Before you buy or install a travel eSIM, verify four things: your exact Android model and regional variant support eSIM, the plan covers your destination, your phone is unlocked, and your software is current enough for the carrier’s activation method. Set the travel line as the data SIM only after you arrive or when the plan’s validity rules require it; otherwise your home line can incur roaming charges.
The checks below apply across Android phones, with separate instructions for Pixel and Galaxy devices where their menus differ.
What an eSIM does on an Android phone
An eSIM is a digital SIM embedded in the phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download a carrier profile that contains the information needed to register on that carrier’s network. Google describes it as a digital SIM that lets you activate cellular service, and supported phones can store multiple profiles and switch between lines.
An eSIM is not itself a mobile plan. You still need a carrier or travel-plan provider, destination coverage, an activation method, and a phone allowed to use another operator. The phone may hold several profiles while only one line is selected for mobile data at a time. Voice, text messaging, hotspot use, speed limits, and the validity period depend on the plan rather than on eSIM technology.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
1. Identify the exact phone and regional variant
eSIM support is model- and region-dependent. Two phones with the same retail name can have different SIM hardware or carrier approvals in different countries. Record the model number, country or region where it was sold, and the Android version before buying a plan.
Find the model information
- Open Settings and search for About phone (on some phones it is About device).
- Write down the model name, model number, and Android version exactly as shown.
- Open SIMs, Mobile network, or Connections > SIM manager and look for an option such as Add eSIM, Add mobile plan, or Download a SIM instead?.
- If no eSIM option appears, check the phone maker’s specifications for that precise model and region and ask the carrier whether the device is approved. Do not assume that the presence of a SIM tray means eSIM is also available.
Pixel-specific limits
Google’s current Pixel guidance says US Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL phones have no physical SIM and are eSIM-only. That statement is specific to those US models; it should not be generalized to versions sold elsewhere.
Pixel 7 and later can use two eSIM profiles at the same time when the carrier permits it. “Can store two profiles” does not mean every carrier supports two active eSIM lines, so confirm the operator’s policy before depending on dual eSIM service.

Samsung cautions that some carriers may not support the eSIM capability of a particular Galaxy phone. A Galaxy model can therefore show eSIM hardware yet fail activation with a particular operator. Check both Samsung’s regional specifications and the carrier’s supported-device list.
2. Confirm destination and carrier coverage
A travel eSIM works only where its provider has roaming or a local-network agreement. Coverage can differ by country, territory, and even by the network partner used in a city. Read the plan’s destination list and identify the partner network before purchase.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Check whether the plan is data-only or includes a telephone number, voice, and SMS. A data-only plan can still support calling through internet apps, but it will not necessarily receive ordinary cellular calls or text messages. Also verify whether tethering is permitted and whether high-speed data is capped or throttled after an allowance.
Compare plans on the details that affect a trip
| Item | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Destination coverage | Every country, island, or territory on your itinerary | A plan can cover one country but exclude a neighboring border region or stopover. |
| Partner network | The named local network or networks | Network choice affects rural coverage, 5G availability, and congestion. |
| Data allowance | Total high-speed data and any daily limit | Maps, video, backups, and hotspot use can consume data quickly. |
| Speed policy | Throttling threshold, 5G terms, and deprioritization | “Unlimited” may mean reduced speed after a stated amount. |
| Hotspot | Whether tethering is allowed and how it is counted | Some plans block hotspot traffic or deduct it from a separate allowance. |
| Validity trigger | Whether the clock starts at installation, activation, or first network connection | Installing at home can shorten the usable period on plans that start immediately. |
| Voice and SMS | Included number, incoming service, emergency calling, and messaging limits | Data-only service cannot replace every banking or verification text. |
| Refund and support rules | Cancellation window, identity checks, and support channels | Unused plans may be nonrefundable once downloaded or connected. |
| Activation method | QR code, carrier app, manual code, or in-app search | You need the required credentials and an internet connection. |
3. Check whether the phone is carrier-unlocked
A carrier-locked phone may reject an eSIM profile from another operator even when the hardware supports eSIM. Unlock policies differ by carrier, country, contract, and payment status; there is no universal Android unlock test established by the official guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the home carrier’s own check
- Open the carrier account or support page and look for Device unlock, Network unlock, or an eligibility checker.
- If the result is unclear, contact the carrier with the phone’s IMEI and ask whether it can use another operator’s eSIM while abroad.
- Complete any waiting period, installment payment, or account requirements before departure. Request written confirmation or a reference number.
- After unlocking, restart the phone and install pending carrier or system updates. An unlock does not guarantee that the destination network supports the phone’s radio bands.
Do not confuse an unlocked phone with a plan that includes international roaming. Unlocking permits another profile; it does not provide service or data by itself.
4. Check Android and carrier software requirements
The Android Open Source Project documents carrier-app eSIM activation on devices running Android 9 or higher. The same documentation describes carrier-privilege and profile-metadata checks, so Android 9 is a capability baseline, not a promise that every Android 9-or-newer phone can activate every plan.
Install the latest system and security updates available for your model, then restart. Update the carrier’s activation app if the plan requires one. If a provider gives you a QR code, you may not need an app; if it requires an app, the carrier must authorize that app for the device and profile.

