To preserve subtitles for a YouTube 24/7 stream, first decide where viewers need them: selectable captions during the live broadcast, visible text burned into the picture, or selectable subtitles on the archived video. YouTube’s documented live-caption options are embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or supported caption software sending captions over HTTP POST; a regular subtitle track in a video file is not, by itself, a documented way to deliver captions to YouTube Live. Keep the subtitle file separately and test the exact encoding and caption workflow before relying on it for a long stream.
Choose the subtitle result you need
“Subtitles” can mean different things in a live-stream workflow. Identify the target before encoding; the right method depends on whether captions must appear during live playback or only on the archived video.
| What viewers need | What to do | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Selectable captions during the live stream | Deliver captions through YouTube’s documented live-caption workflow: embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 output from the encoder, or supported caption software sending captions over HTTP POST. | A sidecar subtitle file or ordinary in-container subtitle track is not, by itself, the documented live-caption path. YouTube’s embedded workflow currently supports one caption track. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements |
| Text visibly displayed on the video | Burn the text into the picture using a method supported by your video-encoding software. | The YouTube sources cited here do not specify a burn-in command or encoding application. Burned text is part of the image, not a selectable caption track. |
| Selectable subtitles on the uploaded or archived video | Retain the timed subtitle file and add it to the video in YouTube Studio. | Studio supports timed-file upload, transcript auto-sync, and manual caption entry. Verify the resulting language and synchronization. YouTube Help: Add subtitles & captions |
Keep subtitles safe when encoding
Do not assume that a video-only transcode or a playlist loop will preserve subtitle data. Handling varies with the source format, container, encoder, and workflow, and YouTube’s live-video transcoding guidance does not establish that an arbitrary source subtitle track will survive or become selectable.
- Keep the original subtitle file. Store an untouched copy with the matching video asset. This gives you a separate source for any later upload or caption workflow.
- Record the subtitle format and purpose. Note whether the source contains a sidecar file or an in-container track, and whether the intended result is burned-in text, live captions, or subtitles on the archive.
- Check the chosen encoder’s documentation. Confirm whether it supports the particular subtitle format and what its output will contain. The cited YouTube pages do not provide a format-by-format compatibility matrix for SRT, ASS, WebVTT, or other formats.
- Inspect and test the encoded output. Verify that the picture and any expected subtitle data are present. Then run a short YouTube test and check the live preview and captions before starting the 24/7 broadcast.
- Keep ingest and caption delivery separate in your checks. YouTube’s video codec, bitrate, resolution, and protocol recommendations address live video ingest; they are not a promise that a subtitle track is preserved.
Deliver selectable captions during YouTube Live
YouTube Help describes two live-caption routes: captions embedded in the video or captions sent through supported software over HTTP POST. For the embedded route, the documented caption format is EIA 608/CEA 708. YouTube says the encoder may read captions from a specific file format or encode them in real time; configure the actual encoder and caption source accordingly. The embedded workflow currently supports one caption track. See YouTube’s live-caption requirements.

- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, select the closed-caption option for Embedded 608/708 when using embedded captions.
- Configure the encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions, using its documented method for the caption source.
- Alternatively, use caption software supported by YouTube’s workflow to send captions over HTTP POST. Confirm the software, service, and encoder setup for your production rather than assuming any subtitle file or caption tool will work.
- Start a short test stream and check the live preview and caption display before relying on the setup for a long-running broadcast.
YouTube’s wording is explicit: “The captions can either be embedded in the video or sent through supported software that can send captions over HTTP POSTs.” This describes caption delivery to the live stream; it does not say a normal subtitle track carried in an encoded file will automatically be read as live captions.
Add subtitles to the archived video
If viewers should be able to select subtitles on the uploaded or archived video, manage that as a separate video-subtitle task in YouTube Studio. YouTube documents timed subtitle-file upload, auto-syncing a transcript, and manual caption entry. A timed file includes timing information; some formats also include positioning and style. Review the language and synchronization in Studio after adding it. YouTube’s add-subtitles instructions.

YouTube’s encoder setup says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive fact alone does not establish that a separate selectable subtitle track is retained. Check the resulting video and add subtitles in Studio if needed. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Live ingest settings are not subtitle-preservation settings
YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats. Its encoder guidance covers video ingest settings, but does not establish that an arbitrary source subtitle stream will survive that process. Treat caption delivery, video encoding, and subtitle management as separate parts of the production. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

If your encoder uses HLS, follow YouTube’s ingest requirements: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These requirements concern HLS ingest, not subtitle preservation. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.
Troubleshoot missing or unusable subtitles
- No captions during the live stream: Check that the Live Control Room closed-caption setting matches the chosen route. For embedded captions, confirm the encoder is sending EIA 608/CEA 708; for software delivery, confirm the supported HTTP POST caption workflow is configured.
- The source file had subtitles, but the live stream does not: A regular subtitle track is not the documented live-caption delivery method. Send captions through one of YouTube’s live routes instead of assuming a video transcode will convert or preserve that track.
- Captions are not selectable on the archive: Verify the archived video, then add the timed subtitle file in YouTube Studio. Automatic archiving of streams under 12 hours does not prove that a separate subtitle track was retained.
- Subtitles are out of sync or use the wrong language: Review timing and language in Studio, or check the caption source and synchronization in the live setup. Make the correction in the relevant workflow and test again.
- Only one live caption track is available in the embedded workflow: YouTube currently documents support for one track there. Do not rely on that route to provide multiple embedded language tracks.
- An HLS stream works but subtitles are missing: Meeting HLS segment and request requirements does not deliver captions by itself. Configure a supported live-caption route separately.
