Prepare the live site a judge will actually visit: make its purpose clear, ensure key pages and interactions work, and check the site against the exact award category’s criteria and submission rules. A visual polish pass alone is not enough. For the Webby Awards’ 2026/2027 website and mobile-site categories, criteria include content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, innovation, and overall experience. Other programs may use different criteria and procedures.

Start with the specific award and category

Before changing the site or paying an entry fee, identify the award program, category, eligibility rules, required entry information, deadline, and any permissions granted by submitting. Use the organizer’s current official pages: rules and dates can change between cycles.

For the Webby Awards’ 2026/2027 website and mobile-site categories, the published judging criteria cover:

  • Content: whether it is relevant and appropriate to its audience.
  • Structure and navigation: whether visitors can find content through consistent, intuitive, transparent navigation.
  • Visual design: whether the presentation is appropriate and considers inclusion for people with disabilities.
  • Functionality: including quick loading and live links.
  • Interactivity, innovation, and overall experience.

Read the criteria for your own category and turn each one into a short evidence list: the page, content, interaction, or design decision that lets a reviewer assess it. This is a preparation aid, not a substitute for the organizer’s criteria. Webby Awards judging criteria

Make the public site understandable without a guided tour

Review the public URL as someone who has never seen the project and has no private context. A judge should be able to infer what the site is for, who it serves, and where to find its important material from the site itself. Do not rely on an accompanying pitch to compensate for missing pages, confusing labels, or an interaction that only the team knows how to trigger.

  1. Open the exact public URL you intend to submit, not a staging link or an authenticated view unavailable to reviewers.
  2. Check that the homepage communicates the central idea and provides a clear route to the most important sections.
  3. Follow the main navigation and representative links. Confirm labels match their destinations and that key content is not hidden behind broken links or unexplained controls.
  4. Try the important visitor paths, including forms, menus, media, and other interactive elements relevant to the entry.
  5. Check the experience at the viewport sizes and devices that matter for the intended audience. Do not assume a desktop-only review represents a mobile experience.

The Webby guidance describes good navigation as consistent, intuitive, transparent, and helpful in locating content. Its judging process involves multiple independent reviewers inspecting entries, which makes a self-explanatory live experience more useful than a site that depends on a personal walkthrough. Check function, loading, links, and accessibility

Test the actual experience, not just screenshots or a design file. The Webby criteria mention quick loading and live links under functionality, and disability inclusion in the visual-design description. Those are criteria to consider; the cited material does not establish one universal technical test suite or accessibility standard for every award.

  • Load the public pages and verify that the content needed to understand the entry appears.
  • Test navigation, calls to action, and key interactive features in the live environment.
  • Check that links relevant to the experience resolve to the intended destination.
  • Review whether visual content and interaction choices include people with disabilities; consult the target program’s rules for any specific requirements.
  • Capture representative page states for your own review if useful, but do not treat a screenshot as proof that a live link, interaction, or full visitor journey works.

Keep a short issue list, fix problems that block or obscure the core experience, then repeat the checks on the public URL. The award criteria are judging dimensions, not a claim that a particular site has passed an audit.

Complete the entry accurately and check rights

Submit factual, complete information and confirm that you have authority to enter the work. Check project and team credits, rights to content and images, URL availability, category fit, and every requested field. CSS Awards rules identify false credits, copyright complaints, unavailable content, manipulated information, and attempts to influence judges among potential grounds for rejection or removal. Also read what submission allows the organizer to do with the entry. The Webby FAQ says submission grants exhibition, promotion, and publication rights. Make sure the relevant rights holders understand and permit that grant before submitting. Webby Awards FAQ

Understand the judging process—and do not try to influence it

Organizers do not all judge in the same way. In the Webby example, Associate Academy Members independently inspect and rate entries against the criteria, with multiple members evaluating each entry. Shortlisted entries then go to Executive Academy members with category-specific expertise, who cast ballots determining honorees, nominees, and winners. Webby Awards judging process

CSS Awards describes a different process: it verifies that the public URL works and the submission is complete, independent judges score entries against five criteria, and verified community voting supplies a secondary signal when entries are closely matched. Its rules also identify attempts to influence judges as a possible reason for rejection or removal. Submit complete, accurate materials and leave judging to the stated process. Check the calendar and fee before committing

Confirm current deadlines, eligibility, category rules, and fees on the organizer’s live pages before paying. The Webby entry guidelines state that a fee covers review, not a guaranteed score, nomination, or award. They also say an agency-branded case-study site is ineligible to win. Webby Awards entry guidelines

As a dated example rather than a standing schedule, the Webby quick-facts page lists September 15, 2026 as the 31st Annual call opening and October 30, 2026 as the early entry deadline. Verify the live page before relying on those dates. The same page says the 30th Annual awards received nearly 13,000 entries from all 50 states and over 70 countries worldwide; that figure describes that cycle’s scale, not an individual category’s competition or odds of winning. Capture a reference view of the live site

A browser screenshot can help your team compare visible page states during its own review, document a layout, or check what a public page looks like at a chosen viewport. It cannot establish that a site meets award criteria, nor replace testing links, loading, accessibility, and interactive behavior. For a manual check, open the public URL in a browser, inspect the page at the viewport relevant to your audience, and capture the page state using the browser’s screenshot or print controls. Then test the important paths directly in the browser.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-request capture of a public page, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.

FAQ

Does paying an entry fee improve the chance of winning?

No guarantee follows from paying. Webby entry fees cover review, not a guaranteed score, nomination, or award; CSS Awards likewise says paid submission never guarantees nomination or an award.

Should I submit a case-study page instead of the actual site?

Follow the selected category’s rules. In the Webby guidelines, an agency-branded case-study site is ineligible to win; do not assume a case-study presentation can substitute for eligible work.
