This is the numbered mainline sequence presented by Square Enix. It is not a complete list of every FINAL FANTASY release: the franchise also includes non-numbered games and other media.
Do you need to play them in order?
No. Square Enix describes almost every mainline game as a standalone adventure with its own world, characters, and gameplay mechanics. Release order is a good choice if you want to see how the series changes over time, but you can also start with an individual game that interests you. The “almost every” qualification matters: do not assume every entry is wholly unrelated to the others.
Why older release lists can look different by region
Historical Western titles do not always match the numbered names used today. Square Enix’s North American history records FINAL FANTASY IV as FINAL FANTASY II in North America, and FINAL FANTASY VI as FINAL FANTASY III. It also notes that FINAL FANTASY II appeared there as part of FINAL FANTASY ORIGINS. As a result, a list of historical North American releases may not read like a simple I-to-XVI sequence. For the mainline play order above, use the current numbered titles; for a specific launch date, identify the territory because regional release labels and dates differ.
