To preserve quality when looping a video on YouTube Live, keep the source at its genuine resolution and frame rate, configure OBS’s live output for the source, and use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance. For a local setup, add the file as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. Use a stable upload connection, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; then test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before leaving it running.

What affects quality in a looped live stream?

Looping repeats playback; it does not by itself improve or degrade the file. The final picture depends on the source file, OBS’s output settings and encoding, the stability of the connection carrying the stream, and YouTube’s processing. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into playback formats for viewers, but transcoding cannot restore detail missing from the source or undo poor scaling.

Do not raise the output resolution or bitrate just because the controls allow it. Match resolution and frame rate to what the source can genuinely provide, and choose a bitrate appropriate to the selected ingest codec and YouTube’s live guidance. YouTube’s live recommendations are different from its file-upload encoding recommendations.

Set up a loop in OBS

  1. Check the file and rights. Play the recording from beginning to end, confirm its picture and sound are as intended, and make sure you have the necessary rights to its video and audio.
  2. Add the source. In OBS, add a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop. OBS describes this control as specifying whether the file plays again after playback has completed. The OBS documentation does not promise a seamless picture or sound transition at the boundary.
  3. For a playlist, use VLC Video. Add a VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, and ensure VLC is installed. These source options are documented by OBS Project.
  4. Check framing and sound. Inspect the OBS preview for cropping, scaling, unexpected blank space, and audio levels before sending the feed.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. Create or select a live stream in YouTube and enter the stream key and server URL in the encoder. The key tells YouTube where to accept the feed; treat it like a password and do not share it. See YouTube’s live stream settings.

Choose output settings that suit the source

For RTMP/RTMPS live ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs, with CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. It also specifies progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 for SDR, and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm that your encoder and chosen protocol support the settings you select. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP, and says resolution and frame rate are detected automatically by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings.

Use the live bitrate chart for your codec

The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest examples, not guarantees of perceived picture quality. YouTube publishes different recommended figures for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so check its current chart if using either codec.

H.264 live output YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are live-stream settings, not the values for exporting a file for upload. For example, YouTube’s H.264 SDR upload guidance gives 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rate and 12 Mbps at high frame rate, while its live recommendations in the table are 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps. A source file’s export bitrate therefore does not dictate the live encoder’s bitrate. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.

Allow for upload headroom

The connection must sustain the complete outgoing stream bitrate, including audio and any other output traffic. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom and says total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. Test upload capacity rather than relying on the connection’s advertised download speed; YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. If the local network link is unreliable, a wired connection may help its stability, but an Ethernet cable cannot increase the internet service’s available bandwidth. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test picture, sound, and playback before leaving it unattended

  1. Run a test using movement and audio similar to the actual video; a static or silent test may not reveal issues that appear during normal playback.
  2. Check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room for image quality, audio, and stream health while the encoder is sending.
  3. Open the stream on another device and check that the channel or watch page plays as expected, including on mobile.
  4. Monitor the stream rather than assuming a good initial preview means the connection will remain stable. A connection interruption can break the stream.

If viewers experience buffering, consider whether the selected latency is too low for the network conditions: YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. DVR can allow viewers to pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but it does not improve image fidelity. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings.

Troubleshoot common quality problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Soft or blocky picture The source lacks detail, output scaling is inappropriate, or the live bitrate is too low for the codec and resolution. Check the original file and OBS output resolution; then compare the selected codec and resolution with YouTube’s live bitrate guidance. A higher bitrate cannot restore detail absent from the source.
Buffering or stream interruptions Upload capacity or connection stability is insufficient for the complete outgoing bitrate. Test sustained upload, keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect stream health. Consider a wired local connection if Wi-Fi is unreliable.
Playback differs from the source dimensions or frame rate Output settings do not match the source, or automatic detection is in use. Check OBS output and the YouTube stream configuration. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate by default; manual selection is available using a custom stream key.
Audio or picture glitches at the loop boundary The transition at the end and start of the file may not be seamless. Preview the exact boundary in OBS. The Loop option repeats playback but does not guarantee a seamless visual or audio transition.
The live stream will not accept the encoder feed The stream key, server URL, or selected encoder settings may be wrong or incompatible. Verify the key and server URL in YouTube’s stream settings, confirm protocol and codec compatibility, and keep the key private.

Other useful checks

OBS is listed by YouTube as free, open-source software. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded streaming; that directory is not a current price comparison or endorsement. See the YouTube encoder directory.

Continuous playback does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules. Use content you have rights to stream, and review YouTube’s policies for the channel and material involved before leaving a stream running.
