To play Steam games offline, prepare them while you have internet access, then select Steam > Go Offline in the Steam client. Offline Mode works only for games that can run without an active connection or an external launcher, so test each game before you rely on it offline.
Prepare Steam and your games while online
Steam needs to save your sign-in information and finish any game setup before you disconnect. Valve’s Offline Mode instructions recommend preparing the client and games first.
- Connect to the internet and open Steam. On the sign-in screen, select Remember me before signing in.
- Allow Steam and each game you plan to play to finish downloading updates.
- Launch each game once while connected. This gives it a chance to complete first-run setup, installation, or update steps. Exit the game when it is ready.
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Security. Make sure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
Switch Steam to Offline Mode
- In the main Steam window, select Steam > Go Offline.
- Confirm the change if Steam prompts you. The client will restart in Offline Mode.
- Open a prepared game from your Steam library and check that it starts without a network connection before depending on it for an extended period offline.
Steam describes the feature this way: “Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” Steam’s social and other online-dependent client features will not be available while you are offline.
Which games work offline?
Offline Mode does not make every Steam game playable without internet. A game can still require an active connection, or require an external launcher that needs to go online. Steam’s Offline Mode guidance also notes that most games need an initial connected launch.

Check the requirements for the specific game and any launcher it uses. A Steam library status such as “100% – Ready” only indicates that the download is complete; it does not guarantee offline compatibility.
What happens to Steam Cloud saves?
Steam Cloud does not synchronize saves while you play offline. When you reconnect, Steam may ask how to resolve a difference between local files and cloud files. Review the conflict before choosing which version to keep; proceeding without checking can create conflicts and risk losing data or progress. See Valve’s Steam Cloud guidance.

Return online and close Steam safely
When you finish playing, close Steam normally rather than force-quitting it or shutting down in a way that could prevent it from saving information Offline Mode needs. When internet access is available again, reconnect through Steam and let Cloud synchronization complete. If Steam displays a sync-conflict prompt, read the options carefully before selecting a copy.

Steam asks you to sign in while offline
Valve says there is no way to bypass an offline login request without going online. Reconnect, sign in with Remember me selected, verify that credential saving is allowed under Steam > Settings > Security, then switch to Offline Mode before disconnecting.

Even if Steam shows “100% – Ready,” the client or game files may need updating, or the game may require an active connection or external launcher. Reconnect to let updates finish, launch the game online once, and check the game’s connection and launcher requirements. If it depends on a live service, Steam’s Offline Mode cannot remove that requirement.
