Use a LiPo with an ESP32 only through a power path documented for your exact board. A one-cell battery’s changing voltage is not automatically safe for a board’s 3.3 V input, and most development boards should not be assumed to include charging or battery protection. Check the board’s permitted power inputs first; for a custom circuit, use an appropriately specified regulator and a cell-compatible charger/protection design.

First identify the board’s permitted power input

“ESP32” names a family of chips, not a universal battery connection. Board power circuitry determines whether a LiPo can connect directly, whether the board regulates battery voltage, and whether it can charge a battery. Consult the manual and schematic for the exact model and revision before wiring anything.

ESP32-DevKitC V4: choose exactly one listed input

The ESP32-DevKitC V4 guide lists Micro USB, 5V/GND, and 3V3/GND as power options, and says to use one and only one. It warns that using more than one can damage the board or power source. A LiPo is not listed as a direct input, so do not attach one to a pin based only on its nominal voltage or combine USB with another supply unless the documentation for that exact board explicitly permits it.

Battery-capable boards use deliberate power routing

Espressif’s ESP32-S2-HMI-DevKit-1 guide describes board-specific power domains: with USB disconnected, its uncontrolled 3.3 V domain receives 3.6–4.2 V from the lithium battery; with USB connected, that domain receives 5 V. The board also has a separate 5 V domain. This is a description of that board’s design, not permission to apply those voltages to another ESP32 board.

MakerFocus 3.7V 3000mAh Lithium Polymer Rechargeable Battery for ESP32 4pcs
  • Charging Method: The recommended charging current is 0.6A, the maximum does not exceed 1.5A. The discharge current is recommended 0.6A, and the maximum does not exceed 1.5A
  • Overcharge Protection: When charging the battery, when the voltage reaches the highest battery voltage (4.2V), the protection board will automatically power off and shut down, indicating that it will not continue to charge when fully charged, forms overcharge protection
  • Over-discharge Protection: When the battery is about to run out and the voltage is as low as 3.0V, the protection board will also be turned off and can no longer be discharged, forming an over-discharge protection effect
  • Short Circuit Protection: When an accidental short circuit occurs, the protection board will automatically shut down within a few milliseconds and will not be powered on again. Note that the cell is short-circuited (not through the protection board). The protection board will also fail due to continuous high current, or the components are heated and damaged
  • Widely Application: With JST 1.25 plug, these lithium polymer batteries can be used for development board whose plug is SH1.25-2, such as ESP32 LoRa V3, ESP32 LoRa V4, Wireless Tracker, Mesh Node T114, Mesh Node T096 and electronic devices

The ESP32-S3-USB-OTG guide documents a 3.7–4.2 V single-cell battery and a boost circuit for 5 V functions. Its battery and boost arrangement is likewise specific to that design. Follow the power diagram for the board you own rather than inferring a wiring scheme from another model.

For a custom build, regulate the battery supply

For a custom ESP32 circuit, choose a power-management path that converts the cell’s changing voltage into the stable supply required by the circuit. Espressif’s ESP32 schematic checklist recommends a 3.3 V single supply with output current no less than 500 mA. Treat that as a design recommendation, not a guarantee that every board and peripheral combination needs exactly that amount: size the supply for the actual board, attached loads, and their peak demand.

A “3.3 V regulator module” or “LiPo-to-3.3 V power module” may be a useful parts-search category, but the label alone does not establish compatibility. Check the module’s input-voltage range, output-current rating, transient behavior, and how it connects to the board’s existing regulator and power path. Do not assume a regulator can charge a LiPo; regulation and cell charging are different functions.

Charging and cell protection are separate requirements

Do not assume an ordinary ESP32 development board includes a LiPo charger, battery protection, or an input designed for a cell. Those features belong to a particular board’s power circuit, not to the ESP32 chip itself. If the board’s documentation does not specify battery charging and protection, treat them as absent until verified in its schematic or component documentation.

For a custom design, select a charger and protection arrangement using the exact battery manufacturer’s limits and the charger IC or module documentation. The safe charge voltage, charge current, cutoff behavior, and wiring depend on the specific cell and charging design; there is no universal setting established for an unspecified LiPo. If you need to run the ESP32 while charging, verify that the board or power-management circuit explicitly supports that operating mode and documents how USB and battery power are handled.

Use this checklist before connecting power

  1. Identify the exact board and revision. Find its power-input section and schematic; do not rely on instructions for a different ESP32 board.
  2. Confirm the allowed input and supply combinations. Check whether the board accepts a battery directly, requires a regulated input, and permits simultaneous USB and battery power.
  3. Decide whether charging while running is required. Choose a board or power-path design that documents this behavior rather than connecting supplies together experimentally.
  4. Size the regulated output for the whole load. Use the board’s requirements and account for peripherals and peak current; Espressif’s general single-supply recommendation is 3.3 V and at least 500 mA.
  5. Check charging and protection against the exact cell. Use the cell and charger specifications for charge limits and protection; a regulator by itself does not meet these requirements.

Protect a custom circuit’s power entrance

Espressif’s schematic checklist suggests an ESD protection diode and at least 10 μF capacitance at the main power entrance, where external power enters the PCB. These are hardware-design recommendations for the entrance; they do not replace a correctly selected regulator, LiPo charger, or cell-protection design.

YELUFT 3.7V 2000mAh Lithium Polymer Rechargeable Battery for ESP32 4pcs
  • Safety and Reliability: Our product utilizes a cutting-edge, A-grade lithium battery system. Compared to others, it offers superior capacity and density, along with more stable discharge performance and an extended lifespan. Additionally, it meets the stringent UN 38.3 safety standards, ensuring both safety and reliability
  • Protection Mechanisms: When the charging voltage reaches the highest battery voltage (4.2V), the protection board will automatically power off, it will not continue to charge; when the voltage drops below 3.0V, the protection board will also turned off to prevent deep discharge of the battery. Overcharge and overdischarge can lead to the loss of cell performance and battery function
  • Prohibit Reverse Charging: Connect the positive and negative poles of the battery correctly and strictly prohibit reverse charging. If the positive and negative terminals of the battery are reversed, the battery cell cannot be charged. At the same time, reverse charging will reduce the charging and discharging performance and safety of the battery cell, and may cause heating and leakage
  • Storage: When not in use for a long time, please keep the battery voltage between 3.7V-3.9V and the storage temperature must be within the range of -20°C~45°C. The capacity for a long time storage shall be 40%~80%. We recommend charging the battery every 3 months after receiving it and storing it in a cool and dry place
  • Widely Application: With JST 1.25 plug, these 2000mAh LiPo battery can be used for ESP32 development board whose plug is SH1.25-2, Mesh Node T114 and other low-power IoT/DIY electronics requiring compact power solutions
