or internet connections. Choose a stream bitrate your connection can sustain continuously, test the complete service setup, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Lowering bitrate or output quality can improve reliability or reach, but reduces image detail or frame rate.

First determine whether the broadcaster or viewers are buffering

Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status when the stream stalls. Rising network dropped frames or disconnections indicate trouble sending the stream to YouTube’s ingest server, or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Distinguish network drops from encoding or rendering problems before changing settings. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains these symptoms.

If OBS reports a stable connection and only some viewers report buffering, the issue may be their location, device, or internet connection. Ask affected viewers what device and network they use, and compare reports from more than one connection. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, which helps viewers on different networks, but it does not fix an unstable encoder-to-ingest connection or ensure every source bitrate will suit every viewer. See OBS’s stream buffering guidance.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Do not choose a profile just because a speed test briefly reports enough upload capacity. Measure upload performance, then select a bitrate that fits stable capacity with room for other network traffic and fluctuations. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a useful starting point, not a guarantee; use sustained tests and stream statistics to adjust.

YouTube’s encoder figures are ingest recommendations, not proof that a particular church connection can reliably deliver them. Its current guidance lists H.264 at a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps. Other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different ranges. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before selecting a profile.

When drops persist, lower the video bitrate in OBS Output settings and test again. If necessary, step down resolution or frame rate as well. A less demanding profile can make the stream more reliable and easier for viewers with limited connections to watch, at the cost of image detail or smoothness. Compare candidate profiles using their resolution and frame rate, required bitrate and available headroom, OBS network drops, YouTube stream health, and viewer playback reports.

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

Check the encoder and transport settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, or AV1 encoding, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Set your encoder to match the profile you have tested and can sustain; platform recommendations do not override the limits of your connection.

For a church service, verify the complete profile in OBS and YouTube rather than changing settings at random. If you change bitrate, resolution, frame rate, encoder, or keyframe interval, repeat a representative test and check stream health before relying on the new configuration.

Work through connection problems in order

  1. Confirm the symptom. Check OBS dropped frames and connection status. Determine whether the problem is network-related or instead involves encoding or rendering.
  2. Test sustained upload and reduce load. Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions, leave headroom for other traffic, and lower the video bitrate if network drops continue. A single speed-test result does not establish continuous stability.
  3. Use a wired connection where possible. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Check the Ethernet cable if one is in use, along with the network adapter, router, and modem. Replacing a cable is relevant if the current setup needs a wired connection or the existing cable may be faulty.
  4. Look for software and network interference. OBS lists VPNs, security software or firewalls, network-prioritization or optimization tools, and outdated network drivers as possible causes. Review its troubleshooting steps for supported Windows network optimizations and TCP pacing. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce frame drops by lowering bitrate, but it is a fallback, not a root-cause repair, and may reduce picture quality.
  5. Rehearse the real service. YouTube recommends testing before the event with audio and video movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Rehearse the full church workflow—including cameras, scenes, motion, audio, graphics, switching, and the same internet path—and monitor during service.
  6. Check the viewer side if the sender is stable. Compare playback reports across devices and networks. If the stream is stable at the broadcaster but some viewers still buffer, consider lowering bitrate or output quality to broaden access, and check that YouTube’s available output options are behaving as expected.
  7. Contact the ISP if connection issues persist. Congestion or route changes may be outside the church’s control. OBS recommends escalating to the internet provider when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the connection problem.

Plan for continuous operation, not a one-time test

A 24/7 channel needs monitoring under the conditions in which it actually runs. Retest after configuration or network changes, and observe performance over time rather than treating one speed test or successful rehearsal as proof of continuous reliability. No universally correct bitrate or uptime guarantee follows from the encoder recommendations: the cause of a specific outage requires the stream statistics, logs, network measurements, and viewer-side details.
