Install the free Vaultbreakers Demo from Steam, update every player’s copy, then use the demo’s in-game friend or party controls to form a group and enter a PvE mission. The current demo lets one host play with up to two friends, for a maximum documented party of three players. If someone does not appear, the first fix is to make sure everyone is running the same, fully updated demo build.
What you need before starting
Vaultbreakers co-op on Steam is currently accessed through the free Vaultbreakers Demo. The demo released on October 8, 2026 and is the playable version used for current demonstrations and playtests. You do not need to buy the unreleased full game to try co-op in the demo.
- Every participant needs a Steam account and their own installation of Vaultbreakers Demo.
- Everyone should launch the same current build. BetaDwarf specifically warns: “Make sure to update your game before playing co-op, or you won’t be able to find your friends!”
- The host can play with up to two friends. That creates a documented maximum party of three people total.
- The demo currently contains PvE missions only. The wider game description also discusses PvPvE, but that broader mode is not part of the demo’s stated feature set.
- Steam lists Xbox Controllers, DualShock Controllers (USB only), and DualSense Controllers (USB only) under partial controller support.
The full Vaultbreakers Steam listing still gives the main release date as To be announced. Instructions below therefore apply to the demo build available on Steam, not to a confirmed final-release interface.

1. Find the demo page
In the Steam client, search for Vaultbreakers Demo rather than selecting an old playtest entry or assuming that the main Vaultbreakers listing is the playable package. Open the page that identifies itself as the demo and choose the installation option.

- PLACE YOUR BID: Attempt to win a loot card by playing a high card into the central cell block or play a low card to keep it for yourself. Match the suit of the central warden card to earn a special action.
- BUILD YOUR VAULT: Stash loot cards in your vault, and arrange them wisely to maximize final scoring.
- SCORE POINTS: Earn gear tokens, the ultimate measure of success, based on the position of cards in your vault, their suit, or card patterns.
- ENDLESS VARIETY: Each game is a new challenge as scoring objectives change every time you play.

2. Install on every player’s computer
Each person joining the session must install the demo separately through their own Steam account. A player cannot join simply because the host owns or has launched the game; the participant needs the same demo installed locally.
3. Let Steam finish updates
After installation, wait for Steam to finish downloading and applying any update. Check the download queue rather than launching immediately while a patch is pending. Because friend discovery is tied to the current build, updating is a co-op requirement, not just a recommendation for new features.
4. Launch the same build
Have everyone start the demo after updates are complete. Do not mix the current demo with an earlier playtest build. If one person installed a separate test branch in the past, remove or update that installation and open the current Steam demo instead.

How to create a co-op party
1. Choose a host
One player should launch first and act as the host. The host opens the demo’s friend or party controls from the current game interface. Official descriptions confirm that these controls exist, but they do not publish a fixed button name or menu path; labels can change between builds.
2. Create the group
Use the available party control to start a group, then select the friends you want to bring into the session. If the interface presents a Steam friend list and an in-game list, use whichever option the current build exposes. Avoid relying on a remembered label from an older video or playtest because the wording is not guaranteed to remain identical.
3. Have friends accept the invitation
Invitees should watch for the Steam or in-game invitation and accept it while they are running the same demo build. If an invitation does not appear, return to the troubleshooting section below instead of repeatedly sending requests from mismatched versions.
4. Confirm the roster before launching
Check that the intended players are visible in the party display. The documented capacity is one host plus two friends. A fourth player cannot be added to that party under the demo’s stated limit, so split into separate groups if more people want to play at the same time.
5. Enter a mission together
Once the roster is ready, the host starts a PvE mission using the launch control shown by the current build. The demo’s co-op promise is mission-based play against AI enemies; do not expect the demo to place your group into the broader PvPvE experience described for the eventual game.
What co-op includes in the demo
| Item | Current demo status | What that means for your group |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution | Free digital demo on Steam | Each player installs the demo; no full-game purchase is required for this build. |
| Online play | Supported | Friends join over Steam through the demo’s friend or party controls. |
| Party size | One host plus up to two friends | The documented maximum is three players total. |
| Mission type | PvE only | Your team faces AI enemies in the current demo. |
| Broader design | PvPvE discussed for Vaultbreakers generally | Rival-player encounters are not part of the demo’s stated limitation. |
| Progression themes | Expeditions, loot, Haven progression, and escape decisions | Plan each run around gathering rewards and deciding whether to continue or leave. |
The distinction between the demo and the wider design matters. A description of rival players or mixed PvE/PvP encounters refers to the game’s broader concept, while the downloadable demo is explicitly limited to PvE. Treat the demo as a cooperative preview of the expedition loop, not as proof that every planned mode is already playable.
How to play an expedition as a team
Agree on the run’s objective
Vaultbreakers presents expeditions as a cycle of entering a mission, collecting loot, improving your Haven, and choosing whether to push farther or escape. Before launching, decide whether the group wants a cautious run focused on returning with rewards or a longer attempt that accepts more risk for additional loot. The game description establishes that continue-or-escape decision as a core part of the loop; the best choice depends on what your party is trying to accomplish in that session.
Keep decisions visible to the whole party
Co-op works better when the host does not make every route or extraction decision silently. Tell teammates when you intend to continue, when you are satisfied with the loot already secured, and when you are preparing to leave. This is coordination advice rather than a claim about a specific voice-chat or ping feature—the available interface may differ by build.

