Short answer: prepare your Tesla by confirming its model, trim, hardware, software version and regional eligibility; checking the package shown under Controls > Software; installing the required over-the-air update; subscribing to FSD (Supervised) if it is offered for your vehicle; reading the model-specific Owner’s Manual; and practicing attentive supervision and disengagement. Tesla’s current FSD (Supervised) is driver assistance, not autonomous driving. A private Tesla with FSD (Supervised) is not automatically an approved robotaxi: Tesla’s Robotaxi service is a separate, geographically limited service subject to safety-monitor arrangements and regulatory permissions.
What “ready for autonomous driving” means in a Tesla
Tesla uses several different labels for driving features, and the distinction matters. Autopilot or Tesla Assisted Driving Basic features provide limited assistance and require active driver supervision. FSD (Supervised) adds a wider set of assisted-driving maneuvers, but it still requires a fully attentive driver. Tesla states that “None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.”
Preparation therefore has three parts: establishing whether your particular car and location are eligible, bringing the vehicle’s software and sensing environment up to the required state, and learning how to supervise and take over. Robotaxi operation is a separate question. It depends on Tesla’s service deployment, local permits, designated operating areas and the safety controls Tesla applies there; buying or subscribing to FSD (Supervised) does not by itself enroll a privately owned car in that service.

Do not assume that two Teslas with the same badge have the same feature set. Tesla says availability can vary with vehicle configuration, installed hardware, software version, region, model, trim and model year. Start by recording the vehicle identification information shown in your Tesla account and the car’s software screen.

- Confirm the exact model and model year.
- Record the trim and any factory-installed driver-assistance package shown in your account or vehicle menus.
- Note the country or region in which the car is registered and normally driven.
- Check the Tesla account associated with the vehicle; eligibility and upgrade offers are tied to that vehicle and market.
Regional rules can change which functions are enabled, where they may be used and whether a subscription is offered. A feature visible in another country, on another model year or in an online video is not proof that it is available on your car.
2. Check the installed package and subscribe only if eligible
Find the package in the car
- Park safely and open the touchscreen.
- Choose Controls > Software.
- Look for the listed driver-assistance package, including wording such as Full Self-Driving Capability, and note the FSD software information displayed there.
The wording and screen layout can differ by model and model year. If the package is not listed, do not treat a hardware reference, an old invoice or a third-party description as confirmation that FSD (Supervised) is enabled.
Use Tesla’s supported subscription path
When Tesla offers FSD (Supervised) for the vehicle and region, you can start a subscription in either of these locations:

- Vehicle touchscreen: Controls > Upgrades.
Tesla’s support page listed the subscription at $99 USD per month when accessed on October 19, 2026. Tesla says price and availability can change, so treat that figure as a current listed price for the stated date, not a permanent rate or a worldwide price. A subscription changes software access; it does not remove the driver’s duty to monitor the road.
3. Install the required over-the-air update
Tesla says the vehicle must complete a software update before FSD (Supervised) features become available. A download that is still pending, an interrupted installation or a vehicle that has not restarted after the update can leave the feature unavailable even when the account shows eligibility.

- Review the pending update on the vehicle’s software screen.
- Park where the car can remain undisturbed for the installation and follow the on-screen timing instructions.
- Keep the vehicle connected to Wi-Fi when updates or current navigation maps are needed.
- After installation, return to Controls > Software and verify that the displayed software version has changed and that the expected driving package is available.
Do not plan a first FSD drive while an update is downloading or installing. If the update repeatedly fails, record the exact message, confirm a stable Wi-Fi connection and use Tesla service support rather than attempting an aftermarket software modification.
4. Read the instructions for your exact Tesla
Controls, warnings and available maneuvers differ across models and model years. Tesla places the current manual in the car at Controls > Service > Owner’s Manual. Read the sections covering Autopilot or Tesla Assisted Driving Basic, FSD (Supervised), driver monitoring, disengagement, Summon and any camera or sensor warnings before activating a feature.

