Play the main campaign of Resident Evil 7 biohazard before watching Chandler Riggs’s reported fan short BIOHAZARD. The approximately 20-minute film is described as an adaptation of Ethan Winters’s struggle with Jack Baker, so the campaign is what gives you the characters, Louisiana plantation setting, and stakes that the short assumes. The downloadable chapters are optional context, not prerequisites.
The short answer: finish the main campaign first
The minimum preparation is one complete playthrough of Resident Evil 7 biohazard’s main story. You play Ethan Winters, who travels to a dilapidated Louisiana plantation while searching for his missing wife, Mia. The Baker family and the plantation become the central setting, and Jack Baker is the antagonist specifically highlighted in reporting about the fan film.
That order matters because the reported short is not presented as an independent retelling with room to introduce every relationship and motivation. GamesRadar described Chandler Riggs’s BIOHAZARD as a “pulse-pounding 20-minute romp” adapting “Ethan Winter’s gruesome struggle with the terrifying Jack Baker.” A feature of that length can show a confrontation, but it cannot provide the same gradual discovery of Ethan, Mia, the Bakers, and the plantation that the game does.

What the game establishes before the film
Ethan Winters and Mia
The campaign begins with Ethan searching for Mia, his missing wife. That search is the personal reason he enters the plantation and the foundation for the decisions that follow. Watching a short centered on Ethan without knowing why he is there removes the emotional baseline for the story.

The Baker family and the plantation
The Bakers are not simply a collection of monsters encountered in unrelated scenes. Their dilapidated Louisiana plantation is the game’s defining environment, and the family’s presence gives the setting its identity. Exploring that location lets you understand how the film’s visual references and confrontations fit together rather than treating them as isolated horror images.
Survival-horror pacing
Capcom frames Resident Evil 7 around exploration, combat, resource conservation, and deciding when to fight or run. The first-person perspective makes those choices immediate: you investigate an unfamiliar space, judge a threat, and decide whether spending a scarce resource is safer than avoiding a fight. The fan short can depict the result of that pressure, but the campaign is where you experience it.
Choose a version that fits your hardware
Capcom originally released the game on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on January 24, 2017, in North America and Europe, followed by January 26, 2017, in Japan. PlayStation’s current listing includes PS4/PS5 Standard and Gold Editions. Regional storefronts can differ, so confirm the edition and platform shown for your account before buying.

If your only goal is to understand the fan movie, buy or use the Standard edition and play the main campaign. Choose Gold Edition when you also want the additional chapters; its value is the included post-story material, not a different prerequisite for the film.

Can you play Resident Evil 7 on PS5?
Yes, PlayStation’s current catalog lists Resident Evil 7 biohazard Standard and Gold Editions for PS5 as well as PS4. The listing is the relevant current reference because storefront availability and edition packaging can vary by country. Open the PlayStation Store on the account and console you will use, verify that the product is marked for PS5, and check whether the displayed edition includes the DLC you want.
Do not assume that buying a PS4 copy automatically gives every PS5 entitlement, or that a Gold Edition in one region has identical packaging in another. Read the platform and included-content lines on the live listing before checkout. If you specifically want virtual reality, use the PS4 route: PlayStation states that the VR features require PS4.
Follow this play order
- Install the main game. Select Resident Evil 7 biohazard Standard Edition or Gold Edition on your chosen platform. Gold already contains the main adventure, so do not launch an extra chapter first.
- Play the campaign from its opening. Follow Ethan’s search for Mia through the Louisiana plantation and let the game introduce the Baker family in its intended sequence.
- Finish the main story before opening the DLC. The film-preparation requirement is met when the campaign is complete; DLC is not needed to understand the basic Ethan-versus-Jack setup.
- Watch the fan short. After the campaign, you will recognize Ethan, Jack Baker, the plantation context, and the stakes that the reported adaptation compresses into roughly 20 minutes.
- Add the DLC only if you want more context. Play Not a Hero after Ethan’s fight, then End of Zoe for the Baker-family aftermath. Their placement is chronological context, not a condition for watching BIOHAZARD.
How to play the campaign with the movie in mind
Pay attention to the setting, not only the fights
The plantation is more than a backdrop. Exploration establishes where the Bakers live, how Ethan moves through their world, and why apparently ordinary spaces become threatening. Search rooms carefully, note how routes connect, and let the environment establish the family before you judge any single encounter.

