Practice in two tracks: first solve problems without assistance, then rehearse the exact AI-enabled workflow only after the employer confirms that generative AI is allowed for that interview stage. An AI-permitted interview still evaluates your ability to frame requirements, choose an approach, direct the tool, verify its output, debug failures, and explain trade-offs.
Permission is never implied by silence. Rules can differ between a live interview, a take-home project, an online test and a technical challenge, and they can limit which tools or features you use. Treat the employer’s written instructions or a recruiter’s explicit answer as the source of truth.
What an AI-allowed coding interview actually tests
Allowing an assistant changes the workflow, not the standard for engineering judgment. You remain responsible for the result and for being able to explain it. Interviewers can observe whether you:
- Turn an ambiguous prompt into explicit requirements, assumptions and constraints.
- Select an appropriate data structure and algorithm before asking for implementation help.
- Write prompts that provide useful context instead of outsourcing the entire problem.
- Recognize when a generated suggestion is incorrect, overcomplicated or unsafe.
- Run tests, inspect edge cases, check complexity and verify API details.
- Modify unfamiliar code while preserving its intended behavior.
- Communicate trade-offs, limitations and remaining risks clearly.
- Follow the stated policy, protect confidential information and represent your own experience truthfully.
A tool can produce code quickly while still leaving you with the hard questions: Is the interpretation correct? Does the code terminate? What happens with duplicate values, empty input, integer overflow, concurrent access or malformed data? Can you explain every important line? Those questions are why unaided fundamentals remain part of preparation even when assistance is permitted.

Check the permission boundary before you practice for a specific round
Employer guidance consistently separates preparation from live evaluation. The following policies illustrate the pattern; they are not interchangeable rules, so read the instructions for your own application.

OpenAI’s candidate guidance likewise notes that formats include pair coding, take-home projects and technical tests, with tool expectations varying by interview. A take-home allowance therefore does not automatically carry over to a live screen.
Ask a precise permission question
Send this before the round and keep the answer with the calendar invitation or preparation document:

Is screen sharing required, and are recordings or transcripts allowed?
Ask again if the format changes. “AI is allowed” is incomplete unless it identifies the stage, tool, feature and any sharing or recording requirements.
Build the two-track practice system
Track one: establish an unaided baseline
Start every new problem with the assistant closed. This preserves the reasoning an interviewer must be able to see if the permission changes or the tool fails.
- Restate the task. Describe the input, output, success conditions and any ambiguity in your own words.
- Ask for constraints. Clarify input size, value ranges, ordering guarantees, mutability, latency expectations and error behavior. If no interviewer is present, write explicit assumptions.
- Choose a plan. Name the algorithm, data structure and target time and space complexity before coding.
- Design tests. Include a normal example, the smallest valid input, an empty or missing value where relevant, duplicates, already sorted or reverse-sorted data, maximum-size input and invalid input.
- Implement a first version. Use documentation you are explicitly allowed to consult, but do not ask an AI to solve the problem.
- Explain the approach aloud. Give a short correctness argument and complexity analysis as if an interviewer were listening.
Record a simple baseline: time to a correct solution, number of hints needed, failing tests, bugs found during review and whether you could explain every design choice. The baseline makes later AI-assisted improvement measurable rather than subjective.

- Act as an interviewer who asks clarifying questions without proposing an algorithm.
- Generate adversarial test cases for your stated approach.
- Challenge one assumption or identify a possible invariant violation.
- Review a failing test and suggest likely causes without rewriting the solution.
- Explain an unfamiliar library API, then verify the explanation against official documentation.
- Critique readability, error handling or complexity after you have a working solution.
Do not begin by requesting a complete answer. A full generated solution hides the very skills the interview is designed to reveal and makes it harder to detect copied assumptions.
A repeatable practice session
A 90-minute session can cover both modes without letting the assistant become a crutch.

Use a fresh problem in the AI segment rather than polishing the unaided solution until it looks perfect. The comparison is more useful when both attempts involve similar difficulty.

Prompt patterns that preserve your reasoning
Good prompts expose your work and define what the assistant may and may not do. Replace the details with the problem you are practicing.
Interviewer mode
Act as a coding interviewer. Ask one clarification question at a time about this problem. Do not propose an algorithm, code or edge cases unless I explicitly request a hint.
Assumption challenge
Here are my assumptions and proposed invariant: [describe them]. Identify one condition that would break the invariant. Do not rewrite the solution; explain the smallest counterexample.
Test generation
Given this algorithm and complexity target: [summary], produce five adversarial inputs. Include duplicates, a boundary-size input and a case that distinguishes stable from unstable behavior. Explain what each test checks.
Failing-test review
This test fails: [input and expected result]. Here is my code and observed result: [details]. List likely causes in order of probability. Ask me to inspect one location at a time; do not provide a replacement implementation.

Code comprehension
Explain this function’s control flow and invariants in plain language. Then state its time and space complexity and identify any claim that requires verification in the language documentation.
Trade-off rehearsal
Interview me about this design. Ask why I chose the data structure, what happens at maximum input size, and which requirement would force a different approach. Wait for my answer before giving feedback.
Never paste confidential interview prompts, proprietary code, personal data or credentials into a model. Use a synthetic equivalent when practicing.

