The official modern-console way to play the original Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is through Nintendo Switch Online. On a Nintendo Switch, use a Nintendo account with a qualifying, active membership, download the Nintendo Entertainment System classic-game application from the eShop, and launch Zelda II from its catalog. Nintendo also lists the game in connection with Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, but the exact tier, catalog and terms can vary by country.

If you already own the game on an original NES cartridge, that remains a separate hardware-preservation option. Wii U and Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console versions are legacy purchases: Nintendo ended new purchases through those eShops on March 27, 2023, although previously purchased software remains redownloadable for the foreseeable future.

What is the current way to play Zelda II?

For most players, Nintendo Switch Online is the practical answer. Nintendo’s catalog announcement identifies Zelda II: The Adventure of Link as available through Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. On Switch, the game is delivered through Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System classic-game application rather than as a separate cartridge or a standalone modern eShop purchase.

This is access through a membership, not a permanent purchase of a Switch version. Nintendo Support says active Expansion Pack members have ongoing access to supported NES classic-game libraries while the membership and Nintendo’s catalog terms remain in effect. Catalog presentation and qualifying plans can differ by country, so use the Nintendo site for your region when checking eligibility.

How to play Zelda II on Nintendo Switch

The following process follows Nintendo’s setup instructions. Menu wording can change with Switch system software, but the sequence is the same: use an eligible account, obtain the classic-games application, then open the title from its catalog.

  1. Confirm the account and membership. On the Switch user profile you intend to use, sign in to the Nintendo Account associated with an active qualifying Nintendo Switch Online membership. If the account is in a family group, verify that the membership covers that user.
  2. Open Nintendo eShop. From the Switch HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop with the user that has the membership. The eShop may display different products, plans or catalog groupings depending on your country.
  3. Find the Nintendo Entertainment System application. Search for Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System classic-game application, or locate it through the Nintendo Switch Online section. Select the application associated with the NES library rather than an unrelated retro compilation.
  4. Download the application. Choose the download option shown for your account. Nintendo’s setup flow uses the active membership to authorize the relevant classic-game library; the application itself is then installed on the console.
  5. Launch the application. Return to the HOME Menu, open the Nintendo Entertainment System application and wait for its game list to load. The first launch may require an internet connection to verify the membership and retrieve the current catalog.
  6. Select Zelda II. Choose Zelda II: The Adventure of Link from the NES catalog and start the game. If it is not visible, check the application’s list, search tools or regional catalog availability before assuming the download failed.
  7. Keep the membership active. Continued access depends on an eligible, active membership and Nintendo’s then-current catalog terms. If the membership ends or the game is removed from the supported library, the application may no longer provide playable access.

What you need before starting

  • A Nintendo Switch console with enough storage for the classic-game application.
  • A Nintendo Account linked to the user profile opening Nintendo eShop.
  • An active Nintendo Switch Online plan that qualifies for the NES library in your country.
  • An internet connection for downloading the application and for membership or catalog checks.
  • A controller compatible with your Switch model. Nintendo’s classic-game software is designed for console input, but the exact controller choices depend on the hardware you own.

If the application or game does not appear

First, close Nintendo eShop and reopen it with the correct Switch user. A membership attached to one Nintendo Account does not automatically authorize a different, unrelated account. Next, verify that the plan is still active and that the account’s country is the one you expected; Nintendo’s classic-game catalogs are not guaranteed to be identical worldwide.

If the application is installed but Zelda II is absent, update the application and check its catalog or search view. Nintendo can change which games are displayed, and an announcement covering one region does not establish identical availability in every market. Nintendo’s current support page is the authoritative place to check the exact title list and setup labels.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack?

There is no single worldwide answer based only on the plan name. Nintendo’s announcement lists Zelda II in connection with both Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo Support separately states that active Expansion Pack members have ongoing access to supported NES classic-game libraries. The plan required at checkout or in the application can therefore depend on your country, the current catalog and Nintendo’s membership rules.

Do not treat the game as a one-time Switch purchase. Before subscribing, open the Nintendo Switch Online information for your local region and confirm three details:

  • Which Nintendo Switch Online tier currently includes the NES application and Zelda II.
  • Whether access is provided for the individual account or through a family membership.
  • What happens to classic-game access when the membership expires or changes tier.

Nintendo’s regional pages also provide the current terms and any recurring charge. Because prices and plan benefits can change, a universal price or a promise that one tier works in every country would be misleading.

Modern-console routes compared

There are two realistic ways to play the original release today: the Switch subscription route and original NES hardware. Older Virtual Console releases are useful only to people who already obtained them before Nintendo closed new purchases.

Route Current official support Cost model Hardware required Access condition
Nintendo Switch Online NES application Current Nintendo-supported route; Zelda II is listed in Nintendo’s Switch Online catalog announcement. Recurring membership; local price and tier vary by country. Nintendo Switch and a compatible controller. Active qualifying membership and Nintendo’s current catalog terms.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Nintendo Support describes active Expansion Pack members as having ongoing access to supported NES classic-game libraries. Recurring Expansion Pack membership; regional terms apply. Nintendo Switch and a compatible controller. Membership must remain active; access is not a permanent individual purchase.
Original NES cartridge Legacy hardware route for the original NES release. One-time ownership if you already have the console and cartridge; resale prices were not established here. Working original NES, cartridge and suitable display or adapter setup. Depends on the physical hardware and cartridge continuing to function.
Wii U or Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console Legacy ownership only. Nintendo recorded earlier Virtual Console releases. New purchases unavailable after March 27, 2023. The relevant Wii U or Nintendo 3DS system. Previously purchased software can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future, according to Nintendo Support.

