To run 60 fps clips in a YouTube Live playlist at 30 fps, make 30 fps working copies of the clips and set the outgoing encoder or streaming service to 30 fps. Then check fast motion, audio sync, and YouTube stream health in a test stream before relying on the playlist. YouTube accepts live input up to 60 fps, but that limit does not mean your outgoing stream must use 60 fps.

What changes when you convert 60 fps footage to 30 fps?

A 60 fps clip contains 60 frames each second; a 30 fps version contains 30. A straightforward conversion therefore reduces the temporal sampling by half. It does not necessarily change the clip’s duration, but quick movement can look less smooth, and an event visible in only one of the discarded frames may no longer appear. Keep the original files and review the converted clips before using them in a playlist.

YouTube’s live documentation specifies ingest settings, not a preferred offline conversion algorithm. A simple frame-selection conversion and motion interpolation are different approaches: interpolation attempts to create intermediate frames and can introduce visual artifacts. Compare results on representative clips, checking motion, duration, and audio sync rather than assuming one method is best for every kind of footage.

Prepare the clips and choose the stream output

  1. Confirm the source and target rates. Check that the files are actually 60 fps and that 30 fps is the intended outgoing live frame rate. This workflow assumes the playlist feeds a live encoder or a streaming service that sends the stream to YouTube.
  2. Retain the originals and create 30 fps copies. Use your video editor or transcoder’s frame-rate setting to make working copies at 30 fps. YouTube does not prescribe an editor or conversion method. Inspect fast motion for judder or missed events, and check that the converted file’s duration and audio remain synchronized.
  3. Keep resolution appropriate to the intended stream. The converted clips do not have to be reduced in resolution merely because the frame rate changes. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live video into output formats for viewers, but your outgoing resolution and bitrate still need to suit the encoder and connection.
  4. Set the live output to 30 fps. Configure the encoder or service’s output frame rate as 30 fps. If it uses YouTube’s automatic detection instead, verify that the detected frame rate is 30 fps. The YouTube Live API recognizes 30fps; it also provides variable frame-rate detection paired with variable resolution.

Configure the YouTube live encoder

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use the codec and resolution supported by your encoder, then select the matching bitrate recommendation. The following figures are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not universal offline export targets.

For a 30 fps playlist stream, use the 30 fps row matching your resolution and codec. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its current recommendations are on Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Settings can change, so check the page when configuring a stream.

Test the playlist and monitor stream health

  1. Build a short test playlist with the kinds of footage the full stream will contain, including fast movement and representative audio.
  2. Start a test stream with the intended resolution, 30 fps output, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
  3. Watch the stream and listen for sync problems. Look for judder, missing moments, unexpected frame-rate changes, or audio drift.
  4. Check YouTube’s stream health indicators before running the playlist for an event or extended period. YouTube’s API documents health issues including frame-rate mismatch; resolve warnings by verifying the outgoing encoder rate and source-to-output chain.

YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health. See LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API for the API’s stream status details.

Do not confuse RTMP/RTMPS and HLS requirements

HLS is a separate YouTube ingest path with additional requirements. Its guidance specifies M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and up to 60 fps. Those HLS-specific container and codec requirements do not automatically apply to an RTMP/RTMPS workflow. Follow the documentation for the ingest protocol actually configured: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The stream reports a frame-rate mismatch: Confirm the encoder is sending 30 fps, not simply playing 30 fps files through an output set to 60 fps. If automatic detection is enabled, check the detected rate.
  • Fast motion looks uneven: Review the converted clip and compare another conversion approach on the same segment. A 60-to-30 fps conversion removes temporal samples; interpolation may smooth motion but can create artifacts.
  • Audio no longer lines up: Compare the converted file’s duration and audio sync with the original, then re-export or adjust the conversion settings before adding it to the production playlist.
  • The live stream buffers or looks poor: Verify the bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen resolution and codec, and confirm CBR and the keyframe interval. The published bitrate figures are encoder recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection can sustain them.
  • You are following an HLS guide while using RTMPS: Check the configured ingest protocol. Do not impose HLS’s M2TS requirement on an RTMP/RTMPS setup.
