Play the core saga in the order the games originally launched: Metal Gear (1987), Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990), Metal Gear Solid (1998), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001), Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008), Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010), Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014), and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015). This sequence preserves the series’ intended introduction of mechanics, themes, and major story reveals.
For most newcomers, METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 is the simplest starting purchase because it includes the first five releases in that route, along with historical and reading material. The later games require additional releases or hardware, so plan the entire route before you begin.

The recommended release-order route
The list below treats the two MSX2 games as the beginning of the main continuity, then follows the modern numbered and story-critical entries. Dates are the games’ first release years, not the dates of later ports, remasters, or remakes.

Why release order works best for a first playthrough
Metal Gear Solid 3 is first in the fictional timeline, but it was designed as a prequel for players who already knew the series’ vocabulary. Starting there can reveal the significance of names, organizations, and historical events that later games expect you to recognize gradually. The same issue occurs if you begin with Peace Walker or The Phantom Pain: both assume context from earlier releases even when their scenes occur decades earlier.
Release order also preserves mechanical progression. The original games establish overhead stealth, MGS translates that language into 3D, MGS2 expands enemy awareness and environmental interaction, and MGS3 adds survival systems. The later titles build on that foundation with larger areas, recruitment, and open-ended missions. Learning in that sequence makes each change understandable instead of treating older controls as a regression.
What to expect from every mainline game
1. Metal Gear (1987)
The MSX2 original is a compact, overhead stealth game. Your objective is generally to infiltrate, gather information, rescue personnel, and disable threats while avoiding unnecessary combat. Limited equipment and strict alert states make route planning more important than reflexes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExpect dated interface conventions and occasional trial-and-error. Use a guide only when a progression block is genuinely opaque; discovering the basic patrol patterns yourself shows why later games keep referring back to this foundation. The version included in MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 is a practical way to play it without locating original MSX2 hardware.
2. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990)
This direct sequel refines the first game’s stealth model with more deliberate enemy behavior, sound and movement considerations, and a denser story. It is still a 2D game, but its systems anticipate the 3D design of Metal Gear Solid.
Play it immediately after the 1987 title while its characters and terminology are fresh. If you find the pacing slow, focus on completing the infiltration objectives and reading the supplied manuals or master book rather than attempting every optional detour.
3. Metal Gear Solid (1998)
The PlayStation entry is the ideal narrative gateway to the modern saga. Its camera, codec conversations, boss encounters, and cinematic presentation establish the tone that later games repeatedly reinterpret.
Do not skip briefings or codec calls on a first run; they explain controls, objectives, and political context that the mission screens do not repeat. Save in multiple slots before major operations so you can retry a boss or an optional conversation without replaying an entire act.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Bonus: Gold Camouflage. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version) Bonus: GOLD Uniform.
4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)
MGS2 deliberately changes perspective and withholds information. Those choices are part of its design, so avoid searching for explanations while playing the opening chapters. The game assumes you remember the events and vocabulary of MGS, making it much more effective as the fourth step than as a starting point.
Its PlayStation 2-era controls can feel stiff on a modern controller. Use the collection’s control options if available, but keep the original pressure-sensitive weapon behavior in mind when a button appears to have several functions.
5. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)
Set in 1964, MGS3 introduces camouflage, stamina, food, injuries, and a different approach to boss design. These systems reward observation: choose camouflage that fits the surroundings, manage stamina before long movements, and treat healing items as a resource rather than an emergency button.

Its prequel status is precisely why it belongs here for a first playthrough. Earlier games establish the identities and ideologies that make MGS3‘s historical revelations meaningful.
6. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008)
MGS4 is the next numbered sequel and the conclusion of Solid Snake’s central arc. It revisits characters and plot threads from the preceding games, so playing it without the first four entries produces a summary of emotional payoffs rather than the intended buildup.
Plan for a heavily cinematic game with long transitions between operations. Keep your console firmware and controller charged, and allow uninterrupted time for its extended finale. It was first released on PlayStation 3; later collection availability is addressed below.
7. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010)
Originally a PSP release, Peace Walker follows Big Boss after the events of MGS3 and expands the series with base management, recruitment, research, and mission-based progression. Its structure can feel closer to a portable action game than to a single continuous console campaign.

8. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014)
Ground Zeroes is the prologue to The Phantom Pain, not a separate fifth installment to place elsewhere. Its main operation is short, but side missions teach the marking, extraction, and open-area systems that carry into the next game.
Play the main mission first, then sample side operations if you want to practice. Carrying forward knowledge of enemy marking and helicopter extraction will make the opening hours of The Phantom Pain less overwhelming.
9. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)
The fifth full installment opens the series into large, replayable environments. You can approach objectives through stealth, diversion, long-range observation, or carefully managed combat. Recruiting personnel and developing equipment at your base creates a strategic layer that did not exist in the earlier games.

Where to play the first five releases today
Konami’s METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 contains Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It also includes bonus games, digital graphic novels, screenplay books, master books, and a digital soundtrack. Konami lists support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Steam.
That makes Vol. 1 the clearest single purchase for steps one through five. Storefront listings, language options, patches, and prices vary by region, so check the store attached to your platform before buying. Konami’s October 24, 2023 announcement also identified Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Metal Gear Solid 3 as standalone digital titles; those listings can change independently of the collection.
Konami describes the collection as “The origin of stealth action returns.”

