Yes—you can play Toy Story 3 on PS5. The current release is Disney/Pixar Toy Story 3 Complete Edition, a native PS5/PS4 title released on October 15, 2026. It supports offline play, one or two players, local co-op, Remote Play, and DualSense wireless-controller vibration. The PlayStation Store is the confirmed purchase route. If your PS5 asks for an update, install the latest system software before launching.
This guide explains which mode to choose, how local co-op works, what the PS5 controls do and do not document, how Story Mode is structured, and how to use Woody, Buzz and Jessie when a level seems blocked.
What you need to play Toy Story 3 on PS5
Use the Toy Story 3 Complete Edition listing for PS5 or PS4. The release supports offline play, so a persistent internet connection is not required after the game is installed. The store listing also identifies support for one to two players, Remote Play and DualSense vibration.

- A DualSense wireless controller for the native PS5 version.
- A second compatible controller if two people are playing locally.
- Current PS5 system software if the console requests an update.
The available evidence confirms local play and Remote Play, but it does not advertise an online multiplayer mode. Treat co-op as couch play on the same console rather than assuming that a friend can join over the internet.

How to start the game
- Install Toy Story 3 Complete Edition from the PlayStation Store and allow any game update to finish.
- Pair and turn on the DualSense controller you will use for the first player.
- Launch the game from the PS5 home screen. If the console reports that system software is out of date, update the PS5 and restart the game.
- At the mode-selection screen, choose Story Mode for the linear campaign or Toy Box Mode for open-ended missions and town building.
- For local co-op, connect the second controller before choosing the co-op option. Have the second player join when the game displays its on-screen prompt.
The game’s own prompts and pause/options menu are the authority for current button assignments. The PS5 product pages confirm DualSense support, but they do not publish a complete button-by-button chart.
Story Mode or Toy Box Mode?
The two modes serve different purposes. Story Mode is a finite, movie-inspired campaign with a beginning, middle and end. Toy Box Mode is a customizable western town in which you accept quests, earn gold and experiment with buildings, costumes, vehicles and characters.
| Mode | What you do | Best starting point for | Players |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story Mode | Play selected scenes inspired by the film, solve level challenges and switch among Woody, Buzz and Jessie. | Learning each character’s abilities and following a directed route. | One or two players locally. |
| Toy Box Mode | Take resident quests, earn gold, build and decorate the western town, customize residents and drive vehicles. | Free-form objectives, experimentation and personalization. | One or two players locally. |
A practical order is to complete enough Story Mode to understand the three characters, then move to Toy Box Mode when you want less linear play. You can also start in Toy Box Mode immediately if customization is your priority; the modes are separate ways to play rather than two halves of one required sequence.
How Story Mode works
It adapts key movie moments, not every scene
Story Mode revisits selected set pieces from Toy Story 3. The PlayStation listing identifies the train rescue, Operation Playtime, the junkyard, Andy’s room and Sunnyside Daycare. These are playable interpretations of movie moments, not a scene-for-scene recreation of the entire film.
Pixar story editor Jason Katz explained in a 2010 PlayStation Blog Q&A that the game has its own beginning, middle and end and follows the movie, but that the film’s final scene is not necessarily the game’s final scene. Expect the campaign to use the film as its framework while arranging events for interactive challenges.

Switch characters when a route stops making sense
Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie are not interchangeable attackers. Each has abilities intended for particular level challenges. Woody can swing with his pull string, while Buzz can use his strength to throw toys long distances. Jessie has her own role in the challenge design.
When a door, gap, platform or objective appears impossible, do not assume that you need to defeat more enemies. Look for the character-switch prompt and test the ability associated with the obstacle. A route that is inaccessible to Woody may be designed for Buzz or Jessie.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse prompts as progression markers
Character-specific prompts are more than tutorial reminders: they indicate the intended progression path. Read the prompt, switch to the named character and perform the displayed action. If the prompt disappears, return to the last area where the objective was updated rather than repeatedly attacking the same object.
Story Mode tips for common situations
When an objective seems stuck
- Pause and read the current objective rather than relying on memory of the movie.
- Scan nearby platforms, interactable objects and character-switch points.
- Cycle through Woody, Buzz and Jessie and look for a prompt that appears only for one of them.
- Try the ability shown by the prompt, then follow the newly opened route before searching elsewhere.
When you keep missing a jump or swing
Check the on-screen movement and action instructions first. The PS5 mapping may differ from older versions, and a double-jump, swing or interaction can require a specific timing window. Make sure you are using the character intended for that section; repeating the same jump with the wrong character wastes attempts.
When the level feels unlike the film
That is expected. Story Mode borrows locations and events, but it is designed as a game with traversal, combat and character abilities. The train rescue, junkyard and Sunnyside sections may be rearranged or expanded to support play.

