To prepare an image slideshow for a 24/7 YouTube stream, arrange rights-cleared images on a consistent canvas, render and review them as a continuous video, then send that video to YouTube Live with an encoder such as OBS Studio. Set the encoder to YouTube’s recommended ingest and video settings, test the full loop and audio, and plan for the computer and connection to remain available. If you would rather not keep equipment running at home, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube.
1. Build and review the slideshow video
Choose images and a consistent frame
Use only images you have permission to broadcast, and secure permission for any music or narration as well. Arrange the images in the order you want viewers to see them. Choose a canvas and aspect ratio before editing so images do not unexpectedly crop or appear with black bars. The OBS Project guide recommends a 16:9 output for YouTube playback; YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies square pixels and Rec. 709 for SDR video.
Set how long each image stays on screen, whether to use transitions, and whether to add titles or audio. Those are creative decisions, not YouTube requirements. For mostly static images, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point, though it is an editorial suggestion rather than a platform rule.
Render and inspect the complete sequence
Create a continuous video that your encoder can play or capture. YouTube’s live ingestion guidance does not require a particular slideshow authoring app, local playback format, or slideshow length. Preview the rendered video—not just the original images—and check for cropping, letterboxing, scaling artifacts, unreadable text, abrupt transitions, and a visible jump when the last image returns to the first.

If the stream should be silent, verify that the encoder will not send unintended audio. If it includes music or narration, listen to the rendered video and the live test. A slideshow is only the visual source; it is not itself a YouTube live broadcast.
2. Configure the encoder for YouTube Live
Connect OBS Studio to YouTube
-
Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and create or select the intended broadcast. Account eligibility and interface labels can change, so verify the current options in YouTube Studio.
-
In OBS Studio, choose YouTube as the streaming service and use the current connection workflow to connect or enter the stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. The OBS Project’s community-maintained guide describes this process, but its interface steps may drift as software changes: OBS Project: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.
-
Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to the channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Set OBS to capture or play the slideshow video, then configure output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio. Start with YouTube’s current recommendations below, then test the actual output and connection.
-
Start a test stream and check the YouTube preview and status feedback before relying on the broadcast. The OBS guide explains the basic connection workflow; follow current interface labels if they differ.
Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL; its technical guide specifies the YouTube RTMPS endpoint and port 443. In a standard OBS setup, use the current YouTube connection workflow rather than manually guessing an endpoint. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds that should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and square pixels. The complete current guidance is in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
The following figures are YouTube’s encoder bitrate recommendations; the page was checked on 2026-10-03. They are published recommendations, not independent performance measurements. Consult YouTube’s full table for other resolution and frame-rate combinations.

| Output | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For stereo audio, YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps at a 44.1 KHz sample rate. Choose a video bitrate and output quality that your upload connection can sustain reliably rather than simply selecting the highest setting.
RTMPS or HLS?
RTMPS is the straightforward starting point for a routine OBS slideshow stream. HLS is a separate, more specialized ingest option that YouTube describes for premium content needing high quality and resolution at relatively higher latency. HLS ingestion requires muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, and media playlists with short segments, at up to 60 fps. Unless your encoder is specifically configured for YouTube HLS ingestion, these requirements are not needed for a basic OBS workflow. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide and YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
3. Test before leaving the stream unattended
-
Run a speed test on the same internet connection and, where possible, the same computer and network setup you will use for the stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and choosing quality appropriate to the connection.
-
Run a realistic preflight with the intended slideshow, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio. Inspect the YouTube preview and status messages for buffering, dropped frames, incorrect framing, and unexpected sound or silence.

-
Watch the whole sequence, including the transition from the final image to the first. Confirm that any audio remains in sync and loops as intended.
-
Check the public playback at the quality viewers are likely to select. YouTube transcodes a live input into multiple output formats for viewers, so the viewing rendition may differ from the encoder’s input.
-
For a 24/7 broadcast, plan how the encoding machine and internet connection will stay available, and how someone will notice a failure. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a required computer model or minimum specification for a slideshow stream; match the machine to the chosen output and test it under realistic conditions.
4. Keep the stream compliant and operating
Check rights and YouTube rules
Before broadcasting, confirm that you have rights to every image, soundtrack, and recording in the slideshow. Permission to use an image in a video does not necessarily include permission to stream it continuously or use it in monetized content; check the relevant licence and any restrictions. A 24/7 format does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s copyright rules or its monetization policies, including rules concerning reused content. Review the current policies in YouTube Studio and do not assume that looping material makes it original or authorized.

Monitor the live output
While the stream is running, monitor stream health and YouTube’s status messages. Watch for buffering, dropped frames, a lost connection, a frozen or incorrectly framed image, and audio problems. A long-running broadcast also needs an operations plan: know who can check the stream and what to do if the encoder or connection fails. YouTube recommends monitoring health while live, but this does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the broadcast | Wrong service connection, inactive or mistyped stream key, or a stream that has not been started in the encoder. | Reconnect using YouTube’s current Live Control Room workflow, verify the selected broadcast and key, and avoid exposing the key publicly. |
| Buffering or dropped frames | The selected bitrate or quality is not reliable on the available upload connection. | Run a speed test, lower the output quality or bitrate, and repeat a realistic test before leaving the stream running. |
| Images appear cropped, stretched, or surrounded by bars | The source images and output canvas use different aspect ratios or scaling. | Check the canvas dimensions, image scaling, square-pixel output, and the rendered preview at the intended viewer quality. |
| The loop has a visible jump | The final and first frames, transitions, or audio do not join cleanly. | Preview the full rendered loop and adjust the image order, dwell time, transition, or audio ending. |
| Unexpected silence or sound | The encoder audio source does not match the intended slideshow audio. | Check the actual encoded output and live preview, including whether audio should be present at all. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | The encoder machine, network, or connection to YouTube may have failed. | Check the encoder and connection, monitor YouTube’s status messages, and establish a plan for someone to detect and respond to an interruption. |
