There is no single setting that prevents every freeze. Find where the picture stops updating—at the video source, in OBS, on the connection to YouTube, or only for a viewer—then fix that layer and test the full setup before leaving it live. A stream can buffer for viewers even when OBS reports no dropped frames, so first identify which symptom you have.

Find where the picture stops moving

Compare the image at each stage: the media or capture source, OBS’s preview, YouTube Live Control Room, and the viewer’s playback. The first stage that is already frozen is the best place to investigate. Changing internet bitrate will not repair a video source that has stopped playing.

  1. Check the source and OBS preview. Confirm the video or capture source is advancing and that the OBS preview shows motion. If either is static, inspect source playback and the scene or encoder configuration before changing network settings.
  2. Check OBS status. Look at the dropped-frame counter and encoder or rendering status while the problem occurs. Dropped frames point toward a connection to the ingest server that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; encoder or rendering trouble should be investigated on that path rather than treated as a viewer buffering issue.
  3. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect its preview, stream health, and messages to see whether YouTube is receiving an updating image and audio. Compare that with what viewers see.
  4. Compare more than one viewer. If the Control Room and OBS look healthy but one viewer reports a stuck picture or buffering, ask whether it happens on another device or connection. A single viewer’s playback problem does not establish that the broadcast source is frozen.

YouTube recommends a representative test before the event and monitoring stream health and messages while live. Use audio and movement similar to what the 24/7 broadcast will contain, rather than testing only a static screen. YouTube also transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream guidance explains the platform-side checks.

Set YouTube encoder settings that fit the stream

For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; supports up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Match bitrate to the row for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a value from a different format.

Example format Codec YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p, 30 fps AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps H.264 14 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps H.264 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended rates for the specified formats, not minimums. The full table on YouTube’s encoder settings page includes other resolutions and separate minimum rates. The recommendations reduce avoidable configuration problems; they cannot prevent a frozen source, software fault, power loss, or upstream outage.

In OBS, choose a rate your connection can sustain continuously, then confirm its codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval agree with YouTube’s current guidance. Do not raise bitrate simply to chase a freeze: excess bitrate can make an already unstable connection worse.

Fix dropped frames and intermittent disconnects

OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its general connection troubleshooting guidance suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed, but this is a rough troubleshooting starting point—not a YouTube rule. You still need to meet YouTube’s recommendations for the selected codec and video format, and your connection must have capacity for sustained streaming.

  • Reduce bitrate to a sustainable level. If OBS drops frames or disconnects, lower the configured bitrate and monitor whether the counter improves. If the needed format cannot be sustained reliably, reduce output resolution or frame rate and use the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation.
  • Try wired Ethernet. If streaming over Wi-Fi, test with a wired connection. Check suspect cables and the router or modem as well; OBS lists network hardware and cables among possible causes.
  • Check network software and drivers. Investigate outdated network drivers, VPN or security software, and network-optimization tools that could interfere. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the counter or connection improves.
  • Escalate persistent connection faults. If the issue continues across sensible bitrate settings and a wired setup, contact your ISP or a qualified streaming technician. OBS’s troubleshooting guide covers these connection checks: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues.

If OBS has no dropped frames but viewers see buffering

OBS notes that viewers use different devices and internet connections, so some may buffer even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames. Ask whether the problem affects multiple viewers, devices, and networks. If it is viewer-side, lowering bitrate or output quality may improve reach, but it changes the broadcast’s quality and should remain compatible with YouTube’s recommendations. This symptom alone does not prove the video source is frozen. See OBS’s streaming-issues guide.

Keep platform-specific fixes separate

Do not apply another service’s settings as if they were YouTube rules. Cloudflare Stream’s freezing guide uses its own keyframe-interval and upload-to-duration guidance; YouTube’s reviewed recommendations are a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds. Use the settings for the platform receiving your stream: Cloudflare Stream’s freezing troubleshooting guide.

Likewise, a GPU or encoder change is not a universal first fix. NVIDIA’s NVENC guidance discusses GPU utilization and encoder options, but investigate whether encoder or rendering overload is actually present before changing hardware or switching encoders: NVIDIA’s broadcasting guide.

Before leaving a 24/7 stream running

  • Run a realistic test using the same source, motion, audio, encoder settings, and network path planned for the long run.
  • Confirm the source and OBS preview continue moving, and check OBS’s dropped-frame and encoder status.
  • Confirm YouTube Live Control Room receives moving video and audio, and review its stream health and messages.
  • Observe the setup long enough to expose intermittent issues before relying on it for a long broadcast. During the event, continue monitoring; these checks are not a guarantee against every source, software, power, network, or platform failure.