How to finish the route after Vol. 1
The remaining games are not all available in one consistently supported package on every system. Use this checklist when planning your platform:
Rank #4
- Play at home and on the go
- An ideal gift idea for a loved one
- Game is simple to understand and quick to play
- PlayStation: Vol. 1 covers the first five steps on PS4 and PS5. MGS4 was originally a PS3 game, so confirm whether a current listing or streaming option is available in your region before assuming it runs natively on PS5.
- Xbox: Vol. 1 is listed for Xbox Series X|S. The original Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain releases were on Xbox 360 and Xbox One; verify backward-compatibility and store status for the console you own.
- Switch: Vol. 1 is listed for Nintendo Switch. Performance, control options, and download requirements are edition-specific, so read the local listing rather than assuming parity with other platforms.
- PC: Vol. 1 is listed for PC and Steam. Check the current system requirements, controller support, and whether each component is sold as a bundle or separately.
A TechRadar report says Konami announced MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 2 for August 27, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. The announced contents are Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. Because the date and local storefront status are time-sensitive, verify the listing in your country before treating Vol. 2 as available. Ghost Babel is an additional title, not a replacement for the release-order route.
Release order versus chronological order
Chronological order is useful on a replay, after you understand the series’ habit of telling its history through flashbacks and prequels. The story-time sequence is:
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (1964)
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
- Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
- Metal Gear
- Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
- Metal Gear Solid
- Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Chronological play foregrounds the rise and transformation of Big Boss before you meet Solid Snake’s era. It also removes the contrast between older and newer mechanics, because you move from the most modern open-area design backward to the 1987 overhead game. Choose it when you want a historical timeline, not when you want the series’ original dramatic pacing.

Do you need the old MSX2 games?
You can understand the broad plot of the later games without completing the MSX2 titles, but skipping them removes the direct context for several characters, conflicts, and design ideas. They are short compared with the modern entries and are included in Vol. 1, so first-time players should try them.
If the interface or difficulty becomes a barrier, read the collection’s master book or screenplay material after attempting each game, then continue to Metal Gear Solid. Treat that as a deliberate accessibility choice, not as a requirement to force yourself through every opaque puzzle.
Optional side entries
Konami’s archive also lists several games that are not necessary steps in the numbered release-order path:
- Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (2006): A PSP side entry connected to the broader continuity. Play it after MGS3 if you want more of that era, or leave it until after the main route.
- Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2013): An action-focused spin-off set after the main Solid Snake storyline. Its faster combat and different emphasis make it optional for understanding the principal saga.
- Metal Gear Survive (2018): A spin-off with survival mechanics. It is not required to follow the main narrative and can be treated as a separate experiment.
Play these only after the relevant mainline games. Starting with a spin-off can give you the wrong expectation about stealth, pacing, or story importance.

Remakes, rereleases, and version choices
A remake or rerelease carries its own launch date and may alter controls, graphics, voice work, or quality-of-life features. For a first playthrough, use the original release sequence even when you choose a newer edition. A remake of an earlier game does not become a new chronological step, and a remastered collection does not change the year in which the original story was introduced.

- The origin of stealth action returns. METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 unifies the beginning of the METAL GEAR gameplay experience in one single package. Infiltrate enemy fortresses all over the globe, complete your missions with stealth and experience the thrilling cinematic story of the METAL GEAR series.
When two editions are available, compare these practical points:
- Whether the original game is included rather than only a remake or expanded edition.
- Save compatibility and controller options on your platform.
- Included manuals, graphic novels, screenplays, and master books.
- Display format, subtitle languages, and audio options for your region.
- Whether the title is sold separately or only as part of a collection.
A low-friction playthrough plan
- Start with Vol. 1: Install the collection on your supported platform and play the two MSX2 games before the three PlayStation-era entries.
- Keep separate save files: Use at least one rotating save for each game and a second save before boss encounters or irreversible mission choices.
- Read in-game briefings: Codec calls, manuals, and collection books often explain controls that are not obvious from modern tutorials.
- Allow a break after MGS3: The move to MGS4 changes pacing and presentation substantially; a short pause can prevent fatigue during the long central arc.
- Play Peace Walker before Ground Zeroes: Its base-management and mission systems provide useful context for the fifth game’s opening.
- Use Ground Zeroes as training: Practice marking enemies, extracting targets, and calling support before beginning The Phantom Pain.
- Reserve optional entries for afterward: Once the principal saga is complete, choose Portable Ops, Rising, or Survive according to whether you want more story, action, or survival gameplay.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Starting with MGS3 because it is first chronologically
This is the most common ordering error. The prequel contains historical information whose dramatic weight depends on the earlier releases. Use chronological order for a replay instead.
Skipping MGS2 because its protagonist changes
The change is intentional and central to the game’s themes. Skipping it removes the setup needed for later references and makes MGS4 harder to follow.
Treating Ground Zeroes as optional
It is shorter than the other entries, but it establishes the immediate situation and mechanics for The Phantom Pain. Play its main operation before the fifth game.
Assuming every collection includes every sequel
Vol. 1 stops after MGS3. Confirm the contents of any Vol. 2 or standalone listing in your region, especially for MGS4 and Peace Walker.
Expecting identical controls across eras
The MSX2, PlayStation, PSP, and open-area games use different movement, aiming, and alert systems. Read the control screen for each title and adjust your expectations instead of judging an older game by a newer game’s interface.
The shortest correct answer
For a first playthrough, follow this exact sequence: Metal Gear → Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake → Metal Gear Solid → Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty → Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater → Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots → Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker → Ground Zeroes → The Phantom Pain. Start with MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 where supported, then verify current regional listings for the remaining games. Save chronological order and the optional spin-offs for after you have experienced the main release sequence.
