Before an Apple Watch battery replacement or other repair, unpair it from its iPhone if you can, remove the band, and protect your account credentials. If the iPhone is unavailable, think carefully before erasing the watch: erasing does not create a backup or remove Activation Lock. The steps below cover Apple’s in-person, mail-in, and Express Replacement routes.
Before you arrange service
Check the service route and appointment
Apple offers in-person service at an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider, as well as mail-in service using a prepaid shipping box. Check whether your chosen location requires an appointment before you go. Route availability can vary by region.
Apple needs to inspect the watch to provide a personalised estimate. The final fee may depend on the model, inspection, coverage, taxes, shipping, and local parts availability. Apple Authorised Service Providers set their own fees and provide their own estimates, so confirm the price and eligibility for your specific watch and location. Check Apple Watch service options.
If you have AppleCare, Apple says battery service is available at no extra charge when battery capacity falls below 80%. Check your plan and current eligibility; a battery concern by itself does not establish that the benefit applies.

Choose a provider with warranty implications in mind
Apple says repairs by Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider are covered by Apple Limited Warranty and AppleCare. Independent providers may offer their own warranties, but their work is not backed by Apple unless required by law. Apple’s Self Service Repair is a separate out-of-warranty option intended for people with experience repairing electronic devices; it is not the preparation process for sending a watch to Apple. Prepare the watch and its data
If you have the paired iPhone, unpair the watch
Use the paired iPhone to unpair the Apple Watch before service. Apple describes unpairing as the backup step, which gives you a way to restore the watch during setup after service. For GPS + Cellular models using Express Replacement, Apple also instructs you to move the mobile plan as part of the process. If the paired iPhone is unavailable, understand erasing first
Erasing the watch deletes its media, data, and settings, but it does not make a backup and does not remove Activation Lock. Do not erase it assuming you can restore data afterward unless you have a backup made separately. If you are unsure whether to erase it, contact the service provider before taking that step.
Remove the band and protect your credentials
- Remove the band before bringing the watch in.
- Do not give anyone your Apple Account password, device passcode, or account security details. Apple’s guidance says to remain present if a technician needs access to the device for software support.
- For Express Replacement, do not send the band or other accessories unless the kit instructions specifically request them.
What to bring or pack
For an in-person appointment
Bring the Apple Watch and, if available, its paired iPhone. Apple also advises bringing accessories related to the issue, identification, and proof of purchase if possible; some repairs may require proof of purchase.

For mail-in or Express Replacement
Use the prepaid box Apple supplies for mail-in service. For Express Replacement, use the packing materials and follow the label, packing, and return directions included with the kit. Keep proof that the courier collected the package. These instructions are specific to the service route; do not substitute a self-purchased box or send accessories unless Apple’s instructions say to do so.

Pair the Apple Watch with your iPhone again. If a backup is available, setup may offer the option to restore from it. Apple says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer. Review Apple’s current service information.
