El Niño can shift seasonal weather odds, but it cannot predict whether a particular home will flood. NOAA’s September 10, 2026 outlook said El Niño was strengthening and gave a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27; NOAA also cautioned that related impacts are more likely, not guaranteed. Check your local flood risk, alerts, and forecasts, then prepare for the hazards officials identify in your area.

What El Niño does—and does not—tell you

El Niño is a climate pattern that changes the odds of seasonal weather patterns. Its effects vary by region and by individual weather event. It is not a storm headed for a specific address, nor does it mean every location will experience flooding. NOAA puts it plainly: “No, El Niño isn’t a storm that will hit a specific area at a specific time.” You can read the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s ENSO Diagnostic Discussion and its El Niño and La Niña FAQ, but use local information—not the seasonal outlook alone—to decide what to do.

The September 10, 2026 diagnostic also described a 75% chance of an event exceeding prior El Niño strength dating to 1950 during October–December 2026. That is a specific seasonal probability, distinct from the broader greater-than-90% chance of a very strong event during fall and winter. Seasonal outlooks can change, so check NOAA’s current update alongside local forecasts and emergency instructions.

How do I check my home’s flood risk?

Look up mapped hazards, then check locally

Start with the FEMA Flood Map Service Center to see mapped flood hazards. A map is a starting point, not a guarantee that a property outside a mapped hazard area cannot flood. As Ready.gov warns, “Where it can rain it can flood.” Ask your local floodplain office or emergency-management agency about neighborhood-specific hazards, evacuation zones, and current guidance.

Sign up for alerts and observe how water moves

Enroll in your community’s emergency alerts and know how local officials issue evacuation instructions. Pay attention to drainage paths near your property: where rainwater collects, how it leaves the yard, and whether gutters, drains, or low areas are prone to blockage or ponding. Local authorities can help interpret risks that a broad seasonal outlook or map cannot resolve for your address.

Review insurance and secure household records

Check flood coverage well before a threat

Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Ready.gov says a flood insurance policy typically takes up to 30 days to take effect, so do not wait for a forecast or warning to ask about coverage. Contact your insurer early and check the policy’s effective date, building and contents coverage, exclusions, limits, deductible, and any property or community eligibility requirements. Use current policy documents for exact terms.

Make an inventory and protect important documents

Record your belongings with a written inventory and photos or video, and store copies somewhere you can access if the home is damaged. Keep essential paper records in a waterproof container and maintain password-protected digital copies as well. Include insurance details and important household records; secure access to digital copies so they remain useful if you have to leave quickly.

Make a household flood plan before water rises

  • Choose a destination and routes. Identify where everyone will go and more than one route to get there. Practice the plan and follow officials’ directions if routes or destinations change.
  • Agree how to communicate. Decide how household members will check in if they are separated, and make sure everyone knows whom to contact.
  • Plan for individual needs. Include pets, medications, mobility or accessibility needs, and anything else household members may need to evacuate safely.
  • Prepare essential supplies. Keep several days of essentials together, including batteries and chargers, so you can leave without searching for supplies.

Reduce avoidable damage to the property

Move belongings and address utilities

Move valuables and important items to a higher level before flooding threatens. Where feasible, have critical utilities elevated or otherwise protected in consultation with qualified local professionals. Clearing gutters and drains can reduce avoidable water buildup, but it cannot prevent flooding when water exceeds what the property’s drainage can handle.

Consider pumps, valves, and temporary barriers carefully

A check valve may help limit water backing up through plumbing, and a battery-backed sump pump can keep working during some power outages. Fit depends on the home’s drainage system, installation, power availability, battery runtime, and maintenance. A pump or barrier is not a substitute for evacuation or a guarantee against flood damage. Before choosing equipment, consider how water could reach the home, the volume involved, outage risks, installation needs, and whether the product suits the property.

Sandbags or other temporary barriers may be appropriate in some situations, but use them only when suitable for the water pathway and consistent with local direction. FEMA lists sandbags among potential flood-loss measures, not a way to make an unsafe property safe during a major flood. FEMA’s May 2018 flood loss-avoidance consumer guidance describes up to $1,000 in eligible expenses to protect insured property and up to $1,000 to move insured property, subject to eligibility conditions. Those older figures should not be treated as guaranteed current benefits; check current policy terms with your insurer.

What should I do when flooding threatens or begins?

  • Evacuate immediately when ordered. Do not delay to move belongings, deploy barriers, or operate equipment.
  • Stay out of floodwater. Do not walk, swim, or drive through it; water may conceal hazards or move with dangerous force.
  • Avoid electrical hazards. Keep away from wet electrical equipment and do not touch equipment that may be energized.
  • Use fuel-burning equipment outdoors. Run generators and similar equipment outside, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and other building openings.
  • If trapped indoors, move to the highest level. Do not enter a closed attic, where rising water could trap you.

Follow your local authorities’ instructions and FEMA’s Ready.gov flood guidance for current safety advice. Protecting property must never take priority over getting people to safety.

When is it safe to return and clean up?

Return only when officials say it is safe. Floodwater may be contaminated; check with your local health department before using tap water for drinking or food preparation. Document damage and contact your insurer. Wear protective gear during cleanup, and FEMA advises hiring a qualified flood adjuster before beginning cleanup or repairs.