Toy Box Mode explained
Toy Box Mode takes place in a customizable version of Woody’s Roundup western town. Residents issue quests, and completing those quests awards gold. You spend that gold on personalizing the town rather than simply moving from one cinematic scene to the next.
What you can customize
- Build and decorate town buildings.
- Change the appearance of townsfolk, including their clothing.
- Play as Woody, Buzz or Jessie while exploring and completing objectives.
- Use vehicles and experiment with the town’s open-ended activities.
The Complete Edition adds Emperor Zurg to Toy Box Mode and includes four additional theme packs. It also brings upgraded graphics, resolution and framerate compared with the earlier release.
A useful Toy Box routine
- Speak with residents and note every available quest.
- Complete the shortest or most clearly explained objective first to build up gold.
- Spend earnings on the building or decoration that supports the type of town you want.
- Change costumes and characters, then revisit the town to test how the new setup feels.
- Use vehicles and optional objectives after you understand the basic quest loop.
Toy Box Mode has no requirement to follow the movie’s order. If you prefer a clear narrative, return to Story Mode; if you want to build, dress characters and experiment, stay in the Toy Box.
How local two-player co-op works
Two people can play locally in both Story Mode and Toy Box Mode. The store listing describes offline one-to-two-player support, and the game’s earlier developer Q&A describes cooperative play and team-based moves.
Joining a second player
- Turn on and connect the second controller to the same PS5.
- Start the game with the first controller.
- Choose Story Mode or Toy Box Mode.
- Select the local co-op option when it appears, then have the second player press the join button shown on screen.
If the join prompt does not appear, return to the mode-selection screen with both controllers active and select the co-op option before loading a level. The release does not advertise online co-op, so do not look for an invite-only multiplayer menu when both players are sitting at the same console.

Coordinate abilities instead of duplicating attacks
Co-op is most effective when each player watches for the ability a challenge requires. One player may need to use Woody’s pull-string swing while the other handles Buzz’s strength-based throw, or a partner may need to switch to Jessie for a different interaction. Treat the two characters as a team with complementary tools, not as identical damage dealers.
In Toy Box Mode, co-op partners can divide tasks: one player can pursue a resident’s quest while the other explores, drives a vehicle or works on customization. Agree on the current objective before splitting up so that neither player waits at an unrelated activity.
PS5 controls: what is confirmed and what is not
The Complete Edition supports DualSense vibration, but the official PS5 pages do not provide a definitive button chart. Because the current mapping is not published there, use the prompts shown during play and the pause/options menu as the authoritative reference. A control scheme from the older PSP/PS2 release can help you recognize familiar actions, but it must not be treated as the PS5 layout.
| Action | Legacy PSP/PS2 reference | How to treat it on PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Move | Left stick | Orientation only; verify in the current in-game menu. |
| Look | Right stick | Orientation only; verify in the current in-game menu. |
| Jump | Cross; the reference also lists a double-jump in midair | Use the prompt and test the timing in a safe area. |
| Action or interact | Circle | Do not assume the same face button on PS5. |
| Melee attack | Square | Do not assume the same face button on PS5. |
| Buzz’s laser during Buzz Adventures | Triangle | Applicable only as a legacy reference; check the current prompt. |
| Duck in Woody’s Roundup | D-pad down | Check the current mode’s control display. |
| Hint | D-pad up | Use the in-game hint instruction rather than relying on the older chart. |
| Information, objectives and trophies | Select | The PS5 equivalent is not established by the published control reference. |
| Pause | Start | Use the current pause instruction shown by the game. |
The important distinction is between a remembered legacy layout and a verified Complete Edition mapping. If a button does not produce the expected result, open the options menu and follow the displayed control labels instead of changing system-wide controller settings.

Using DualSense and Remote Play
The native PS5 release supports DualSense wireless-controller vibration. Vibration support confirms that the controller is recognized as a supported PS5 device, but it does not reveal the face-button assignments; those remain an in-game documentation matter.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Remote Play is listed as supported. Remote Play streams the PS5 session to a compatible device, so the same mode and local-player limits still apply: the game remains a one-to-two-player title, and the cited listings do not describe online co-op through Remote Play.
Troubleshooting checklist
The PS5 will not launch the game
- Check that the Complete Edition is installed rather than an unrelated older release.
- Install the latest PS5 system software if the console displays an update requirement.
- Finish any game update and restart the application.
The second controller cannot join
- Confirm that the second controller is paired to the same PS5 user session or is available as a guest.
- Connect it before selecting the co-op option.
- Return to the mode-selection screen and choose local co-op again if the join prompt was skipped.
- Remember that the documented feature is local two-player play, not an advertised online lobby.
You cannot find a button in the control guide
The Complete Edition’s exact button chart is not published in the cited official pages. Open the pause/options menu and follow the current labels. The PSP/PS2 chart is useful only for recognizing concepts such as jump, action, attack and hint.
A Story Mode path is blocked
- Read the objective again.
- Search for a character-switch point.
- Try Woody’s pull-string swing, Buzz’s long-distance throw or Jessie’s relevant ability when prompted.
- Follow the newly opened route instead of repeating attacks with the current character.
Recommended way to play
For a first session, begin with Story Mode and play until you have encountered the character-specific prompts for Woody, Buzz and Jessie. This teaches the abilities that later make Toy Box objectives easier to interpret. Move to Toy Box Mode when you want to earn gold, customize the western town, use vehicles or explore the Complete Edition’s Zurg and theme-pack content.
