Prepare before a storm is close: monitor official alerts, secure outdoor items, choose a safe indoor shelter, and unplug sensitive electronics only while conditions are still safe. If thunder is audible or a warning tells you to shelter, go indoors and stay away from windows, cords, plumbing, and plugged-in equipment. A typical surge protector is not lightning-proof.

Prepare before a storm develops

Keep alerts available

Check your local forecast and official warning channels, and know which county or locality your alert system uses. A battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio can provide alerts; check its batteries so it is ready when power or internet access is interrupted. Keep your phone charged so you can receive alerts, too.

Choose where everyone will shelter

Identify sturdy buildings near places your household regularly visits, including home, work, and school. At home, decide in advance which secure interior location everyone should use if a severe thunderstorm warning calls for shelter. Plan how pets can join you if there is time.

Reduce hazards outdoors

  • Secure outdoor furniture and other loose items that strong winds could move.
  • Address trees that could fall on your home; FEMA advises trimming or removing trees that pose that risk.

FEMA’s thunderstorm preparedness guidance also suggests considering surge protection or a lightning protection system as advance property-protection measures.

Should you unplug electronics before a thunderstorm?

Yes, if you choose to unplug equipment, do it well before the storm threatens and only when it is safe to approach the devices. FEMA includes unplugging appliances and other electric devices among advance property-protection steps. But do not race to unplug them after thunder is audible or lightning is nearby: the National Weather Service warns that approaching electrical equipment during a thunderstorm can expose you to a conductive path.

A surge protector may help with some electrical surges, but it is not a guarantee against a direct lightning strike. The National Weather Service states that “Typical surge protectors will not protect equipment from a lightning strike.” Surge protection also does not make it safe to handle plugs or cords during a storm.

What to do when a warning arrives or you hear thunder

  1. Go indoors promptly. Move to your chosen secure location, away from windows and doors. Take pets if time allows. Severe thunderstorm warnings can involve damaging wind or large hail; the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg office defines a severe thunderstorm by hail at least 1 inch in diameter, winds of 58 mph or stronger, or a tornado.
  2. Avoid conductive paths. Do not touch electrical equipment or cords, plumbing, or corded phones. Do not shower, bathe, wash dishes, or handle plugged-in appliances while lightning is active. A cellular or cordless phone is a safer option, provided it is not connected to a charger or other electrical equipment.
  3. Do not go back outside to protect property. Do not retrieve belongings, move furniture, or unplug appliances once the storm is close. People come before devices.
  4. Wait after the storm. Stay sheltered for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder. The National Weather Service summarizes the lightning rule as “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”

After the storm

  • Watch for fallen trees and downed power lines. Report downed lines to the appropriate utility or local authority, and keep well away from them.
  • Avoid flooded roadways; do not drive or walk through floodwater.

These steps follow U.S. National Weather Service and FEMA guidance. Alert terminology and systems differ by location; outside the United States, use your local weather authority’s alerts and safety instructions.