Pay particular attention to warnings about roads, weather, visibility, construction zones, driver attention and situations in which the system may request an immediate takeover.
5. Prepare cameras, driver monitoring and maps
Keep the sensing environment usable
- Keep the driver’s forward view clear. Do not place objects, stickers or accessories where they obstruct the road view or the vehicle’s cameras.
- Keep the cabin camera’s view usable so the attention checks can operate. Avoid covering it or positioning yourself so it cannot observe you.
- Respond to any camera-calibration request and allow calibration to finish before relying on camera-dependent features.
- Keep the windshield and exterior camera areas clean using normal vehicle-care practices. Tesla’s instructions do not require a special aftermarket camera-cleaning device.
Check navigation data
Tesla’s Autopilot guidance says Navigate on Autosteer may require camera calibration and current navigation maps. Connect to Wi-Fi when the car needs map data, then verify that the route and destination shown on the screen match your intention. A route being displayed does not mean every road segment is suitable for every assisted-driving function.
6. Understand what FSD (Supervised) can and cannot do
When enabled and available for the road and conditions, FSD (Supervised) can assist with steering, lane changes, navigation-following, intersections and parking. These are assistance functions: the system can make an incorrect decision, fail to detect a hazard or behave differently from your expectation.

Tesla’s direct warning is unambiguous: “You are responsible for the speed and control of your vehicle at all times, whether FSD (Supervised) is enabled or not.” Tesla also describes FSD (Supervised) as “an advanced driver assistance system that is intended to be used only with a fully attentive driver.” Keep your attention on the roadway, remain ready to intervene immediately and never use the system as permission to sleep, read, use a phone or leave the driver’s seat.

Practice in a legal, low-traffic location while stationary and then at low speed, following the instructions for your model. Learn the normal disengagement methods before you need one:
- Press the brake pedal when that is the method specified for your vehicle.
- Use the gear control if your model’s instructions identify it as a disengagement input.
- Use the steering-wheel scroll wheel where equipped and specified by the manual.
- Apply manual steering when you need immediate control, then secure the vehicle safely.
After taking over, keep control until you have assessed the road and deliberately decide whether reactivation is safe and permitted. A warning, a takeover request, poor visibility, an unexpected road user or uncertainty about the route is a reason to disengage rather than test the system.
8. A cautious first-drive procedure
- Choose a suitable trip. Use a familiar route in daylight and reasonable weather. Avoid making the first activation during heavy traffic, complex construction or a time-critical journey.
- Set the destination manually. Confirm the route, lane guidance and final stopping point. Do not assume the suggested route reflects your preferred turn or drop-off location.
- Check your position. Sit normally, keep the cabin camera unobstructed and make sure you can reach the controls without looking away from traffic.
- Activate only when the screen and road conditions permit it. Follow the activation indication and any model-specific prompt in the Owner’s Manual.
- Monitor continuously. Watch traffic, cyclists, pedestrians, lane markings, signals, speed and the vehicle’s path. Keep both the mental capacity and physical position needed for an immediate takeover.
- Intervene early. Brake, steer or use the stated disengagement control at the first sign that the maneuver is unsafe or unclear.
- Review the experience while parked. Note where the system requested supervision or behaved unexpectedly, then consult the manual before trying a similar situation again.

Summon: useful for a driveway, not autonomous road travel
Tesla describes Dumb Summon and Actually Smart Summon as low-speed, private-property features intended for places such as driveways and private car parks. They require direct monitoring. Keep a clear line of sight, remain ready to stop the vehicle and use them only where the law and the vehicle’s instructions allow.
Tesla’s UK support page states that Actually Smart Summon is limited to approximately 6 metres from the vehicle and 20 metres of total travel. Those figures are operating limits stated for that support page and market; they are not a promise that every model, country or software version has identical behavior. Summon does not demonstrate that the car can drive unattended on public roads.