5. Prepare the installation while you still have Wi-Fi
Keep the activation email, QR code, confirmation number, and support contact in an offline note or printed copy. You need internet access to download a profile, and airport Wi-Fi can be slow or require a browser sign-in.
Pixel installation path
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Choose Add SIM or the option to download a new SIM, then select the QR-code or carrier-app method shown by your provider.
- Scan the QR code or enter the activation details manually. Follow the prompts until the profile is downloaded.
- Give the line a clear label such as Travel, but do not select it as the data default until you intend to use it.
Galaxy installation paths
Samsung’s setup flow can offer several methods:
- Scan a carrier QR code: Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM, then scan the code.
- Transfer from another phone: Use the transfer option when the old phone and carrier support it; keep both phones nearby and unlocked during the transfer.
- Search for a mobile plan: Select the plan-search option if Samsung and the carrier provide it in your region.
- Finish later: Skip setup and return to SIM manager after connecting to Wi-Fi.
Menu names vary by Galaxy model, Android version, and region. If the QR code is displayed on the same phone, open it on another screen or use the provider’s manual activation code instead; a phone cannot scan its own full-screen QR image with its camera.
6. Decide when to activate
Google recommends a prepaid international eSIM and says to activate it when you arrive to avoid roaming charges. Follow the plan’s stated validity rule: some plans begin when the profile is installed, while others start only when the eSIM first connects to a supported network.
If the provider confirms that validity starts on first connection, downloading the profile at home is a sensible preparation step. If validity starts at installation, wait until the travel day or arrival unless you need to test activation and accept losing part of the period. Do not delete the profile after installation unless support tells you to; many plans allow a profile to be downloaded only once.
7. Select the travel line without triggering home-line charges
On a Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, select the travel line, and review the controls for mobile data, calls, texts, and roaming. Google states that only one SIM can be the default for mobile data. Choose the travel line for data when you are ready to use it.

On a Galaxy, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager and set the preferred SIM for mobile data. Review the call and text defaults separately; leaving your home SIM selected for calls can still create roaming charges if it connects abroad.
Safer settings for the home line
- Turn off Data roaming on the home SIM.
- Set the travel eSIM as the mobile-data SIM.
- Disable automatic data switching if your phone offers it; otherwise the phone may fall back to the home line when the travel line has a weak signal.
- Keep the home line active only if you need incoming calls or verification texts and your carrier confirms the charges. Otherwise turn that SIM off temporarily.
- Use Wi-Fi calling only when your home carrier explains how it is billed abroad; Wi-Fi calling policies vary.
Test with a small, deliberate action: turn off Wi-Fi, check that the travel line shows service, load a simple web page, then restore Wi-Fi. Check the carrier app or phone data counter afterward.
8. Understand dual-SIM behavior
Dual-SIM phones can keep a physical SIM and an eSIM, or—in supported configurations—two eSIM profiles. The phone may receive calls on more than one line, but data normally uses one selected default. During a call on one line, the other line may become temporarily unavailable depending on the modem and carrier.
Label each line and record which number is used for banking, messaging, and two-factor authentication. Before removing or disabling the home SIM, confirm that you have another way to receive account codes. A data-only travel eSIM does not automatically replace your existing number.

“Add eSIM” is missing
Recheck the exact model and regional variant, install system updates, and verify that the carrier supports eSIM on that model. If the phone is an imported version, the local carrier may not approve it even though another region does.

The QR code is rejected
Confirm that the code has not already been used, that the phone is online, and that you are scanning the complete code without an expired activation email. Try the manual code or carrier app supplied with the same order. Do not reuse a code from a different device unless the provider explicitly permits transfer.
The profile downloads but has no service
Check that the travel line is enabled, mobile data is assigned to it, and the plan covers the country you are in. Allow the phone a few minutes to register, then restart it. If the provider lists a specific network, select that operator manually under the travel SIM’s network settings. Confirm that the phone is unlocked and supports the destination network’s bands.
Data works but calls or texts do not
Review whether the plan is data-only. If it includes voice or SMS, verify that the travel line is selected for the relevant default and that the provider supplied a phone number. Internet calling apps may work over data even when ordinary cellular calling is not included.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe phone keeps using the home SIM
Return to the SIM settings, make the travel eSIM the sole mobile-data choice, turn off automatic data switching, and disable data roaming on the home line. Check the status-bar indicators after switching off Wi-Fi.
10. Keep a practical fallback
Save offline maps, hotel addresses, airline details, and the eSIM provider’s support instructions before leaving. Keep the activation code accessible without cellular data. A physical SIM and ejector tool are optional backups, not requirements for eSIM setup; they are useful only if your phone has a tray and you have a compatible local or home SIM.
Do not factory-reset the phone during a trip unless support has confirmed that every required profile and recovery method is available. A reset can remove downloaded eSIM profiles and leave you without a way to reconnect.
