To prevent black bars, first find out whether they are part of the cartoon file or are being added by your OBS scene or output framing. Set the OBS canvas and streamed output to the shape you want—commonly 16:9—then size and position the cartoon accordingly. If its shape differs, preserve the whole image with a designed background, or enlarge it and accept some cropping. Avoid stretching unless distorted artwork is acceptable. Finally, check the actual YouTube Live player: bitrate changes will not remove black margins already in the image.
Find where the black bars enter the stream
Check a representative frame from the original cartoon before changing OBS. If black margins are visible in the file itself, they are part of the source image; changing the scene or encoder bitrate alone will not remove them. You will need to crop or recompose the source, or adjust it within OBS.
If the file fills its own frame but appears surrounded by bars in the stream, inspect the OBS canvas, output resolution, and the source’s size and position in the scene. A mismatch between the cartoon’s aspect ratio and the canvas is a common cause.
Correct the framing in OBS
- Choose the intended frame shape. In OBS, open Settings > Video and check the Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution. Set both to resolutions with the aspect ratio you want. OBS gives 1920×1080 and 1280×720 as examples of 16:9 production resolutions; its guide recommends producing at 16:9 for best results (OBS Aspect Ratio Guide).
- Inspect the source in the scene preview. Select the cartoon source and check its bounds against the canvas. Resize and position it so the intended image area occupies the frame. If the source file has black margins baked in, crop those margins from the source or use OBS cropping before deciding how to scale it.
- Choose how to handle any remaining space. Use one of the framing approaches below. OBS also documents a Scaling/Aspect Ratio Filter for setting a source’s resolution or aspect ratio; use it only when it suits the composition you want.
- Test the encoded stream. Run a test with movement and audio representative of the planned broadcast, then inspect the YouTube Live player as well as the OBS preview. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health (YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions). The preview alone cannot confirm that the final player displays the frame as intended.
Choose a framing approach

Fitting the whole cartoon and adding a designed background is usually the safest choice when edge details matter. Enlarging is appropriate when filling the screen matters more than retaining every edge. OBS cautions that stretching mismatched content can warp or distort it; enlarging can instead move parts of the image beyond the preview or canvas (OBS Aspect Ratio Guide).

Check the actual YouTube Live output
After adjusting the scene, verify the stream in YouTube’s player. Look at the opening frame and at representative moving scenes: characters or scenery near the edges can reveal cropping that a static preview does not make obvious. Check that the artwork remains undistorted and that any unused space is covered as intended.
Keep composition separate from encoder quality settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers settings such as resolution and stream-health monitoring, but changing bitrate is not a fix for black borders embedded in the source image or introduced by scene framing. The official guidance is general live-stream advice; it does not establish a special aspect ratio or black-bar rule for 24/7 broadcasts.

Troubleshoot persistent black bars
- Bars appear in the source file: Crop or recompose the source, or crop it in the OBS scene. Confirm that cropping does not remove important artwork.
- The cartoon is smaller than the canvas: Check its bounds and position in the OBS preview. Scale it to fit, or use a background or overlay to cover the unused area.
- Bars remain after changing the canvas: Recheck both Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution, then inspect the source frame and its scene bounds. The source may have a different shape or embedded margins.
- Characters look stretched: Restore the source’s proportions and use a background or crop-based fill instead. Stretching mismatched content can distort the art.
- The OBS preview looks right but YouTube does not: Test the encoded output and inspect the actual YouTube player. Monitor YouTube stream health separately from scene composition.
- Changing bitrate has no effect on the bars: Return to the source image and scene framing. Bitrate does not remove margins that are part of the image.