Why a private Tesla is not automatically a robotaxi
Robotaxi service has additional requirements that a privately owned vehicle does not meet simply by receiving an FSD update. Tesla’s corporate updates describe an Austin launch with a safety rider, followed by limited removal of the safety monitor under specified conditions, and planned expansion to additional metropolitan areas. The sequence and coverage are controlled by Tesla’s operating policies and local regulatory approvals.
Before treating a Tesla as a potential robotaxi, verify all of the following in the relevant location:
- The service is officially available in that city or operating zone.
- Your vehicle and account are accepted by Tesla’s service program, if private vehicles are eligible at all.
- The current safety-monitor, remote-assistance and passenger rules are satisfied.
- Local permits and insurance requirements allow the intended operation.
- Tesla’s current service terms specify who is responsible for the vehicle, passenger safety and incident response.
Do not advertise rides, remove supervision equipment or allow passengers to rely on a private FSD-equipped car as an unsupervised taxi unless Tesla and the relevant authorities explicitly authorize that arrangement.

The documented commercial path for expanding access is Tesla’s own FSD (Supervised) subscription, listed at $99 USD per month on Tesla’s support page accessed October 19, 2026, with Tesla warning that price and availability may change. The preparation instructions do not require a physical accessory, external camera or aftermarket device, and no such device can unlock Robotaxi service or convert supervised assistance into unsupervised autonomy.
Keep the vehicle’s software current, connect to Wi-Fi when updates or maps require it, maintain an unobstructed cabin-camera view and reread the manual after significant software changes. Treat every new release as a reason to check the current warnings rather than assuming that a familiar route will behave identically.

Troubleshooting when FSD is missing or unavailable
The package or subscription option does not appear
- Recheck Controls > Software and the Tesla app under Upgrades > Software Upgrades.
- Confirm the vehicle, model year, trim, region and account are the ones you intended to check.
- Allow for regional or regulatory restrictions; a feature can be unavailable even when the vehicle has compatible hardware.
- Do not infer eligibility from another Tesla or from a video recorded in a different market.
The vehicle says an update is required
- Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network.
- Keep the car parked and available for the complete installation.
- After the restart, verify the software version and package again.
- If installation fails repeatedly, preserve the error message and contact Tesla service.
The system requests attention or will not activate
- Remove anything blocking the driver’s view or cabin camera.
- Seat yourself so the camera can observe you and keep your attention on the road.
- Complete any requested camera calibration.
- Check that navigation maps are current when the selected feature requires them.
- If a warning persists, do not bypass it; use the Owner’s Manual and Tesla service guidance.
The car behaves unexpectedly during a drive
Take control immediately using the disengagement method for your model, slow or stop in a safe location, and record the road situation and warning shown on screen. Do not continue the same maneuver merely to see whether the system corrects itself. Review the relevant manual section and report persistent or safety-critical behavior to Tesla.
What Tesla’s published safety and fleet figures do—and do not—show
Tesla’s current FSD support page reports seven times fewer major and minor collisions and seven times fewer off-highway collisions in its own vehicle-safety comparison. Those are Tesla’s figures and should not be read as an independent, universal safety study or as a guarantee for a particular driver, route or software version.
Tesla Investor Relations reported in 2026 that its global fleet could collect the equivalent of more than 500 years of continuous driving data per day, and that customers drove more than 1 million kilometers in one month in South Korea using FSD (Supervised). These figures describe Tesla’s reported fleet data and customer distance; they do not change the supervision requirement for an individual trip.

Final pre-drive checklist
- Vehicle model, trim, model year and region are confirmed.
- The Tesla account and vehicle menus show the expected package or a clearly stated eligibility result.
- The required OTA update is fully installed.
- Navigation maps are current when required.
- Forward cameras and the cabin camera have an unobstructed view, and calibration is complete if requested.
- You have read Controls > Service > Owner’s Manual for this exact vehicle.
- You know how to disengage with the brake, gear control, scroll wheel or manual steering as applicable.
- You have chosen a suitable route and can remain fully attentive for its entire duration.
- You understand that FSD (Supervised) is not autonomous and that Robotaxi service is a separate, location-dependent program.
With those checks complete, your Tesla is prepared for the supervised features Tesla makes available to your vehicle and location. It is not thereby an autonomous car or an automatically approved robotaxi.
