To send a standard SDR YouTube Live stream from 10-bit footage, make sure the outgoing signal—not just the source file—is 8-bit and Rec. 709. If the footage is HDR, tone-map or convert it to SDR before or during encoding; changing a bit-depth setting alone does not guarantee a correct conversion. Test the result in YouTube Live Control Room before your event.
What “10-bit video” means for an 8-bit SDR stream
Bit depth describes how finely a signal can represent tonal values. HDR describes a broader image encoding and display target; the terms are related but not interchangeable. A 10-bit file is not necessarily HDR, and uploading or playing a 10-bit source does not by itself make the live stream HDR.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies 8-bit and Rec. 709 for SDR. Its separate HDR guidance specifies a 10-bit HDR signal. YouTube also transcodes incoming live streams into multiple playback formats, but that is for delivering video to different devices and network conditions; it does not replace sending the intended SDR signal at ingest.
Prepare the footage and set the outgoing signal
- Decide whether the stream should be SDR. The steps here target a standard dynamic-range stream, not HDR playback on supported devices.
- Inspect the source. Check whether it is actually HDR and, if so, whether it uses PQ or HLG. Do not infer HDR solely from a 10-bit label.
- Convert HDR to SDR when necessary. Use an appropriate tone-mapping or HDR-to-SDR conversion in your editor, media pipeline, or encoder. The transform depends on the source and the software; simply selecting 8-bit output may not preserve highlights or color correctly.
- Configure the encoder’s outgoing SDR signal. Set output to 8-bit and Rec. 709, then choose a codec and other live settings supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Test before the event. Send a test with representative movement and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then inspect the result on an SDR display.
YouTube’s official guidance recommends testing representative audio and movement before streaming and monitoring stream health during the event. Do not expect an identical appearance on every display: playback devices and viewing conditions vary.

SDR settings versus YouTube’s HDR path

The HDR column describes a different workflow, not a required upgrade for an SDR broadcast. YouTube’s official HDR page describes HDR signaling and supported setup; its SDR encoder guidance defines the 8-bit Rec. 709 target.
Live settings that matter beyond color
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate and resolution: Follow the current values in YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance for your selected codec and resolution. Do not assume that an SDR conversion changes those requirements.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR for live encoding.
- Audio and motion: Include both in a pre-event test so the preview represents the actual program.
- Stream health: Watch the Live Control Room indicators during the broadcast and respond to warnings rather than relying only on the local encoder preview.
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of a particular visual result. YouTube states that it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch.

Troubleshooting a poor-looking SDR conversion
The image looks washed out or too dark
Check that the encoder is sending Rec. 709 SDR and that an HDR source has been properly tone-mapped. Verify the source transfer function and the conversion behavior of the editor or encoder; an 8-bit output selection alone is not proof of correct HDR-to-SDR mapping.
Highlights are clipped or colors look unnatural
Review the conversion step and its treatment of HDR highlights and color. There is no universal tone-mapping recipe established for every source and encoder, so verify the settings in the current manual for the exact software and version you use.

The result differs between the encoder preview and YouTube playback
Check the YouTube preview and stream-health status, and evaluate playback on an SDR display. YouTube transcodes for playback, while display capabilities and viewing conditions differ; the same image is not guaranteed on every screen.
The stream is unstable or has encoding warnings
Compare the encoder’s codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current live encoder guidance. Test with representative motion and audio and monitor stream health during the live event.
