To prevent a 24/7 rain loop from showing a black screen on YouTube, test the loop before going live, check whether the encoder preview and local recording also turn black, then use YouTube’s Live Control Room health messages to separate a local playback or encoding problem from an upload or copyright issue. There is no single rain-loop setting that guarantees a fix: the cause may be anywhere from the source video to YouTube’s ingest or enforcement systems.
Start by locating where the picture goes black
Compare three views: the loop in its playback application, the encoder’s preview and local recording, and the stream preview or output in YouTube Live Control Room. This establishes whether the fault occurs before the feed leaves your computer or later in the delivery path.
- Black in the player, encoder preview, or local recording: investigate the video file, playback application, source routing, encoder errors, and computer load.
- Clean in the encoder preview and local recording, but black in YouTube or for viewers: inspect Live Control Room stream health and the outbound internet connection.
- A YouTube copyright warning or placeholder appears: treat it as an enforcement issue, not a routine playback fault.
The exact cause depends on your playback and encoder software, operating system, media, logs, and where the image first fails.
Test the loop before making it a 24/7 broadcast
- Play the actual source. Run the rain video in the application and configuration you plan to use. A still rain scene can look normal in a single frame even when playback has frozen, so verify that the source advances over time.
- Start a test stream. Use movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast. Before starting the event, check the preview in Live Control Room; YouTube’s Live streaming tips say, “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.”
- Check the local recording. If your encoder is configured to record locally, verify that the recording starts and grows, then inspect it for a black or frozen picture. YouTube recommends checking that the local archive is being written.
- Monitor the test over time. Confirm the loop continues, rather than judging it from the opening frame. Watch the stream health indicator and note any encoder or format warnings.
- Test interruption recovery. If your setup has a backup encoder or recovery process, verify that it takes over after an interruption. YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking whether the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
If the encoder preview or recording is black
Check the source and playback
- Confirm the correct rain video is selected and that playback is advancing, not paused or stuck on a single frame.
- Check that the playback application’s output is routed to the encoder source you intend to stream.
- Try playing the source again and observe whether the problem appears before the encoder receives it.
Check encoder health and computer load
Look for encoder errors and check whether the computer is under heavy load. YouTube advises updating encoder software and using the local picture to determine whether the source routed into the encoder may be at fault. If the preview and local recording are already bad, troubleshoot this local signal chain before changing network settings.

Check format warnings
YouTube’s live-stream error guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as the expected format pair for proper ingestion. Read the Live Control Room health messages and resolve any format or container error they report; do not assume a black picture by itself identifies which setting is wrong.
If the local picture is clean but YouTube’s stream is not
Read Live Control Room health messages
Compare the encoder preview with the stream delivered to YouTube and check the Live Control Room health indicator. A clean local signal with a failing delivered stream points toward the outbound connection or the ingest path, rather than the rain video itself.

Test the outbound connection
Check upload and outbound internet strength using YouTube’s recommended connection checks. If the test indicates a connection problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful diagnostic or setup choice, but it is not a guaranteed cure for every black screen.
Verify the stream destination and key
The stream URL tells the encoder where to send the feed, and the stream key is the credential YouTube uses to accept it. Make sure both correspond to the current stream configuration, especially if you changed or reset the key. Avoid sharing the key: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

Check whether copyright enforcement replaced or interrupted the feed
A black or placeholder-like image can be different from a source or connection failure. YouTube says that a detected match to third-party content can cause a placeholder image to replace the stream, and unresolved content may interrupt or terminate a broadcast. YouTube Help states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.”
- Check YouTube Studio and Live Control Room for copyright warnings or strikes.
- Confirm you have the rights needed to livestream both the rain video and any accompanying audio. A recording being available online does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
- If YouTube reports a match, follow the notice’s instructions and resolve the content issue rather than repeatedly restarting the encoder.

Do not mistake the archive limit for a black-screen cutoff
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving note, not evidence that an active stream turns black at 12 hours. For a 24/7 broadcast, treat continuous playback and retaining a complete recording as separate needs; keep your own recording if you need a complete record across long runtimes, and verify that the source continues sending video.