Verification is the core AI skill
Treat generated code as an untrusted draft. Verification should be visible in your practice log and explainable aloud.
Check behavior
- Run the examples from the prompt and independently calculate the expected result.
- Add minimal, maximal, empty, duplicate, negative and malformed inputs appropriate to the problem.
- Test stateful code across repeated calls so hidden global state is exposed.
- For concurrent or asynchronous code, exercise ordering, cancellation and shared-state races.
Check reasoning
- Trace a loop or recursion on paper and state the invariant after each iteration.
- Confirm that every branch returns or terminates and that recursion has a reachable base case.
- Recalculate time and space complexity from the actual operations, not the tool’s description.
- Look for accidental quadratic behavior, repeated sorting, unnecessary copies and unbounded memory growth.
Check language and APIs
- Verify function names, argument order, return types and version-specific behavior in official documentation.
- Check error handling, encoding, locale, numeric precision and nullability rules.
- Search for hallucinated packages, methods or configuration flags before relying on them.
- Run a formatter, compiler, linter or test suite when the practice environment provides one.
If the assistant’s answer conflicts with documentation or a failing test, trust the reproducible evidence, explain the conflict and correct the code yourself.
Practice the explanation, not just the implementation
An interviewer may ask what the tool suggested and why you accepted or rejected it. Use a four-part explanation:
- Context: state the requirements and constraints you used.
- Decision: describe your algorithm, data structure and complexity target.
- Verification: name the tests, documentation checks and debugging steps you performed.
- Trade-off: explain what the solution gives up, such as memory, implementation simplicity or support for a different constraint.
For example: “The assistant suggested sorting first, but the input can be streamed and the required result is one pass. I kept a hash set instead, verified duplicate handling with three cases and accepted O(n) extra space to preserve O(n) time.” This demonstrates judgment rather than tool dependence.
Timed drills and progress measures
Alternate two timed rounds each week:
- Unaided round: solve under the rules of a conventional interview.
- AI-allowed round: use only the features permitted by the simulated policy and narrate every request.
Compare the rounds on correctness, time to isolate a bug, edge-case coverage, quality of prompts, ability to reject a bad suggestion, code-comprehension speed and clarity of the final explanation. Also record policy compliance: did you use only approved tools, avoid prohibited data and follow screen-sharing or recording rules?

Improvement means more than a faster first draft. A healthy pattern is that AI reduces mechanical typing while your verification time, explanation quality and ability to recover from an incorrect suggestion improve.
Adapt practice to the interview format
Live pair-coding interview
Confirm whether the assistant may be open, whether the screen must be shared and whether prompts or transcripts are retained. Practice narrating before you type, making small changes, running tests and explaining why you ignored a suggestion. If assistance is not explicitly allowed, keep the tool closed.
Take-home project
Read the assignment’s AI and attribution rules before starting. Keep a short decision log showing which code you wrote, which suggestions you considered and how you tested the result. Never claim generated work as personal experience if the instructions require disclosure.

Assume the test is independent unless the platform’s instructions explicitly authorize a tool. Browser extensions, autocomplete and external documentation can count as assistance even when they do not look like a chat assistant.
Recorded interview
Ask whether AI, transcription and recording are allowed. Pfizer and College Board specifically distinguish recorded or live evaluations from preparation, and College Board advises against third-party recording software in live interviews. Do not record an employer’s session without explicit permission.

Using AI because the policy is silent
Silence is not permission. Ask the precise question before the round and save the answer. If you cannot obtain clarification, follow the more restrictive interpretation.
Assuming one allowance applies everywhere
A company may allow AI for a take-home exercise but prohibit it in a live screen, or allow documentation lookup but not code generation. Match your practice to the named stage and feature.
Accepting a plausible but wrong solution
Stop, create a counterexample, run it and inspect the invariant. Then explain the correction. A confident tone is not evidence of correctness.

Letting AI invent your background
Do not use generated projects, metrics, employers or explanations as if they were yours. Anthropic, Pfizer, Shell and ServiceNow all emphasize truthful, authentic representation.
Practicing only with assistance
Close the tool for the final repetition. If you cannot reproduce the algorithm, complexity and tests unaided, you have memorized an output rather than learned the skill.
Exposing private information
Replace real names, credentials, customer data and proprietary code with synthetic examples. Check the tool’s retention and sharing controls before any permitted use.

Should you use an AI mock-interview service?
An AI-driven mock-interview platform can be useful for preparation; Mastercard explicitly identifies that category as acceptable preparation. Evaluate any service on the same dimensions you would use for a manual practice partner:

| Cost and access | Are the features you need available under the stated plan and in your region? |
Use such a service as a coach, not a substitute for solving problems yourself. Ubisoft’s guidance captures the principle: “Think of GenAI as a coach—not a substitute.”
Final checklist before the interview
- Read the instructions for this exact stage and identify permitted tools and features.
- Ask the recruiter or interviewer if any point is unclear; save the answer.
- Complete at least one recent unaided timed round.
- Practice narrow prompts for clarification, edge cases, debugging and explanation.
- Verify generated code with tests, complexity analysis and official documentation.
- Prepare to state what you changed and why if the tool contributes a suggestion.
- Remove confidential data and disable unapproved extensions, recording and transcription.
- Be ready to close the tool immediately if the interviewer changes the rules.
The most reliable preparation alternates independent problem solving with bounded, policy-matched AI rehearsal. That combination lets you benefit from speed without surrendering the fundamentals, verification habits and authentic communication the interview is designed to reveal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ChatGPT or another assistant in a live coding interview?
Only when the employer explicitly permits it for that specific round and identifies the allowed tools or features. If the instructions are silent, ask; do not infer permission from a take-home allowance.
Should I practice coding problems with AI or without it?
Use both modes. Solve first without assistance to establish fundamentals, then run a separate AI-allowed rehearsal with narrow prompts, verification and a final unaided repetition.
What should I do if an assistant generates code that fails?
Treat it as an untrusted draft: reproduce the failure, create a minimal counterexample, inspect the invariant and documentation, then make and explain the correction yourself.
May I record an interview so an AI can transcribe it?
Not unless the employer explicitly allows recording and transcription. Some employer guidance, including College Board’s, advises against third-party recording software in live interviews.