Preserve resources for decisions that matter
Capcom describes the game as involving resource conservation and a choice between fighting and running. Treat ammunition, healing, and other usable supplies as decision tools rather than permission to defeat every threat immediately. When the game gives you a reason to avoid a confrontation, escaping can be the intended survival-horror choice. That habit also helps you understand Ethan’s vulnerability in the fan film.

Use the first-person viewpoint deliberately
The first-person camera is part of Resident Evil 7’s immersive-horror design. Look around corners, inspect spaces before moving forward, and distinguish what you have actually seen from what you merely expect to be there. The film’s camera may present Ethan and Jack from an external viewpoint, so experiencing Ethan’s limited perspective first makes the adaptation’s visual choices easier to read.
Finish the story rather than stopping at the Jack material
Jack is the confrontation most directly connected to the reported short, but the main campaign supplies the wider character and setting context around that conflict. Stopping as soon as Jack appears may leave Ethan’s purpose and the campaign’s stakes incomplete. Continue through the main story, then decide whether the optional chapters are worth your time.
Do you need the DLC?
No. The main campaign is the essential preparation. Gold Edition’s DLC is useful when you want to continue beyond Ethan’s central story, but it is not required to identify the people or place featured in the fan short.
Not a Hero
Capcom’s package description places Not a Hero after Ethan’s fight. That makes it a post-campaign chapter. Play it after completing the main story if you want an additional perspective on what follows; do not use it as an introduction to the Bakers or Ethan.

End of Zoe
End of Zoe follows the Baker-family aftermath. It is therefore best treated as follow-up material after both the main campaign and, if you choose, Not a Hero. Its subject is the aftermath rather than the minimum setup for the fan-made movie.
Why Gold Edition can still be the practical choice
Gold Edition packages the adventure with previously released DLC. It is convenient if you expect to play beyond the campaign, because you do not have to assemble the extras separately. It does not change the recommended order: campaign first, fan short after the campaign, and DLC afterward according to the sequence above.

PlayStation lists a free PS4 Beginning Hour teaser demo. It is a useful taste of the game’s tone and first-person presentation, but it is not a replacement for the campaign. A teaser cannot supply the complete development of Ethan’s search, Mia, the Baker family, or the plantation story that the film’s premise relies on.
Use the demo when you are deciding whether the atmosphere and viewpoint suit you. If your goal is comprehension rather than sampling, move from the demo to the full main game. The demo’s availability is listed for PS4, so do not assume an identical offer appears on every platform or in every region.

Should you use PlayStation VR?
PS4 supports optional full-game PlayStation VR, according to Capcom’s platform information and PlayStation’s current notes. VR is an immersion choice, not a separate story route: it does not replace the campaign, unlock a different order, or provide extra information needed for the fan film.
- Choose standard first-person play if you want the simplest setup or do not own the required PS4 VR equipment.
- Choose the VR mode only if you already have compatible PS4 hardware and are comfortable with the additional intensity of immersive horror.
- Do not buy a PS5 version expecting PlayStation VR support based only on the PS4 listing; PlayStation specifically identifies PS4 as the requirement for the VR features.
What is known about Chandler Riggs’s BIOHAZARD?
GamesRadar reported the project on October 15, 2026, describing it as a roughly 20-minute fan-made short focused on Ethan Winters’s struggle with Jack Baker. The report also reproduced a “Wow” reaction banner attributed to Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi. That reaction does not establish that Capcom produced, commissioned, licensed, or canonized the film.
Accordingly, treat BIOHAZARD as an unofficial fan production. The available report supports its premise and approximate length, but it does not establish Capcom authorship or licensing. Watch it as an interpretation of the game, not as an official replacement for the campaign or a new canonical chapter.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Watching the short before playing anything
You may recognize Jack’s name, but you will miss the reasons Ethan is at the plantation and the relationship that drives the search. Play the main campaign first.
Starting with Gold Edition DLC
Gold Edition’s extras are packaged with the game, which can make them look like alternate starting points. They are not. Begin with the main adventure; Not a Hero and End of Zoe are later chapters.
Confusing the demo with the story
Beginning Hour demonstrates the tone and format, but its teaser scope cannot provide the campaign’s full character and plot setup. Use it to sample, not to prepare completely.
Assuming every store listing is identical
Edition names, platform entitlements, DLC packaging, prices, and promotions can change by region and date. Current prices and discounts are volatile; verify the live listing before purchasing. The stable recommendation is the content order, not a particular temporary sale.
