You can prepare for a game’s hardest difficulty without starting over by treating the run as a controlled project: learn the mode’s reset rules, rehearse on a separate save, document a low-risk route, and verify that every backup can actually be restored. Do not assume that a cloud icon, an autosave, or a second difficulty setting protects you. Some highest-difficulty modes are new-game-only; others disable manual saves, cloud synchronization, or cross-progression.
Read the hardest-mode rules before you select it
The most expensive mistake is beginning a run before knowing what the game considers a failure. Open the difficulty description, accessibility menu, and save-management screen, then answer these questions in writing:
- Can the hardest setting be selected after the game has started, or only when creating a new game?
- Does death reload a checkpoint, restart a chapter, return you to a training milestone, or erase the entire run?
- Which upgrades, equipment, currency, map discoveries, or skill levels carry over?
- Are manual saves, quick-saves, autosaves, cloud synchronization, or cross-progression restricted?
- Can you pause, change controller settings, use aim or timing assists, or lower one mechanic without abandoning the run?
- Are rewards, trophies, achievements, leaderboards, or unlocks limited by changing the difficulty?
Write the answers in a notes file before committing. A short rules sheet prevents a long session from being lost because of one misunderstood sentence in a mode description.

Some games do not let an existing save become a hardest-mode save. God of War Ragnarök, for example, documents that its highest “God of War” mode can be selected only when starting a new game. If your title follows that model, practicing on an existing playthrough will teach you the mechanics but will not convert that save into the higher setting. Finish your preparation first, then create the serious run.

Full-reset and restricted-save modes
Assassin’s Creed Mirage documents a Full Synchronization mode in which death resets progress to the end of Assassin training. In that mode, cross-progression, cloud synchronization, and manual saves are unavailable, while quick-save and autosave remain available. That is a fundamentally different risk profile from a conventional “Very Hard” setting: an external copy or subscription cannot override a rule that the game intentionally enforces.
Compare modes before choosing one

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 recommends allowing players to change difficulty at any time without losing progress, but that is guidance for game design, not a guarantee that every title follows it. Treat the game’s own rules as authoritative.
Build a risk-free practice loop
Practice should reproduce the decisions that kill runs while keeping the real run untouched. Use an earlier difficulty or a separate save slot and repeat a short loop rather than replaying an entire campaign.

- Choose a safe practice state. Create a manual save before a boss, difficult traversal section, resource purchase, or irreversible dialogue choice. If the game has multiple profiles, use a profile clearly labeled “Practice.”
- Rehearse enemy patterns. Learn opening attacks, feints, stagger thresholds, unblockable indicators, ranged threats, reinforcements, and the distance at which an encounter disengages. Practice surviving without consuming your rarest healing item.
- Map boss phases. Record each phase transition, arena hazard, safe healing window, and attack that requires a particular response. A one-line note such as “phase two adds an area attack after the third parry” is more useful than relying on memory after a failed attempt.
- Run the traversal route. Identify ladders, doors, hiding places, ladders that cannot be climbed during combat, one-way drops, and points of no return. Confirm where you can retreat if an encounter goes badly.
- Test resource crafting. Check which materials are renewable, which are limited, and which recipes compete with one another. Craft the items you expect to use and verify that the menu can be opened safely in the relevant areas.
- Practice an escape decision. Know whether you can flee, break line of sight, use a safe room, reload a checkpoint, or disable an alarm. The correct response to a poor opening is often withdrawal, not a heroic recovery.
- Test controls and assists. Confirm controller bindings, aim or timing assists, subtitles, visual-contrast options, camera settings, vibration, and pause behavior before the final run. Accessibility options that preserve the challenge can remove avoidable execution errors.
- Repeat until the loop is boring. The goal is not a flawless demonstration. It is a predictable sequence in which you know the first safe action, the emergency action, and the point at which to stop spending resources.
Microsoft’s guidance treats difficulty as a group of adjustable mechanics—including enemy numbers, enemy health, resource abundance, timing, and assists. If the game exposes individual controls, keep the mechanics that create the challenge you want and adjust the one that creates an avoidable barrier.
Lock your build and route before the serious run
Hard modes punish improvisation when resources are limited. Create a one-page plan outside the game and update it only after a deliberate practice session.

