Pokémon Pokopia launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on March 5, 2026. The next announced purchase is the boxed Pokémon Pokopia + Expansion Pass package, scheduled for October 29, 2026 at selected retailers. It uses a Nintendo Game-Key Card: the box contains a physical card, but the complete game must be downloaded before you can play.
You can also buy Pokopia digitally through Nintendo eShop or My Nintendo Store. Nintendo says the game content is the same in both formats, so the practical choice is between a no-card digital license and a boxed Game-Key Card that still needs storage space and an initial internet download.

The original digital preorder window opened on November 12, 2025, ahead of the March 5, 2026 launch. Because the base game is already released, current preorder listings concern the announced Pokémon Pokopia + Expansion Pass package rather than a first-day preorder of the base game.

How to pre-order Pokémon Pokopia digitally
Digital Pokopia is purchased through Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or through My Nintendo Store. A preorder can be preloaded before release, so the software is on the console when the release time arrives.
- Open Nintendo eShop on your Nintendo Switch 2, or sign in to My Nintendo Store.
- Search for Pokémon Pokopia or the Pokémon Pokopia + Expansion Pass listing.
- Check the edition, release date and account region before paying.
- Complete the purchase with the Nintendo Account that will use the game.
- Leave the console connected to the internet and with sufficient free storage for the preload and any updates.
- Start the game after the release window shown on your purchase confirmation.
The digital license is linked to the purchasing Nintendo Account. It does not give you a box or card, but it eliminates card swapping and keeps the game available from the console’s software menu.

- Confirm that the format is identified as a Game-Key Card.
- Check the retailer’s stated release date, delivery estimate, taxes, shipping charge and cancellation policy.
- Review the region or edition information if you are ordering from another country.
- Keep the order confirmation until the card arrives and you have verified the package contents.
- After delivery, insert the card into the Switch 2 and connect to the internet to download the game data.
A listing that merely says “physical” is not enough to establish that it contains a conventional cartridge with the complete game. For Pokopia’s announced package, the decisive wording is Game-Key Card.
Is the Pokopia physical version a real cartridge?
It is a physical product, but it is not a cartridge containing the complete game. Nintendo’s support documentation explains: “Game-key cards only store a ‘key’ required to launch the software.” The first time you use the card, the full software data must be downloaded over the internet.
That makes the Game-Key Card different from a traditional game card in three important ways:
- Initial download required: the card does not provide all playable data by itself.
- Storage is still required: the downloaded software resides in the Switch 2’s system memory or a compatible microSD Express card.
- Card insertion remains necessary: Nintendo says the Game-Key Card must be inserted while downloading and each time the game is played.
The box can still matter to collectors and may generally be lent or resold as a physical item, subject to the retailer’s and platform’s terms. However, it does not provide the same card-free convenience as a digital purchase.

How much storage does Pokopia need on Switch 2?
The base Pokopia product page lists a 6.8 GB game file size. The October package announcement specifies at least 10 GB of available storage, and updates or additional package content may require more. Use the 10 GB figure, not 6.8 GB, when planning an installation for the Game-Key Card package.
Where the download is stored
The game data is saved in the Switch 2’s system memory or on a compatible microSD Express card. Both digital and Game-Key Card editions use storage because the complete software is downloaded for play.
Storage checklist
- Check available space in the Switch 2 storage settings before ordering or redeeming the game.
- Allow more than 10 GB where possible so updates do not immediately fill the drive.
- If space is tight, install a compatible microSD Express card before beginning the download.
- Do not remove the Game-Key Card during its initial download.
- Keep the console powered and connected to a stable internet connection until the installation completes.
The 10 GB figure is a minimum stated for the October package, not a promise that every future update will fit within that amount.
Digital versus Game-Key Card: what actually changes?
Nintendo says, “The game content is the same no matter whether you buy the physical or digital version.” The differences are therefore about access, storage workflow and ownership format rather than different gameplay content.

Choose digital if these are your priorities
- You want to launch Pokopia without carrying or inserting a card.
- You switch among several installed games and prefer everything in the software menu.
- You are comfortable with an account-linked license rather than a boxed copy.
- You want to preload a preorder directly to the console.
Choose the Game-Key Card if these are your priorities
- You want a physical package for a collection or gift.
- You value the possibility of lending or reselling the boxed item, within applicable terms.
- You prefer buying through a game retailer rather than an online storefront.
- You understand that the card is a launch key, not a complete offline cartridge.
Does the physical edition require internet?
Yes, the initial Game-Key Card setup requires an internet connection because the complete game data must be downloaded. Nintendo also says the card must remain inserted while downloading and whenever the game is played.
Nintendo’s stated requirement is an internet connection for the download; online play and other online features independently require internet access. After installation, keep the card inserted and follow any connection or verification prompt shown by the console. Do not assume that owning the box eliminates all network requirements.
Can you play after the download finishes?
The confirmed requirements are that the software be downloaded and that the Game-Key Card be inserted each time you play. Nintendo separately lists internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online where specified for online features. Therefore, plan for internet during installation and whenever a network feature or console prompt requires it; the card remains necessary even when the data is already stored locally.

What the October package includes
The announced product name is Pokémon Pokopia + Expansion Pass. Retail listings should identify that complete name so you do not accidentally order the already-released base game when you want the later package. The format is still a Game-Key Card, which means the Expansion Pass package also needs a full download and at least 10 GB of free space according to Nintendo’s announcement. The available information does not establish a separate storage figure for later updates, so leave additional headroom.

How regional pricing and delivery affect your order
No single worldwide price or shipping promise applies. Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store show the price, currency and tax treatment for the account’s region. Retailers may add shipping, collect different taxes or change delivery estimates when stock moves. A lower sticker price can therefore be offset by shipping or a delayed arrival, while a local retailer may cost more but deliver on October 29.
Before submitting payment, compare the final checkout total rather than only the advertised price. For a physical order, check whether the retailer charges immediately or at dispatch, its cancellation rules, and whether the listing is imported. For a digital order, confirm the purchasing account’s country because the license is tied to that account’s storefront. Save the receipt or order confirmation in either case.
How to claim the Ditto Rug early-purchase bonus
Nintendo says the in-game Ditto Rug is available with either the Game-Key Card or digital version. It is claimed through the game’s Mystery Gift feature after that feature becomes available.
- Start Pokopia and progress until Mystery Gift is available.
- Use a profile linked to a Nintendo Account.
- Connect the console to the internet.
- Open Mystery Gift and complete the Ditto Rug claim instructions.
- Redeem it by the stated deadline: January 31, 2027.
Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for this claim. The deadline is time-sensitive, so verify it if you are reading this after the stated date or if Nintendo changes the promotion terms.
Platform, multiplayer and account requirements
Pokémon Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo lists handheld, tabletop and TV modes, with the following play configurations:

The game will not launch from the physical package
Insert the Game-Key Card. Nintendo requires the card to be present each time the Game-Key Card software is played, even after the full download is stored on the console.

The Ditto Rug is missing
Confirm that Mystery Gift is available, the player profile is linked to a Nintendo Account and the console is online. Also check that the claim is made before January 31, 2027 and that the purchase qualifies under Nintendo’s promotion terms.

Buy the digital edition if your deciding factor is convenience: it downloads to the console, can be preloaded for a preorder and never needs a card inserted. Buy the Game-Key Card edition if the box is important to you and you accept the initial download, the minimum 10 GB storage requirement and the need to insert the card for every play session.
Neither format provides a different version of the game. The important misconception to avoid is treating the Game-Key Card as a complete cartridge: it is a physical launch key backed by a full software download.

Is the Pokopia physical edition a complete cartridge?
