There is no single franchise-wide story order for Fire Emblem: most games take place in separate worlds. For a first playthrough, use Japanese release order to see the series evolve. For continuity, follow one of the connected arcs—Archanea and Valentia, Jugdral, Elibe, or Tellius—or start with a self-contained game such as Three Houses or Engage.

The short answer: which order should you use?

Choose your order based on what you want from the series:

  • New to Fire Emblem: Start with Three Houses for a self-contained world and several optional routes, or Engage for a more direct, map-focused modern structure.
  • Want to watch the series change over time: Play the mainline games in Japanese release order. This shows how the tactical systems, presentation and narrative formats developed from 1990 through 2023.
  • Want Marth’s complete connected story: Play Shadow Dragon, then Echoes: Shadows of Valentia as the Valentian branch, and finish with New Mystery of the Emblem where you can access it.
  • Want the clearest direct-sequel pair: Play Path of Radiance, followed by Radiant Dawn.
  • Want the most important prequel relationship: Play The Blazing Blade (the international game titled Fire Emblem), then The Binding Blade.
  • Want a generational saga: Play Genealogy of the Holy War, insert Thracia 776 during its timeline gap, then complete Genealogy‘s second generation.

You do not need any older title before beginning Three Houses or Engage. Their settings are designed to stand on their own.

Fire Emblem games in Japanese release order

This is the chronological order in which the mainline games first launched in Japan. It is the safest order if you want historical context, because remakes and international naming differences can otherwise make the timeline confusing.

# Game First release Platform What to know
1 Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light 1990 Famicom The original Marth and Archanea campaign.
2 Fire Emblem Gaiden 1992 Famicom A related Valentian story in the same broad setting.
3 Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem 1994 Super Famicom Continues Marth’s Archanean story.
4 Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War 1996 Super Famicom A two-generation tale set in Jugdral.
5 Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 1999 Super Famicom Takes place inside the timeline of Genealogy.
6 Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade 2002 Game Boy Advance (Japan) Roy’s story; it is set after The Blazing Blade.
7 Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade 2003 Game Boy Advance Released internationally as Fire Emblem; a prequel to The Binding Blade.
8 Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones 2004 Game Boy Advance A self-contained setting.
9 Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance 2005 GameCube The first half of the Tellius story.
10 Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn 2007 Wii Direct sequel to Path of Radiance, set three years later.
11 Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon 2008 Nintendo DS A remake of the 1990 Marth game.
12 Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem 2010 Nintendo DS A remake/expanded version of the later Archanea campaign; released only in Japan.
13 Fire Emblem Awakening 2012 Nintendo 3DS Set in a distant future of the Archanea world, called Ylisse.
14 Fire Emblem Fates 2015 Nintendo 3DS Birthright, Conquest and Revelation are alternate routes, not sequential games.
15 Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia 2017 Nintendo 3DS A remake of Gaiden.
16 Fire Emblem: Three Houses 2019 Nintendo Switch A self-contained Fódlan setting with multiple house routes.
17 Fire Emblem Engage 2023 Nintendo Switch A self-contained Elyos story that uses legacy characters as Emblems.

The dates above are first Japanese releases. International launch dates can differ, and several early games or remakes have never received a broad release outside Japan. Nintendo’s published series history confirms the later platform releases, including Shadow Dragon (2008), New Mystery (2010), Awakening (2012), Fates (2015), Echoes (2017) and Three Houses (2019).

Is there one chronological Fire Emblem timeline?

No. Fire Emblem is an anthology. Shared names, recurring archetypes and crossover references do not make every game part of one continuous history. Only certain groups share a world or a direct narrative connection.

Release order and story order therefore answer different questions. Release order tells you when Nintendo introduced each design idea. Story order tells you when events occur inside a particular setting. A remake normally replaces the need to play its older original unless you specifically want to compare versions.

Story order by connected world

Archanea and Valentia: Marth, Alm and Awakening’s distant future

  1. Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light or Shadow Dragon (DS remake): Begin with Marth’s Archanean campaign. The DS remake is the practical alternative to the 1990 Famicom original.
  2. Gaiden or Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (3DS remake): This is the Valentian branch of the shared setting and follows the first Archanean war.
  3. Mystery of the Emblem or New Mystery of the Emblem: Continue with the later Archanean crisis. New Mystery was released only in Japan, so the original is also a historical option for players who can access it.
  4. Awakening: Its Ylisse setting is a distant future of the same world, separated from the earlier Marth stories by roughly two thousand years. You can understand Awakening without the older games, but prior knowledge adds context to its historical references.

The opening history explains why the sequence is not simply “Marth game one, then Marth game two.” The Shadow Dragon manual says, “A century later, Medeus was reborn,” describing the return of the central threat after Anri’s victory and Akaneia’s rebuilding. That history leads into Marth’s story, while the later games move through separate eras of the same world.

Jugdral: the generational order

  1. Genealogy of the Holy War, first generation.
  2. Thracia 776. Its events occur during the gap between the two generations of Genealogy.
  3. Genealogy of the Holy War, second generation.

Because Thracia 776 occupies an interval inside Genealogy, it is not a conventional sequel that should be played after the entire game. In practice, many players finish Genealogy first because the older title is difficult to obtain and its two-generation structure is easier to follow uninterrupted. If you can play both in timeline order, stop between Genealogy‘s generations for Thracia 776.

Elibe: the prequel that released second

  1. The Blazing Blade (internationally titled Fire Emblem). This is the earlier Elibe story.
  2. The Binding Blade. Roy’s campaign follows later in the same world.