Use the party size deliberately
A three-person group has more people to coordinate than a solo run, but it also gives you additional human decision-makers while facing AI enemies. Stay clear about who is leading movement, who is checking objectives, and when the team is ready to proceed. The demo does not publish a detailed role system, so avoid assuming fixed classes or responsibilities that the current build may not use.
Track the cost of pushing farther
The expedition structure makes the continue-or-escape choice meaningful. If the group has already collected the rewards it needs, leaving protects the value of that run; if everyone agrees that more loot is worth the added danger, continue together rather than splitting up. The available description does not specify a universal optimal threshold, so treat the decision as a team risk calculation.
Fix: a friend cannot be found
Check updates first
Make this the first check for every player. Close the demo, open Steam’s download view, and confirm that no Vaultbreakers update is waiting. Apply the update, then relaunch the demo. BetaDwarf’s warning directly connects updating with friend discovery, so an outdated client is the most clearly documented cause of a missing friend.
Confirm that everyone is using the demo
Ask each player to read the title of the installed entry in Steam. Everyone should be in Vaultbreakers Demo, not an older playtest build or a different shortcut left over from an earlier test. A current host cannot reliably discover a friend who is running a mismatched package.
Restart after patching
If all players updated while the game was open, exit the demo completely and start it again. Reopen the friend or party controls after the restart, then try the invitation once more. This does not change the party limit; it simply ensures the newly installed build is the one currently running.
Check the Steam friend relationship
Verify that the intended participant is present in the host’s Steam friend list and is using the account expected for the session. If the friend is offline or signed into another account, the in-game list may not show the person you are looking for. Return both players to Steam, correct the account or status, and relaunch the demo before trying again.
Recreate the party
Disband an incomplete group and have the host create a fresh party after every client is updated. Then send a new invitation. This avoids treating an old roster as evidence that the current build cannot connect.
Stop at the documented capacity
If two friends are already in the host’s group, a further invitation is outside the demo’s documented capacity. Remove a participant before testing another account, or create a separate party for the additional players.

Look for changed labels
The official pages do not publish the exact current invitation-button wording. If a guide or video tells you to select a label that is absent, look for the demo’s current friend, party, group, or invite control instead of assuming the feature was removed. Interface text may vary by build.
Controller and keyboard choices
Steam’s feature list marks the demo with partial controller support for three categories:
| Controller category | Documented connection note | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Controllers | Listed as supported | An Xbox-style controller is the clearest documented hardware option. |
| DualShock Controllers | USB only | Use a wired USB connection; wireless support is not stated. |
| DualSense Controllers | USB only | Use a wired USB connection; wireless support is not stated. |
“Partial controller support” is not a promise that every menu, prompt, or wireless configuration behaves identically. Connect the controller before launching if you want the game to detect it from startup, and keep a mouse and keyboard nearby for any interface element that is easier to operate on the desktop. No specific controller model, price, or accessory is required by the demo.

Questions the current information can answer
Does Vaultbreakers Demo have co-op?
Yes. The Steam demo supports online co-op, and the documented arrangement is one host playing with up to two friends.
How many friends can join?
Two friends can join one host, producing a three-player group. The demo does not document a larger party.
Is the demo PvP?
No. The demo is currently described as PvE only. PvPvE is part of the broader Vaultbreakers description, not the demo’s stated mode list.

Why does updating matter so much?
The official announcement explicitly says that players who do not update will be unable to find their friends. Bring every client to the same current build before creating the party.
Can I use an Xbox controller?
Yes. Xbox Controllers are listed in Steam’s partial controller-support features. DualShock and DualSense devices are also listed, with USB-only notes.
What if the invite button has a different name?
Use the current build’s friend or party control. The official pages confirm the function but do not guarantee a permanent label, so menu wording may change.
Where to follow changes
The official Vaultbreakers site directs interested players toward Steam wishlisting, the game’s Discord community, and a Notion page for upcoming playtests. Those channels are the appropriate places to watch for build changes, revised party limits, or updated instructions as development continues.

- Install Vaultbreakers Demo from Steam on every computer.
- Wait for all downloads and updates to finish.
- Launch the same current demo build on every account.
- Choose one host and open the demo’s current friend or party controls.
- Create the group and invite no more than two friends.
- Have each invitee accept while running the updated demo.
- Confirm the roster before starting.
- Enter a PvE mission and agree on how aggressively to pursue loot.
- When the team has enough value—or decides the risk is too high—use the mission’s escape decision together.
Following that order addresses the only explicitly documented discovery requirement, keeps the party within the current limit, and sets the right expectation for the demo’s PvE-only content.
