War Robots is a third-person online PvP mech shooter on Steam. Install it from the Steam store, confirm that your Windows PC meets the listed requirements, then use the in-game controls to move, aim, fire, lock targets, and activate robot abilities. For your first matches, keep one robot’s role and weapon ranges coherent, play for beacons and cover rather than eliminations alone, and postpone optional purchases until you understand the combat loop.
What War Robots on Steam is
War Robots puts you in a customizable walking robot and sends you into team-based battles. The official description presents fully functional 6v6 multiplayer, while Steam also lists solo-oriented options such as Arena and Free-for-All. The wider game includes beacons, clans, leagues, and tournaments, so a match is about positioning and objectives as well as damage.
You choose a robot before entering a battle, equip weapons and modules, and use that machine’s movement, weapons, and ability to influence the fight. A robot can be configured around as many as three combat roles based on its class. That makes the hangar-building decision important: a fast skirmisher, close-range brawler, long-range sniper, support machine, and objective-control build all ask you to stand in different places and choose different targets.

Steam labels the game Free To Play, Online PvP, and In-App Purchases. You can download and enter the game without purchasing a physical copy or a War Robots-specific accessory. A broadband connection is recommended because battles are online.

Check your PC before installing
The Steam listing gives the following Windows specifications. They are from the listing published in 2018, so treat them as the game’s stated baseline rather than a guarantee for every future update.

Leave additional free space for Steam updates and temporary installation files. If your computer is below the minimum graphics or operating-system requirement, changing a game setting may not solve startup or performance problems.
Install War Robots through Steam
- Install or open Steam. Sign in to your Steam account and keep the client updated.
- Open the official store page. Visit War Robots on Steam and select the free-to-play installation option.
- Add it to your library. Confirm the installation prompt. Steam will place the game in your Library.
- Choose an install location. In Library, select War Robots, choose Install, pick the drive and Steam library folder, and confirm.
- Wait for the download and updates. Keep Steam open until the progress bar reports that the game is ready. An update may run immediately after the initial download.
- Launch from Library. Select War Robots and press Play. Complete any first-run setup that Steam presents.
If the game does not start, first close and reopen Steam, allow pending Steam updates to finish, and install current graphics drivers for your GPU. Verify that the selected drive has the required free space and that Windows meets the 64-bit requirement.
Complete the first launch without rushing into a match
Let the initial update finish
Do not interrupt a first launch while files are being checked or updated. Starting a match before the client has finished patching can leave you with a partial download or a second update on the next launch.
Identify your active robot and hangar
The pre-match screen asks you to choose a robot. Read its class, weapons, ability, and range before pressing the battle button. You may have several machines available, but begin by learning one clear job rather than changing equipment after every defeat.
Find the control and graphics menus
Open the in-game Settings menu before a serious match. Locate the Advanced controls area and the option named Edit combat control layout. You will use this screen to inspect aiming behavior, target priorities, damage information, and the position and size of battle controls.

Learn the core controls
The official controls guide covers the actions you need in every battle: selecting a robot, moving it, rotating the cockpit to aim, firing individual weapon slots, firing all available weapons, locking a target, and activating robot abilities such as Jump.

Use movement to reach cover, a beacon, or a useful firing angle. The exact default keyboard mapping for the Steam build is not published in the official material, so do not rely on an unverified WASD or mouse-button chart. Open the game’s control screen and press each movement input yourself. Confirm that forward, reverse, turning, and any ability movement feel natural before entering a competitive match.
Aiming the cockpit
Rotating the cockpit changes where your weapons point. Practice moving your chassis and rotating the aim independently: one action places the robot, the other keeps the weapon arcs on an enemy. Peek from cover, rotate toward the target, fire, and return behind cover while weapons reload.
Weapon slots
Some weapons should be fired individually so that you can stagger damage, preserve ammunition or cooldown timing, and avoid wasting a long-range shot on a target that is about to disappear. The fire-all command is useful when several weapons have a clear shot and the target must be pressured immediately. Test both behaviors in a low-pressure mode and learn which on-screen control corresponds to each weapon slot.
Target lock
Locking a target keeps your attention on one enemy while you move. Use it when several robots cross your view, when you need to track a fast machine, or when you are deciding whether to finish a damaged opponent. Unlock and retarget when a closer threat reaches your team or when the locked robot moves behind solid cover.

Robot abilities
Every ability has a purpose and a cooldown. Jump, for example, can change an angle or help you cross an obstacle, but using it without a plan can leave you exposed while it recharges. Read the ability description, activate it deliberately, and note how long you must wait before it is available again.

Adjust aiming and the battle interface
War Robots’ current settings guidance provides more control than a fixed default layout. Make these changes after you understand the basic inputs.
- Open Settings and enter the Advanced controls section.
- Choose between manual and automatic aiming. Automatic aiming is a reasonable starting point because it reduces the number of decisions while you learn movement; manual aiming becomes more useful when you can deliberately select a priority target.
- Set target-priority behavior separately for manual and automatic lock-on. Pick priorities that match your role: an objective player may need to notice the robot contesting a beacon, while a damage-focused build may prefer a vulnerable enemy in range.
- Enable extended damage information beside the target if you want more detail while judging whether to keep firing or switch.
- Select Edit combat control layout to reposition and resize the battle interface. Put movement, weapon, lock, and ability controls where your hands can reach them without covering the battlefield.
- Enter a low-pressure mode and test every change. Keep the setting only if you can identify targets and activate the intended control without looking away from the action.
Do not change several options between every match. Adjust one behavior, play long enough to notice its effect, and then decide whether to keep it.
Choose a coherent robot role
When comparing a robot or starter build, use the same criteria each time. The table below is a decision aid, not a permanent ranking; the game’s equipment and progression systems change, and an old community tier list can become obsolete.