Choose a build with recovery in mind
- Prefer abilities that reduce incoming risk, improve reliable damage, or create an escape window over abilities that work only in ideal conditions.
- Identify the healing limit and the point at which healing items refill, if they refill at all.
- Reserve at least one option for crowd control, ranged enemies, armor, or status effects instead of specializing entirely in a single target type.
- Mark upgrades that are missable, locked behind optional encounters, or available only before a point of no return.
Order optional content by risk
Do not automatically clear every side encounter as soon as it appears. Rank optional activities by reward, danger, reversibility, and resource cost. Take upgrades that make later mandatory sections safer, postpone encounters that consume rare supplies, and skip content whose reward does not justify the chance of ending the run.
Record checkpoints and irreversible choices
Make a route list with the next checkpoint, the next permanent decision, the intended loadout, and the minimum resources you want to carry forward. Keep it short enough to read during a pause. A route plan is valuable because stress makes players forget which door, merchant, or objective was already completed.
Use layered saves instead of one “perfect” save
A reliable save plan has several independent layers. The exact options depend on the game, but the structure below covers the common case.

Microsoft’s Game Publishing Guide says players must be able to load at least three prior game states. That is a useful minimum for evaluating a game’s recovery design, but it does not mean your particular title exposes three manual slots. The same guidance calls for manual and automatic saves, frequent autosaves where practical—potentially as often as every five minutes—and manual saves that do not overwrite autosaves.
Microsoft’s Xbox version-history guidance says descriptive save files should ideally include a screenshot, timestamp, and brief summary of current progress and objectives. If the game supports naming or notes, use a format such as “Chapter 4 – before vault key – 3 healing items.” If it does not, keep the same information in a separate note and record the in-game location shown on the load screen.

Save safely during a session
- Reach a stable area or wait for the game’s autosave indicator to complete.
- Create the pre-decision save in one manual slot.
- Continue using the other manual slot for routine progress.
- Do not quit while a save icon is active, during a transition that the game identifies as saving, or immediately after a crash or forced shutdown.
- After a major milestone, return to the load screen and verify that the expected timestamp, location, and objective are present.
Verify cloud backups instead of assuming they work
Cloud storage is a synchronization service, not an automatic guarantee that the newest local state is safe. Steam explains that Cloud synchronization can fail or produce conflicts, and that lost data may not be recoverable. Steam Support also states that it can clarify how the system works but cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts for you.
Steam
- Finish the game’s save operation and leave it at the title screen or another stable state.
- Check the game’s Steam Cloud status and wait for synchronization to finish before closing Steam.
- If Steam reports a conflict, compare the local and cloud timestamps and choose the copy that contains the intended objective. Do not click through the dialog without reading it.
- Use Steam’s backup guidance to locate the game’s save directory before a high-value attempt. Save locations vary by developer, and some saves must be copied separately from the game installation.
- After copying, record the folder location and timestamp. A backup you cannot identify later is not a practical recovery plan.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage
- Open the console’s Saved Data management screen.
- Choose the game and select the option to upload saved data to cloud storage.
- Wait for the upload to complete, then note the displayed date and time.
- For a recovery test, use the corresponding Download from Cloud Storage option only when you are certain which local state should be preserved; downloading can replace the local copy.
- On a different console or after reinstalling, confirm that the game appears in the cloud list before beginning the serious run.
Menu labels differ between console generations and system software, so follow the wording shown on your device. The essential check is the same: an upload timestamp must exist, and you must know how to download the selected file without overwriting the wrong local state.
When a cloud conflict appears
- Stop playing until you identify which copy is newer and which objective it contains.
- Take a screenshot of the conflict screen if the platform permits it.
- Choose the copy that matches your documented route, not merely the one with the newest timestamp; a newer file can represent a death or an unwanted branch.
- After resolving the conflict, load the game and verify the location, inventory, and objective before continuing.
Understand permadeath and restricted synchronization
Permadeath is not simply “very hard combat.” It is a save-policy category. If a title disables manual saves or cloud synchronization, buying more storage or subscribing to a cloud service does not make the run safe. The restriction is part of the mode’s design.
If external copying is permitted
Make the external copy before enabling the mode, while the game is still in a normal state. Confirm that the copy contains the intended profile and that the file can be recognized by the platform. Do not rely on a copy made after the mode has already locked or transformed the save system.
If copying is forbidden
Accept that the run cannot be restored through ordinary means. Plan shorter sessions, end each session after a confirmed autosave or checkpoint, and play conservatively when tired. Avoid starting a high-risk encounter near the end of a long session, when attention and reaction time are lower.

