Answer each prompt directly, use verifiable details rather than startup jargon, and explain why the specific program fits your next stage. Clear writing helps reviewers assess the company; it cannot replace weak evidence or guarantee acceptance.
Build a clear, consistent account of the company
Before filling in the form, prepare a concise account that connects the customer, problem, product, team, evidence, business potential, program fit, and next milestones. Each answer should add a useful part of that account without contradicting the deck or videos.
Techstars’ application preview asks about the problem, proposed product, team, traction, revenue and funding, potential business model, target customers, competitors, competitive advantage, timing, customer acquisition, and upcoming milestones. It also requests a product demo video, pitch deck, and team introduction video. Write in concrete language. A reader should be able to tell who the customer is, what they struggle with, and what your product does. Y Combinator’s application guide similarly advises founders to express the company clearly and avoid generic descriptions that conceal what is distinctive about the business or its founders. Explain why this team can solve this problem
Connect each founder’s relevant experience, skills, and customer insight to the work ahead. If the founders have worked together before, describe how that experience informs the way they operate. If you have a direct connection to the customer or problem, make it specific rather than relying on a broad claim of passion.
Techstars says its selection order is “team, team, team, market, progress, idea.” That is Techstars’ stated approach, not a rule that all accelerators follow. Its guidance also asks why the founders are the right people to solve the problem, whether they understand the market, and why now is the right time. Be candid about gaps. State what the team does not yet know or cannot yet do, then explain how you are addressing it. Techstars advises applicants to highlight strengths while being upfront about weaknesses; pretending to have every capability can undermine credibility. Describe the market, product, and alternatives plainly
Make the customer and problem concrete
Name the customer in a way that distinguishes them from a broad category, and describe the costly, frequent, or otherwise meaningful problem they face. Explain what they do today to cope with it, where those alternatives fall short, and how you know. Avoid unsupported claims such as “everyone needs this” or “there are no competitors.”

Separate what exists from what is planned
Explain what the product can do now, who has used or tested it, and what remains planned. Identify meaningful alternatives—including manual workarounds or doing nothing—and state the advantage you can support. If the advantage is still a hypothesis, label it as one.
Address viability and timing
Answer how the company could make money, how it expects to reach customers, and why the timing is favorable. Distinguish a tested business model from an assumption. For timing, point to a concrete change in customer behavior, technology, regulation, or market conditions only when it is relevant and supportable.

Show progress with evidence that matches your stage
Use the strongest real indicators available to demonstrate that you have acted on the idea and learned from it. Depending on the company, useful evidence may include a working prototype, product releases, customer conversations, usage, signed pilots, revenue, retention, or other meaningful validation. Explain what each figure measures, over what period, and what it tells you.
Techstars recommends making progress on a prototype or product, showing that the founders have acted on their thinking, and using early traction or data points to test core assumptions. Do not describe a forecast, target, or expression of interest as traction. If you have no revenue yet, say so and use the most relevant evidence you do have rather than implying sales. Choose a program for fit, then follow its process
Accelerators differ in geography, industry focus, stage expectations, schedule, selection process, and application requirements. Check the specific program’s current information before applying, and be ready to explain how its focus and support align with the company’s next milestones. Do not assume that a well-known program is automatically the right one.
For Techstars specifically, applicants may select programs or submit a general application, and Techstars says sending multiple applications does not increase acceptance chances. These instructions describe Techstars’ workflow only; other accelerators may handle program selection differently. Prepare answers and materials for review
- Answer the actual prompt. Start with the requested information, respect word or character limits, and cut material that does not help answer the question. - Keep the materials aligned. Use the deck and any requested videos to clarify the same account of the customer, product, team, and progress. Check that figures and descriptions match across the form and attachments; do not add unsupported claims in a video or slide.
- Make evidence easy to inspect. Use working links and label relevant metrics or milestones clearly. If a claim depends on a definition or time period, include that context with it.

Prepare for the interview and learn from rejection
If invited to interview, be ready to discuss what the team has accomplished, how long the founders have worked together, how they work together, and why they have an advantage. Expect to explain assumptions and weaknesses as clearly as strengths. Techstars describes first- and second-round interviews and estimates that invitations may arrive one to four weeks after the deadline; this is a Techstars estimate that can change by cohort, not a general accelerator timeline. A rejection is not a reason to resend an unchanged application. Note any feedback, then identify what materially changed: the product, customer understanding, team, or validation. Techstars encourages applicants to apply again and says it values persistence and the ability to apply feedback, but reapplying does not guarantee acceptance.