Playing from an original NES cartridge

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. If you already own an NES and a working cartridge, you can use that preservation-oriented route without a modern membership. It reproduces the original hardware context rather than Nintendo’s Switch application.

Because the condition of second-hand consoles and cartridges varies, inspect the cartridge and console before relying on them for regular play. A system that powers on may still have connector, display or controller problems. Likewise, a cartridge that looks intact may not make reliable contact. No fixed resale price or availability should be assumed; those depend on condition, region and the local retro market.

When the NES route makes sense

  • You already own the console and cartridge and want to preserve that setup.
  • You want access that is not tied to a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • You are comfortable maintaining aging hardware and finding a compatible display connection.

When it is not the easiest route

  • You do not already have the hardware and would need to source several separate components.
  • Your television does not accept the console’s output without additional equipment.
  • You want the convenience of a current digital catalog and Switch controllers.

What happened to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions?

Nintendo’s game information records earlier Wii, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console releases. Those editions should not be described as current storefront options. Nintendo states that new purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops ended on March 27, 2023.

If you bought Zelda II through one of those eShops before the closure, Nintendo’s support FAQ says previously purchased software remains redownloadable for the foreseeable future. That is a redownload right tied to prior ownership, not an invitation to buy the game now. You also need the original Wii U or Nintendo 3DS system and the account associated with the purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checking a previous purchase

  1. Turn on the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS that was used for the original purchase.
  2. Sign in with the Nintendo account or network identity associated with that purchase.
  3. Open the system’s software redownload or account purchase-history area.
  4. Look for the Virtual Console entry for Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
  5. Start the redownload if Nintendo still lists the title for that account and system.

If the title does not appear, check that you are using the original purchasing account. A different account, a transferred system or an incomplete account migration can make a legitimate purchase difficult to locate. Nintendo’s current support guidance takes priority over older screenshots or third-party lists.

Regional and account considerations

Availability is not identical in every country. Nintendo’s announcement, support pages and eShop can present different plans, prices, game lists and labels by region. A title shown on one country’s page is evidence for that market, not a guarantee for every Nintendo Account country setting.

Before changing your account region, note that region changes can affect payment methods, balances, subscriptions and access to an account’s store. The safer approach is to check the Nintendo site and eShop associated with your existing account and confirm the local catalog first.

Membership terms can also change over time. The fact that a game is available today does not promise that it will remain in the same application or under the same tier indefinitely. Keep the application updated and consult Nintendo’s current support information when a membership, console or catalog change occurs.

Controllers and play setup on Switch

The Switch application runs the NES version, so your input choice affects comfort rather than changing the underlying game. Use the controller configuration that feels most natural for directional movement and the game’s action buttons. A compatible controller is required, but the exact model depends on which Switch hardware and accessories you own.

If controls feel wrong, open the Switch’s controller settings and check that the intended controller is assigned to the user launching the application. For wireless controllers, confirm that the console recognizes the device before starting the NES software. If a button mapping or accessibility setting has been changed at the system level, restore the expected layout before troubleshooting the game itself.

Troubleshooting checklist

“I cannot download the NES application.”

  • Confirm that Nintendo eShop is open under the user with the qualifying membership.
  • Check the membership status in the local Nintendo Account settings.
  • Verify that the console is online and has available storage.
  • Restart the Switch and try the eShop download again.
  • Check Nintendo’s regional support page for service interruptions or changed requirements.

“The application opens, but Zelda II is missing.”

  • Use the application’s search or complete catalog view rather than relying on a partial recently played list.
  • Update the classic-game application from the HOME Menu.
  • Confirm the account’s country and membership tier.
  • Compare the local Nintendo catalog with the announcement you originally read; regional catalogs can differ.

“The game worked before, but now access is blocked.”

Check whether the membership expired, changed tier or belongs to a different user profile. The Switch route is subscription-based, so the software does not function as a permanent purchase when the account no longer meets Nintendo’s access conditions. If the membership is active, open the application while connected to the internet so the console can perform its current authorization and catalog check.

“My old Wii U or 3DS copy is not available.”

New purchases ended on March 27, 2023. Use the account that originally bought the title and the system’s redownload function. If the purchase history is still empty, contact Nintendo Support rather than buying from an unverified listing that claims to provide a new eShop copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which route should you choose?

Choose Nintendo Switch Online if convenience is the priority

This is the clearest option for someone who owns a Switch and wants to start playing without sourcing aging hardware. The application centralizes the NES catalog, and Nintendo maintains the current delivery method through Switch Online. The trade-off is recurring membership access and dependence on Nintendo’s catalog terms.

Choose original NES hardware if preservation is the priority

An existing NES and cartridge provide a hardware-based way to play the original release without a Switch subscription. This route is most sensible when the equipment is already in your collection and you are prepared to deal with its condition and display requirements.

Use Wii U or Nintendo 3DS only when you already own the title

Those Virtual Console editions can still matter to an existing owner because Nintendo allows previously purchased software to be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. They are not a current buying route, because new eShop purchases ended in 2023.

Bottom line for modern-console players

For a new playthrough on current hardware, open Nintendo eShop on a Switch, download Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System classic-game application with an eligible active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and launch Zelda II from the catalog. Confirm the plan and availability for your country before subscribing. An original NES cartridge remains a separate preservation option, while Wii U and Nintendo 3DS copies are limited to people who bought them before Nintendo ended new purchases on March 27, 2023.