Separate practice from commitment
Use the practice loop to learn the exact section that ends runs, then start the restricted run only when you can explain its route without consulting a guide. A restricted mode is safer because you reduce uncertainty before entering it—not because a backup system can bypass its rules.

Hardest difficulty should mean the challenge you want, not an accidental collection of interface problems. Before the serious run, test every setting that affects information or execution:
- Subtitle size, speaker labels, and sound indicators for attacks or objectives
- Visual contrast, color filters, motion reduction, camera shake, and field of view
- Button remapping, toggle-versus-hold behavior, stick sensitivity, and trigger thresholds
- Aim assist, timing windows, parry indicators, navigation aids, and damage feedback
- Pause behavior, photo mode, menu access during encounters, and whether cutscenes can be skipped
Record which settings are allowed by the mode and which might disable a reward. Change them during practice, then lock the configuration before the final run so a panic-driven menu change does not invalidate your goal.
Session discipline prevents avoidable losses
Preparation also means managing the conditions in which you play.

- Quit from the game’s own menu rather than closing the application during a transition.
- After a crash, forced update, or power interruption, load and inspect the save before making new progress.
- Stop after a death that changes the route or consumes a rare resource; immediately replaying while frustrated often compounds the mistake.
- Keep a brief log of deaths: location, enemy or hazard, resource state, and the decision that caused the failure. Practice the specific failure, not the whole game.
Troubleshoot the common failure cases
The hardest mode is missing from the difficulty menu
Check whether it is unlocked by completion, tied to New Game, or available only when creating a new profile. If the title documents a new-game-only rule, finish your practice on another save and begin a fresh run.

The latest save is not on the load screen
Return to the title screen, wait for autosave completion, and inspect every profile and save slot. Do not overwrite older slots while investigating. If the game uses cloud synchronization, compare local and cloud timestamps before selecting a replacement.
The platform asks which cloud file to keep
Pause, identify the objective and timestamp in each copy, and select the one that matches your route. If neither is clearly correct, preserve the local and cloud files separately if the platform allows it before resolving the prompt.
A death erased more progress than expected
Re-read the mode’s death description and identify its reset boundary. Update your route notes to mark that boundary, then shorten future sessions so you reach the next protected state more often. Do not assume that a manual save can change a mode that explicitly forbids one.

You are running out of a critical resource
Return to the practice save, test a lower-cost strategy, and revise the route order. Check whether the resource is renewable, whether an optional encounter consumes it, and whether a different upgrade provides the same function. Restarting the practice section is preferable to discovering the shortage deep into a restricted run.
Final pre-run checklist
- The mode’s death penalty and reset scope are written down.
- You know whether difficulty, manual saves, quick-saves, autosaves, cloud sync, and cross-progression are available.
- The build, route, missable upgrades, healing limits, and irreversible choices are documented.
- You have a pre-decision save, a rotating manual slot, and confirmed autosaves where the game permits them.
- Cloud upload time is visible, and you know how to download the correct file.
- Any permitted external copy was made before entering a restricted mode.
- Controls, accessibility options, pause behavior, and visual or audio cues have been tested.
- You can describe the first difficult encounter, its escape option, and the resource limit you must preserve.
The safest hardest-difficulty run is not the one with the most elaborate equipment. It is the one in which the rules are known, the route is rehearsed, the saves are layered, and every recovery option has been verified before failure occurs.
