To prevent clipping, set gain conservatively at the microphone or source, check peaks through your interface and OBS, and place OBS’s Limiter last in the relevant filter chain as a final safeguard. Test with the actual whispers, breaths, taps, brushes, and other sounds you stream; a limiter cannot repair distortion that happened earlier in the audio path.

What clipping is—and why the audio path matters

Digital audio has a ceiling: 0 dBFS is the maximum. When the signal tries to exceed it, the result can sound harsh or distorted. OBS’s technical guide gives -9 dBFS as a “Permitted Maximum Level” reference, a conservative headroom reference for meter readings—not a required ASMR loudness target or YouTube rule. OBS explains the digital ceiling and meter guidance here.

Follow the entire path: microphone or playback source → preamp, interface, or mixer → OBS source filters and fader → OBS output → YouTube. Find and correct overload as early as possible. If the microphone preamp or another device clips, lowering the OBS fader or adding a limiter later will not restore clean audio.

Set gain using the sounds you actually stream

  1. Start at the source. Check the microphone’s physical gain control and any preamp, interface, or mixer controls. Begin with enough margin that louder moments do not overload the device.
  2. Test representative ASMR material. Include the loudest whispers, close-mic breaths, tapping, brushing, crinkles, and other triggers in your usual program. Do not set gain from silence or a single quiet sound.
  3. Watch peaks, not only average level. Speak or play at normal distance and intensity, then include the loudest realistic transients. Keep routine peaks below 0 dBFS with room for unexpected sounds and combined sources.
  4. Listen at each stage. Monitor at the source or interface if available, then listen to the signal in OBS. If it is already distorted upstream, reduce gain there before moving on.

OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends checking audio at the source and again in OBS. Closed-back monitoring headphones can help you hear the signal while reducing sound leaking back into a microphone; they are a monitoring aid, not a clipping fix.

Put OBS’s Limiter last in the filter chain

  1. In OBS, open the audio source’s Filters and add the Limiter to the source or bus you need to protect.
  2. Move the Limiter to the bottom of that source’s filter chain. OBS explicitly recommends using it as the last filter: Limiter Filter documentation.
  3. OBS documents default values of a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release. Treat these as starting values, not proven ideal settings for every ASMR setup. Listen to the result and adjust if you hear pumping, dulled transients, or other artifacts.
  4. Keep the source gain and mix under control rather than making the limiter work constantly. The limiter is there to catch peaks that reach it cleanly, not to conceal a distorted input.

The Audio Engineering Society cautions that limiting beyond about 1 dB can produce audible artifacts in internet audio distribution and recommends using your ears as the final judge. This is general distribution guidance, not a YouTube Live ASMR requirement. AES Technical Document TD1008, version 3.13.

Record and test the actual YouTube stream

  1. Record a representative session in OBS. Use your normal microphone, scene, filters, and program material. Listen back before going live; OBS recommends recording as usual and checking the file.
  2. Exercise the planned ingest setup. Test with the same audio and stream configuration you intend to use. YouTube advises including audio and movement similar to the actual stream in tests.
  3. Watch YouTube stream health and messages. Audio level control and encoder compatibility are different checks. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and constant-bitrate encoding; these settings do not fix clipped input. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
  4. Check again after changes. Re-test after changing a source, gain control, scene, filter, interface, or software setting. During a long-running stream, periodically observe the live output; no official source specifies a universal check interval or promises uninterrupted operation.

Common clipping problems and fixes

What you notice Likely cause What to do
Harsh or crunchy sound even when OBS’s meter is low Distortion may have been introduced at the microphone, preamp, interface, or another upstream stage. Reduce gain at the stage where distortion begins, then monitor the signal again through OBS.
Peaks hit 0 dBFS in OBS The incoming level or combined mix is reaching the digital ceiling. Lower source gain or the relevant mix level, preserve headroom, and test loud transients again.
Audio sounds flattened, pumps, or loses transient detail The limiter may be working too hard or its settings may not suit the material. Reduce upstream level so fewer peaks reach the limiter; adjust its settings while listening to a new recording.
OBS meters look safe, but the stream sounds wrong The recording or the YouTube ingest path may reveal a problem not apparent from the meter alone. Listen to an OBS recording and run a test using the planned stream configuration; check YouTube stream health and messages.
Audio codec or sample-rate settings seem related to clipping Encoder settings govern delivery compatibility, not source-level repair. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for supported delivery settings, while correcting clipping earlier in the signal path.

What YouTube does—and does not—fix

The cited YouTube live encoder guidance covers delivery settings and stream health, but it does not establish that YouTube normalizes every live stream or repairs clipped input. Do not rely on YouTube to fix distortion: prevent overload before encoding and judge the result from a recording and a test stream.
