To power a camera and studio lights on the road, match each device to its documented input voltage, wattage, connector, and operating mode; there is no universal battery or adapter. A USB-C PD bank may power a compatible camera, while a light may need NP-F batteries, a D-Tap cable, or a regulated 48 V battery source. Start with the exact model manuals, then test the complete setup before a shoot.
How do I plan a camera-and-light power setup?
- Inventory the equipment. Record each camera and fixture’s exact model, supported input, connector, voltage, current or wattage, and any operating restrictions in its manual.
- Decide how long and how reliably you need to run. Occasional backup, a full shooting day, and continuous operation can call for different battery capacities and redundancy.
- Choose a compatible power path for each device. Check the supply’s sustained output, the cable rating, connector and polarity, and whether the device maintains its required performance on battery power.
- Plan for the whole setup. Account for other connected loads, charging time, spare batteries, cable routing, strain relief, weather exposure, and a backup path. Secure batteries and cables so they cannot pull a camera or light stand over.
- Test the exact configuration before leaving. Run the camera and lights in the intended modes and at the planned brightness. Confirm that connectors stay secure and that the supply does not shut down or limit output.
Can I run my camera from a USB-C power bank?
Only if the camera supports USB power input and the power bank, adapter, and cable meet that model’s requirements. USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed power level or compatibility.
USB Power Delivery on supported cameras
Sony’s ILME-FX5/ILME-FX5B Help Guide specifies an external USB-PD source and USB-C cable rated for at least 27 W (9 V, 3 A). The guide says to insert a sufficiently charged battery before connecting the external source; the camera will not function if the battery’s remaining capacity is insufficient. Sony also warns that the installed battery may supplement USB power, so the external supply does not necessarily carry the entire load.
Supplying power while shooting is not the same as charging the camera battery. Sony says that the battery may not charge while the camera is on and operating from USB, and that some external supplies are not guaranteed to work. For the FX5, USB power can raise the camera’s internal temperature and shorten continuous video recording time. Check the specific camera’s manual for its menu, port, and battery requirements before relying on this setup.

When using a DC coupler
A DC coupler is a separate, model-specific power route; do not choose one merely because its connector fits. Sony’s July 9, 2026 guidance for cameras used with a DC coupler calls for at least 65 W with the DC-C1 and at least 100 W with the DC-C2. Verify the camera and coupler compatibility and the supply requirement together.
What battery do I need for a video light?
Use the fixture’s specified battery mount or input—not a battery selected only by brand or physical fit. Compact LED fixtures and higher-power COB lights can have very different voltage and output requirements.

Compact fixtures: NP-F or D-Tap
For the amaran COB 60d/x S, Aputure documents dual NP-F batteries and a D-Tap-to-DC cable as power options in its power-options guidance. This example is specific to the named fixture family; check the manual for the exact light and cable before use.
Higher-power COB fixtures: regulated 48 V
Aputure specifies a regulated 48 V supply through a 3-pin XLR battery input for the amaran 100d/x S and 200d/x S. The stated minimum capacity is at least 110 W for the 100d/x S and at least 230 W for the 200d/x S. Aputure says third-party solutions can work if they provide regulated 48 V through 3-pin XLR; the voltage, connector, and capacity still have to match. See its battery-power guidance.

Large fixtures: check output mode as well as battery mount
The Aputure LS 600d is rated for up to 720 W maximum power consumption. Its technical specifications distinguish dual V-mount or Gold-mount battery operation at half output from 48 V XLR input at full output. A battery that physically attaches is not necessarily enough to run a fixture at full output; check both the required power path and the supported operating mode.
How do I estimate runtime?
Estimate runtime from the actual load and usable battery energy, then leave a reserve. A fixture’s maximum rating is not necessarily its draw at every brightness setting, and usable energy depends on the battery’s discharge limits and the losses involved in converting voltage. Add the camera and any other equipment drawing from the same source.

The manufacturer specifications above establish device input requirements and certain operating modes, not a universal runtime. A reliable estimate needs the battery’s usable capacity, the light’s draw at the selected output, conversion losses, and concurrent loads. If any of those are unknown, test the setup under the intended conditions rather than promising a duration based on the battery’s label alone.

- Connection: connector type, polarity, and cable rating.
- Battery logistics: usable capacity, weight, charge time, spare-battery plan, and replacement availability.
- Operating performance: whether the light can reach the required output on battery power.
- Field reliability: cable security, weather suitability, and a backup power path.
A USB-C bank suited to a supported camera should not be assumed to power a high-draw studio light. Likewise, a V-mount battery is not automatically compatible with every fixture: the power conversion, voltage, and output capacity must also meet the fixture’s requirements.
