You can use an MKV recording in a YouTube Live event by sending it through an encoder—not by attaching the MKV as the event itself. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm your encoder can read the MKV’s video and audio tracks, connect the event’s stream URL and key, and start the event after checking YouTube’s incoming preview. You do not automatically need to convert MKV to MP4: first check what your encoder accepts. YouTube recommends MP4 for ordinary video uploads, which is a different workflow.
Choose between a live event and a regular video upload
Use an encoder-based live event if viewers should watch at a scheduled time on a live watch page, with live-event behavior such as chat. The encoder plays the prepared recording and sends it to YouTube as a live feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not establish that every MKV file is supported directly, or that an MKV can be attached to a scheduled live event as a file.
If viewers can watch whenever they want, upload the recording as a regular video instead. YouTube’s recommended upload guidance specifies MP4 as the container; that is upload guidance, not a universal requirement to convert every encoder source to MP4.
Check the MKV before preparing the stream
- Confirm the file is the right source. Check that it plays through the intended beginning and end, and that its audio and video tracks are the ones you want viewers to hear and see.
- Check encoder compatibility. Inspect the MKV’s video and audio tracks, then confirm that the encoder you plan to use can read both the container and those codecs. The YouTube guidance cited here does not specify universal direct MKV support, so do not assume compatibility without checking or testing.
- Decide whether to remux or transcode. If only the container is unsupported and the encoder accepts the tracks, remuxing—changing the container without re-encoding—may be enough. If the codecs or other file properties are incompatible, you may need to transcode. The right choice depends on the file and encoder; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a particular conversion command or guarantee that either operation will work for a specific MKV.
- Keep a verified local copy. Preserve the original recording and check that any prepared copy plays correctly before the event. YouTube advises verifying local archive files during a stream as well.
Set up and start the YouTube Live event
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s channel guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and meet the minimum age requirement of 16 to live stream.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live event and select the encoder workflow. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only in the intended encoder and do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live controls before streaming again.
- Configure the encoder and load the recording. Select the prepared recording as the encoder’s playback source, then enter the stream URL and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Its live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Follow YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and choose a stable bitrate your upload connection can sustain.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended picture and sound in Live Control Room. Check the stream-health status and address any warnings before starting the event.
- Start the event in YouTube. Once the preview and health indicators look right, start the live event from the controls in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder feed and starting the event are distinct actions.
- Monitor the broadcast and archive. Watch for stream-health messages and confirm that a local archive file, if you are recording one, is growing. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Test the parts most likely to fail
Before the scheduled event, run a test using movement and audio similar to the recording. Check that the encoder can play the whole file, that YouTube’s preview shows the expected content, and that the stream-health messages remain clear. This helps catch issues that a short still-image test may not reveal, such as missing audio, playback stopping, or an upload connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate.

If you want to promote the event, YouTube allows a trailer to be uploaded as a regular video and attached to a scheduled stream. Keep that trailer distinct from the encoder feed that plays the full recording live.
Common problems and fixes
- The encoder will not open the MKV: Check its supported containers and the file’s track codecs. If the container alone is the obstacle, try a compatible remux; if the tracks are unsupported, prepare a transcoded copy using settings accepted by the encoder.
- YouTube receives no picture or sound: Check the encoder’s selected source and confirm it is using the intended video and audio tracks. Verify the stream URL and key, then check Live Control Room for incoming preview and health messages.
- The stream is unstable or reports health problems: Check the upload connection and reduce the encoder bitrate if it cannot sustain the selected setting. Confirm constant bitrate encoding and use a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- The preview looks correct but the event is not live: Confirm that you have started the event in Live Control Room; sending the encoder feed alone does not perform that separate step.
- The recording is not archived as expected: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Also verify any local archive file during the event rather than assuming a recording is intact afterward.
