One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a typical stereo podcast sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, set audio to AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 Kbps. Use CBR for the live stream, set a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), and rehearse with representative audio before going live. These are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations; they do not replace a clean source mix or repair recording problems.
Set the audio for a stereo RTMP or RTMPS stream
In your encoder’s live-stream settings, choose the following values for a conventional stereo podcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the secure connection; RTMP is also covered by its encoder guidance.
| Setting | Recommended value |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS where available; YouTube’s guidance also covers RTMP |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Channel layout | Stereo |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps |
| Rate control | CBR for the live stream |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds |
Encoder interfaces use different labels, so look for audio codec, sample rate, bitrate, and channel-layout controls in the stream or output settings. The CBR and keyframe recommendations apply to the live encoder configuration, not to podcast mix processing.
Preserve the quality of the source mix
Encoding settings govern what your encoder sends to YouTube; they cannot restore detail missing from the recording or correct a poorly routed mix. Start with the podcast audio you intend viewers to hear, route it into the encoder, and confirm the actual stream includes every voice and production element. YouTube’s cited live guidance does not specify podcast loudness targets, peak ceilings, EQ or compression settings, limiter configurations, or a preferred audio interface, so there is no basis here for prescribing numerical values for those choices.

An encoder can accept external audio hardware. An interface may be useful if your computer-based setup needs to connect an XLR microphone, but it is optional and does not by itself improve a recording or fix gain staging, room sound, or encoder settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the encoder workflow and external audio and video hardware.
Do not confuse live settings with upload settings
A prerecorded upload follows a different YouTube workflow. The live encoder page recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio, while YouTube’s upload guidance lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz and recommends 384 Kbps for stereo uploads. Do not copy the upload figures into a live-stream checklist as though they were YouTube’s live recommendations.

Choose RTMP/RTMPS or HLS based on the workflow
For a standard podcast stream without an HLS-specific requirement, use the protocol your encoder workflow supports rather than switching protocols in expectation of better audio. YouTube’s guidance does not claim that one protocol improves an otherwise identical podcast mix.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
| Consideration | RTMP/RTMPS | HLS |
|---|---|---|
| Audio codecs listed by YouTube | AAC or MP3 | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 |
| Stereo audio recommendations | 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps |
| Additional setup requirements | Follow the encoder’s RTMP/RTMPS workflow | Requires a transport-stream segment format and a rolling playlist, among other settings |
| Latency note | HLS has higher latency than RTMP, according to YouTube | Higher latency because HLS sends video in segments rather than continuously as RTMP does |
Use YouTube’s HLS setup guidance if your workflow calls for HLS. Its HLS-specific requirements mean it is not simply an audio-quality upgrade over RTMP/RTMPS.
Use 5.1 only when the show is actually mixed for it
A conventional podcast should generally be treated as stereo. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube says 5.1 is supported only with AAC. Its recommended figures differ by layout:

|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz | 128 Kbps |
| 5.1 surround | AAC only | 48 kHz | 384 Kbps |
Choose 5.1 only if the program is produced in that channel layout and the encoder and stream path support it. Do not apply the 5.1 figures to a stereo podcast.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rehearse and monitor the live stream
- Configure the encoder. Set the live audio codec, sample rate, bitrate, channel layout, CBR mode, and keyframe interval using the values above.
- Make a representative rehearsal. Include speech and production activity similar to the actual show, rather than checking only a silent or static scene. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check the received stream. Confirm the audio reaching YouTube is present and behaves as expected during the rehearsal.
- Monitor during the program. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while live so you can respond if the platform reports an issue.
YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That creates viewer-compatible outputs; it does not repair an imperfect source recording or mix. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance for its settings, testing, monitoring, and transcoding notes.