This is the clearest case where release order and story order diverge. Japan received The Binding Blade in 2002, then The Blazing Blade in 2003. Play the latter first if you want the narrative chronology; play the former first if you are following historical release order.

Tellius: the direct sequel pair

  1. Path of Radiance.
  2. Radiant Dawn. Set three years later and continuing the same conflict and characters.

Unlike most entries, these games are designed as a straightforward two-part story. Starting with Radiant Dawn means encountering returning characters and political changes without the setup provided by Path of Radiance, so this is the one pair for which story order is especially important.

Fates: one premise, three alternate routes

Fire Emblem Fates offers Birthright, Conquest and Revelation. They are branching outcomes from a shared premise, not three chapters that must be played in chronological sequence. Choose one route first. The other routes are optional alternate perspectives and comparisons of the same setting.

Fódlan: choose a house in Three Houses

Three Houses is self-contained. At the beginning, choose a house; each route explores a different interpretation of Fódlan’s conflict. Additional routes can be played later, but none is a prequel required to understand another Fire Emblem title.

Elyos: Engage stands alone

Engage is set in Elyos and uses heroes from earlier games as Emblems. Those appearances are a celebration of series history, not evidence of a shared plot. In a Nintendo developer interview, the team explicitly said: “No, this is a brand-new title with no story connection to any of the previous games from the Fire Emblem series.” Nintendo’s product description presents Alear’s quest to gather 12 Emblem Rings, but you do not need to know the featured characters’ original games to follow it.

How to choose a starting game

Start with Three Houses if you want character and political context

Choose Three Houses when you want one setting with multiple house perspectives. You can complete one route and stop, or return for the others after you understand the central conflict. No Archanea, Elibe or Tellius knowledge is assumed.

Start with Engage if you want a focused standalone campaign

Engage is the simplest modern entry for a player who wants to concentrate on battles and a single new setting. Its Emblem characters reference the wider franchise, but the Elyos plot does not continue any earlier story.

Start with Shadow Dragon if Marth is your priority

The DS Shadow Dragon remake is the most accessible route into Marth’s story when compared with the original Famicom release. Follow it with Echoes to see the connected Valentian branch, then seek out New Mystery if you want the later Archanean campaign and can access its Japan-only release.

Start with The Blazing Blade if you want the Elibe relationship

The international release called Fire Emblem introduces the events that lead to Roy’s story in The Binding Blade. This order preserves the narrative setup even though it does not match the Japanese launch dates.

Originals, remakes and alternate versions

Several entries in the release list are remakes rather than new points in the fictional chronology. Treat the original and remake as alternative ways to experience the same core story unless you are studying design changes.

Original Remake or related version How to use it in a playthrough
Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light (1990) Shadow Dragon (2008, Nintendo DS) Play either one for Marth’s opening campaign; the DS version is the practical modern substitute where available.
Gaiden (1992) Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (2017, Nintendo 3DS) Play either one for the Valentian story; Echoes is the remake option.
Mystery of the Emblem (1994) New Mystery of the Emblem (2010, Nintendo DS) Use either for the later Archanean campaign, noting that New Mystery was Japan-only.
The Blazing Blade International title Fire Emblem These are the same 2003 Game Boy Advance game, not two separate entries.

Availability and platform cautions

The early release list is a historical record, not a promise that every game is currently sold or playable on modern hardware. The first three games launched on Famicom or Super Famicom, and several later entries were Japan-only. New Mystery of the Emblem is specifically a Japan-only Nintendo DS release. Check your region’s legal storefronts, original hardware options and language support before committing to a complete release-order run.

Platform labels also prevent a common mistake: the 1990 Famicom game and the 2008 Nintendo DS game both involve Marth but are not the same release; Gaiden and Echoes similarly represent an original and its remake. If a guide lists “Shadow Dragon” without a year or platform, verify which version it means.

Common order mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Treating every game as one saga: Separate the connected worlds first. Three Houses and Engage require no earlier story.
  • Playing Binding Blade before Blazing Blade for chronology: The 2002 release came first, but the 2003 Blazing Blade story comes first.
  • Starting with Radiant Dawn: It is the second Tellius game. Play Path of Radiance first when possible.
  • Playing all Fates routes as if they were chapters: Pick one route, then treat the others as alternate outcomes.
  • Assuming Engage is a sequel: Its Emblems are legacy characters; Nintendo describes the Elyos game as having no story connection to previous entries.
  • Confusing remakes with additional sequels: Shadow Dragon and Echoes replace their originals for most players rather than adding new chronological episodes.

A practical checklist

  1. Decide whether your priority is release history, one connected world or a modern standalone game.
  2. If you choose release history, follow the 1990–2023 table and note each platform and remake.
  3. If you choose continuity, select one arc: Archanea/Valentia, Jugdral, Elibe or Tellius.
  4. For Fates or Three Houses, choose one route first; replaying other routes is optional.
  5. Confirm regional availability and language support for Japan-only or older hardware releases.
  6. Use a remake when you want the same story in a newer version, and return to the original only if comparing historical design.

Final recommendation

For most newcomers, begin with Three Houses or Engage and move to an older connected arc only if its setting interests you. For a complete historical tour, use Japanese release order. For story continuity, remember the four key sequences: Archanea and Valentia, Genealogy with Thracia, Blazing Blade before Binding Blade, and Path of Radiance before Radiant Dawn.