Match weapon ranges to the role. A close-range ability paired with only long-range weapons creates a timing problem; a fragile sniper carrying short-range equipment forces it into the danger it was meant to avoid. Favor a build whose weapons, mobility, durability, and ability cooldown all support the same distance and job.
Play your first battles around objectives
Read the map before firing
At the start, identify nearby cover, beacon routes, and the lanes from which opponents are likely to appear. Move to a position that lets you contribute while keeping a retreat path. Standing in the open to gain a few seconds of firing time usually costs more health than it earns.
Use cover and reload windows
Peek from behind a wall or obstacle, fire when your weapons are ready, then retreat during reloads or ability cooldowns. You do not need to expose the entire robot to keep pressure on a target. If an enemy can return more damage than you can absorb, break line of sight instead of trading health until destruction.

Value beacons and team space
Eliminations matter, but a team that captures and holds objectives can win while dealing fewer total kills. Contest a beacon when your robot can survive the approach; otherwise, support the teammate already there or defend the next route. Watch the minimap and avoid sending every robot to the same lane.

Your hangar is a set of tools, not a queue of lives to spend randomly. Switch when the current robot is a poor fit for the angle, range, or objective in front of you. Preserve a durable or mobile option for a late contest instead of using every strong machine in the opening exchange.
Upgrade deliberately
Before spending scarce resources, compare the proposed upgrade with the role you actually play. Use this checklist:
- Survivability: Will additional health, resistance, or defensive utility let the robot reach and leave its position?
- Damage at the intended range: Does the weapon improve the distance where your build is designed to fight?
- Mobility: Will movement speed or an ability improvement help you take cover, rotate between beacons, or escape?
- Cooldowns: Does a shorter ability or weapon cooldown change how often you can make a meaningful play?
- Role fit: Does the item reinforce the robot’s stated job, or is it merely a higher number that encourages an awkward build?
- Future usefulness: Is the equipment likely to remain useful as your hangar develops, rather than solving one narrow early problem?
Upgrade one coherent build far enough to understand its strengths before spreading resources across unrelated weapons. Keep notes on which stat is limiting you in actual matches; if you die while rotating, mobility or durability may matter more than another damage increase.

Steam lists solo modes such as Arena and Free-for-All. These modes reduce the pressure of coordinating a full team and are useful for learning cockpit rotation, weapon timing, target lock, and ability range. Practice one skill at a time instead of treating every solo match as a test of your entire hangar.
Team battles teach a different lesson. The official game description emphasizes 6v6 play, and the broader game includes clans, leagues, and tournaments. In a team match, communicate through the available in-game tools when possible, watch which beacons are threatened, and support the robot whose position controls the next engagement. A robot that survives and keeps an objective contested can be more valuable than one that scores a single elimination and disappears.

Can you play without buying anything?
Yes. Steam distributes War Robots as a free-to-play game, and the store also identifies in-app purchases. You can install the client, choose a robot, and play online without buying a physical game copy or a required War Robots accessory. Purchases are optional; they do not replace the need to learn movement, aiming, objectives, and cooldown management.
Because the store and progression systems can change, evaluate any proposed purchase against your actual play pattern. First decide which role you enjoy, which range you can aim reliably, and which upgrade solves a repeatable problem. Buying random equipment before that decision makes your hangar harder to understand and can consume resources without improving your results.
Troubleshoot the problems beginners meet most often
The game will not launch
- Restart Steam and allow all client and game updates to complete.
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and that your processor, RAM, DirectX 11 graphics, VRAM, and storage meet the Steam listing.
- Install the latest graphics driver supplied for your GPU.
- Launch again from the Steam Library rather than an old desktop shortcut.
The download stops or an update repeats
Check the selected Steam library drive for free space beyond the stated installation size. Leave Steam open until both the download and post-download update finish. If Steam reports a storage or write error, choose a library drive with adequate free space and retry the installation.
Aiming feels uncontrollable
Return to Advanced controls, test automatic aiming, and verify target-priority behavior. If automatic aiming selects the wrong enemy, try manual lock and select targets deliberately. Resize or move the combat controls so an accidental touch does not fire or change targets while you are turning.
You lose robots immediately
Move from cover to cover, retreat during reloads, and stop taking a fight outside your weapon’s effective range. Check whether the robot’s role matches its equipment. A sniper forced into a beacon brawl or a fragile skirmisher left in an open lane will fail even when its numbers look strong.
Your team loses despite having more eliminations
Watch beacon ownership and route pressure. Rotate to an undefended objective, defend the teammate carrying a position, and save one robot for a late contest. Damage is useful only when it creates space, removes a threat, or helps your team hold the objectives that determine the match.

A practical first-session routine
- Install and update the game, then confirm that it launches normally.
- Open Advanced controls and test movement, cockpit rotation, each weapon slot, fire-all, target lock, and your robot ability.
- Choose automatic aiming for the first low-pressure match unless you already prefer manual control.
- Play one solo-oriented mode to learn weapon range and cooldown timing.
- Play a team match while prioritizing cover and one nearby objective.
