Before a RuneScape launch, identify the character and game version you plan to use, make sure you can access its login email and recovery options, secure the account, and test your client or launcher sign-in. Because no specific release is named here, check that game’s official announcement for any extra requirements; do not assume a migration deadline, platform requirement, or progress reset.
1. Identify your character, game, and current login
First, establish which character you want to use and whether you mean RuneScape or Old School RuneScape (OSRS). Note whether you currently sign in with legacy RuneScape credentials or a Jagex account. If you have multiple characters, list the ones you want available before changing how you manage them.
A Jagex account is the credential and character-management system; the Jagex Launcher is software for accessing Jagex games. Jagex Support says an account can hold up to 50 characters. Check the current Jagex Accounts FAQ for the latest account and access details.
2. Make sure you can recover the account
Confirm that you can sign in to the email address associated with your account and that the email account itself is protected. Jagex recommends email two-step verification in its OSRS security guidance. Review the recovery route before launch rather than discovering a problem when you need access quickly.

If you are considering upgrading an existing character to a Jagex account, understand the credential change first: the old RuneScape login details are replaced by Jagex account credentials. Jagex says upgrading is currently optional—“For now, it’s entirely up to you whether you upgrade to a Jagex account or not.” Its FAQ also describes plans to make Jagex accounts mandatory in the future; that is not the same as a current requirement. Follow the live FAQ’s migration steps and ensure the login email is accessible before proceeding.
3. Review account security
Set up two-factor authentication and keep recovery options
Jagex account two-factor authentication is required by default through email codes. The account also supports a mobile authenticator app and backup codes. Store backup codes somewhere secure and accessible if you lose or replace your phone; do not rely on a single device as your only recovery path. Check Jagex’s current account security instructions for setup and recovery details.
For OSRS, check your Bank PIN and avoid phishing
OSRS players should review their Bank PIN and follow the advice on the official security page. Do not use unexpected login links sent by email or in-game message. Instead, navigate directly to the official RuneScape site and sign in from there.
4. Decide whether to use a Jagex account and which access route fits
Whether to upgrade depends on your current recovery readiness, how many characters you want to manage together, and the device and client you plan to use. The Launcher is separate from the account itself. Jagex’s FAQ lists Launcher access on Windows and macOS and says a Linux Launcher Beta is possible; availability and instructions can change, so check the FAQ for your platform.

The Launcher supports the official RuneScape and OSRS clients, as well as RuneLite. A character imported to a Jagex account can still be played through Steam, but Jagex says only one character can be linked per Steam account and recommends enabling Steam Guard. Verify those details in the Jagex Accounts FAQ before relying on a particular route.

In response to “Do I need a Jagex account to use the launcher?”: the account and Launcher are distinct, and the FAQ describes Launcher access for Jagex accounts. If you still use legacy credentials, check the current official instructions for your character and preferred access method rather than assuming that installing the Launcher upgrades or links the account automatically.

- Choose the intended game and device. Confirm whether you plan to play RuneScape or OSRS and whether you will use the official client, Launcher, RuneLite through the Launcher, mobile, or Steam.

6. Decide whether membership matters for your plans
For OSRS, an active subscription is not required to log in and play; membership provides access to additional content, according to the official returning-player page. The RuneScape returning-player page also covers membership and points players to a returning-player guide. Consider membership only if you want the content it unlocks; it is not a basic account-preparation requirement.
