Keep the original file, organize a separate working copy, and include the exhibit in an indexed complaint file. A screenshot alone does not necessarily establish who published a page, whether it changed later, or that an offer applied to your purchase.
What to capture so the screenshot has context
Capture the exact webpage and enough surrounding information for another person to understand what it shows. This is practical evidence-handling guidance; the e-Jagriti filing guide does not prescribe a screenshot format.
- The page source: Keep the full URL visible or record it in a separate evidence log. Include the visible seller or website identity.
- The relevant representation: Show the offer, product description, price, terms, delivery promise, or other material detail relevant to the complaint.
- The time context: Record the date and time of capture, including the time zone if known. A screenshot’s timestamp does not by itself prove when the website first published the content.
- Readable surrounding material: Use a zoom level that makes key text legible. Do not crop away context that helps identify the page or changes the meaning of the representation.
If the relevant material spans several screens, take a sequence of screenshots with some overlap and label them in order. Do not stitch the originals into a composite that might be mistaken for a single unaltered capture. A PDF print or screen recording can provide extra context, but keep it as a supplement rather than a replacement for the screenshot files.
Preserve the original and keep a capture log
Save the original screenshot file without editing it. Where possible, retain its filename and file metadata. Make a separate copy for highlighting or redaction so the original remains available for comparison. If you redact private information in an exhibit, keep the unredacted original securely and identify the redaction in your index.

For each capture, make a short log entry containing:
- Exhibit identifier and original filename.
- Full URL and the visible seller or site name.
- Capture date and time, with time zone if available.
- Device and browser used.
- A concise description of what the screenshot is offered to show.
- Any work done to a separate copy, such as highlighting or redaction.
Capture a changing or short-lived page promptly. Preserve related records that independently connect the page to your transaction, such as an order confirmation, invoice, payment record, seller email or chat, complaint reference number, and a later version of the page if relevant. These records can help provide context; the screenshot itself shows what appeared on a screen at capture and may not establish authorship, later changes, or applicability to a specific purchase.

Organize screenshots in the complaint file
The e-Jagriti Help Document’s Consumer Complaint filing guide lists an index, a complaint proforma, a “Synopsis with List of Dates and Events,” a memo of parties, a consumer complaint with notarised affidavit, and “Add Annexures / Documents.” The guide provides a useful structure for organizing screenshots alongside related records; follow the current portal flow and any directions from the relevant Consumer Commission. e-Jagriti portal Consumer Complaint filing guide (PDF)
- Give each screenshot a consistent identifier, such as Annexure A-1 and A-2. Use matching labels in the file names where practical.
- List each item in the index with its identifier and a short description.
- In the date-wise synopsis, state the relevant event date and the fact the exhibit is offered to show. Distinguish the date of the transaction from the screenshot’s capture date.
- Place the screenshot and related corroborating records in the annexures/documents section, in an order that makes the sequence easy to follow.
Do not describe a screenshot as proving more than it depicts. For example, a page showing a price may document the displayed price at capture, while an order confirmation or invoice may be needed to show what was actually purchased or charged.

Electronic evidence and the certificate question
The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 has been in force since 1 July 2024. India Code identifies electronic and digital records as documents, and section 63 sets conditions for certain computer outputs and provides for a certificate when an electronic record is tendered under that section. That does not establish that every screenshot submitted in every Consumer Commission proceeding must invariably be accompanied by a section 63 certificate. The applicable procedure and admissibility issue can depend on the forum and the circumstances. Preserve the original electronic file and its context, check the Commission’s current directions, and seek case-specific legal advice if admissibility is disputed. Do not assume that every rule for ordinary court proceedings applies identically in every consumer-forum matter.

Where to take a consumer grievance in India
The Department of Consumer Affairs identifies the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) as a pre-litigation grievance channel. It lists 1915 and online and messaging routes; its stated operating hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., all seven days other than national holidays. Check the live service page for current contact details. The Department also describes approaching the appropriate Consumer Commission if a consumer remains dissatisfied. National Consumer Helpline
The Department’s Consumer Protection Act, 2019 summary says online filing is available at the Commission with jurisdiction over the consumer’s place of residence or work, irrespective of where the transaction took place. It also mentions virtual hearings and deemed admissibility where admissibility is not decided within 21 days. Treat this as a general summary, not a determination of jurisdiction or procedure for an individual complaint; check current filing requirements and the applicable Commission’s directions.
