In OBS, turn on Loop for one file, or use a VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist for multiple files. Turn on Shuffle Playlist if you want the clips in randomized order.
Choose the right OBS source for your ambience videos

These are playback controls, not uptime guarantees: they determine what plays while OBS is running. OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support; it does not specify a software version in the cited material. OBS Media Sources documentation.
Set one ambience video to repeat in OBS
- Open OBS and choose the scene that feeds your YouTube livestream.
- In the Sources panel, click + and select Media Source.
- Create a new source or select an existing one, then choose the local ambience video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties and confirm the changes.
- Check the OBS preview to make sure the video is visible and playing. The file should restart when it reaches its end.
Use this approach when one long ambience video is all you want on screen. The loop is controlled by OBS’s Media Source, so it continues to repeat as part of the outgoing scene while OBS is operating.
Rotate several videos instead of repeating one
- Install VLC in a build compatible with OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the scene for the livestream. In Sources, click + and choose VLC Video Source.
- Add the local ambience files to the source’s playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning of the playlist after the last file.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist if you prefer randomized file order rather than the listed sequence.
- Confirm the source and check the preview to verify that the playlist is playing.
Shuffle changes the ordering; OBS’s documentation does not promise that it prevents every adjacent repeat. If a strict no-repeat sequence matters, organize the playlist deliberately and do not treat shuffle as a guaranteed no-repeat feature. See the OBS source documentation for the source controls.

Why YouTube’s Loop button does not fix a live feed
YouTube’s Loop player control repeats playback for a viewer watching a video or playlist. It does not change the media being sent by OBS to a live broadcast. The livestream’s visuals come from the encoder input, so set looping or playlist behavior in OBS. For YouTube’s player controls, see YouTube’s video and playlist playback help.
Looping is not the same as 24/7 uptime
A loop keeps media playing only while the software, computer, and network continue to operate. It does not, by itself, recover from a power loss, a computer crash, an internet outage, or a dropped YouTube connection. The OBS source documentation describes media playback behavior, while YouTube’s encoder guidance covers connecting a feed; neither cited page establishes that a local setup will remain online through those failures.

YouTube describes the stream key as the credential/address an encoder uses to send a feed and compares it to a stream password. Keep it private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder that uses it. Consult YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot a clip that still will not rotate or repeat
- The single video stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and make sure Loop is enabled.
- The playlist stops after its last item: Check that the source is a VLC Video Source and that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The VLC source is unavailable or does not work: Install VLC, and make sure its architecture matches OBS. The OBS documentation specifically notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The clips play in the same order every time: Enable Shuffle Playlist if randomized ordering is what you want; it is not a strict no-repeat guarantee.
- Viewers still see a single repeated video: Confirm that the playlist source is in the scene being sent to YouTube and that the encoder is streaming that scene, rather than relying on the viewer-side YouTube Loop control.
- The stream ends after a computer or internet problem: The loop setting cannot repair a local power, software, network, or connection failure. Restore OBS and the connection, then check the stream in YouTube Studio.
