You can play a purchased PC game offline only after its own launcher, DRM, files and first-run components have been prepared and tested without a network connection. While online, update the launcher and game, start the game once, finish every prerequisite, then disable networking and verify that it still starts. The storefront alone does not determine offline access.
For future reinstalls, keep the files that actually work for that title. GOG supplies complete offline installer sets for supported games; Steam Backup works for some games but is not universal; Epic Games Launcher can start eligible installed single-player games offline but does not provide a general standalone-installer workflow in the reviewed support guidance.
What “offline” means for a PC game
Offline play is a property of an individual game and its dependencies, not a blanket feature of a store. A title may depend on a launcher login, a separate publisher launcher, third-party digital-rights management (DRM), an activation check, an online-only service, or a first-run installer that has not yet run. Another title from the same store may work with no network at all.
Recommended Free Tools
Separate the problem into two tasks:
- Offline launching: the installed game starts and lets you use its offline-capable modes with networking disabled.
- Offline preservation: you retain installer files that can reinstall the game later, ideally without downloading the entire title again.
A successful online launch proves neither. A game can run today through an active launcher session and still fail after a drive replacement unless you have preserved the correct installers, patches, redistributables and account information.

Prepare every game before you need it offline
Do this while you have a reliable connection and access to the account that owns the game. Repeat the process for each title; a launcher-wide offline switch does not make every installed game eligible.
- Update the launcher. Install the current update for Steam, Epic Games Launcher or the launcher required by the title. A stale client can reject Offline Mode even when the game files are present.
- Update the game. Let the download finish and wait for any file verification or post-update processing to complete. Do not disconnect while the launcher still reports an update, installation or repair task.
- Start the game once while connected. Reach the main menu, not merely a splash screen. Complete first-run setup, DirectX or Visual C++ redistributable installation, shader preparation, license prompts and any publisher-launcher sign-in that the title requests.
- Allow required components to settle. Some games open a separate installer or launcher window. Finish it, close the game normally and start it again online so the launcher records the completed setup.
- Configure offline behavior. Enable or confirm the store’s offline option where one exists. If a game has its own “remember me,” “stay signed in” or offline setting, configure it while authenticated.
- Disconnect deliberately. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, or use the operating system’s network-disconnect control. A firewall block is less reliable because a launcher may still see a local network or a captive-portal response.
- Test the exact scenario. Start the launcher and the game with networking disabled. Load a local save and begin a new offline session if the game supports one. Test after a full restart, not only after suspending a running client.
- Write down the result. Record the store, game edition, version, date of the successful test, required launchers and any unavailable online features.
If the offline test fails, reconnect and read the exact message before changing files. “Needs an update,” “installation incomplete” and “authentication required” point to different remedies.

Getting Steam games ready
Steam Offline Mode is game-specific. Steam Support’s guidance is to launch the games you want to use offline and verify that no further update or installation requirement remains. In practice, open each intended title while online, finish its first-run work, exit, then choose Steam’s offline option and test again with the network disabled.
If Steam says a game cannot be started in Offline Mode, the client or the game files need updating. Reconnect, allow Steam to update, launch the title until it reaches a usable menu, and repeat the offline test. A title that opens through a separate publisher launcher may still require that launcher’s own cached credentials or an online check, so note the dependency rather than assuming Steam has removed it.

What Steam Backup does—and does not do
Steam includes a Backup feature intended to copy supported game data for restoration. Valve warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with that feature. A backup can therefore be useful for some titles but cannot be treated as a universal standalone installer.
Do not infer that copying a Steam library folder, or exporting a Steam Backup, guarantees a future installation on another computer. Keep your notes about third-party launchers, activation requirements and the Steam account that owns the game. For titles with external installers, preserve those installers separately when the publisher provides them.

- If the client refuses Offline Mode, reconnect and wait for all Steam and game updates to finish.
- If a game opens but immediately requests a publisher login, test that publisher launcher while online and record whether it offers its own offline setting.
- If a restored backup asks to download files, compare the backup’s game title and edition with the account’s installed version; Steam Backup coverage varies by title.
Epic Games Launcher: eligible installed games only
Epic Games support describes Offline Mode as a way to play supported single-player games using the Epic Games Launcher without an internet connection. Offline Mode is enabled automatically when the launcher starts without internet or when the device loses connectivity.
Eligibility is not universal. The game must already be installed, and the title must support offline use. Multiplayer and other connected services are unavailable without a connection; Epic also lists cloud saves and achievements among the features that may not work offline. Treat the offline launch as a title-level capability, not a guarantee for every game in your library.
Epic preparation procedure
- While connected, update Epic Games Launcher and the game.
- Start the game and complete all first-run installers, sign-in prompts and configuration work.
- Exit the game and close the launcher completely so it is not relying on a still-valid network session.
- Disable networking, start Epic Games Launcher and confirm that the installed title appears available.
- Launch the game and test a local single-player save. Record which online features are absent.
Epic’s offline behavior does not by itself create an installer archive. For a later reinstall, preserve the game through whatever installation or backup method the title’s publisher supports, and keep your account and version notes with the files.

GOG: the clearest standalone-installer workflow
Download the complete offline backup set
GOG Support provides a “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” option in the game library. Use it while connected, then download every numbered installer part shown for the game. If the library lists patches or downloadable content, download the parts you intend to preserve as well.
Installers are often split into multiple files. Missing one numbered part can make the set unusable even when the largest file is present. Keep the original filenames and place all parts for one game and edition in a clearly named folder. Do not mix installers for different languages, editions or versions without documenting the difference.
Install without the app
GOG explains that an offline installer can be run directly, without the GOG GALAXY application. Copy the complete set to the target computer, run the main installer and provide the other numbered parts when prompted. Apply any desired patch and DLC installers after the base game, following the order indicated in the library.
GOG’s developer documentation says offline installers are generated after builds are published and that updated builds can take several hours to appear. If a newly released build is not immediately available as an offline installer, keep the previous complete set until the replacement has downloaded and passed an installation test.
What GOG’s policy does and does not promise
In a policy article published 17 March 2022, GOG states: “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” The same article says, “Games you bought and downloaded can never be taken from you or altered against your will,” and that “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” These are GOG policy commitments about purchased games and single-player access, not a promise that every multiplayer mode, cloud feature or third-party service will function without a network.

Store comparison for offline play and preservation
| Store | Standalone installer | Is the launcher optional after installation? | Offline eligibility | What disappears offline | Third-party dependencies | Keeping a second backup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Not a universal feature. Steam Backup works for some titles; Valve warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders are excluded. | Title-specific; some games still need Steam or another launcher. | Must be prepared and tested for each game in Steam Offline Mode. | Any connected service required by the title, including multiplayer or cloud functions. | May include third-party installers, downloaders or authentication. | Possible with Steam Backup where supported, plus separate copies of any external installers. |
| Epic Games Launcher | Not established as a general standalone-installer workflow in the support guidance reviewed. | Epic Launcher starts in Offline Mode automatically, but only supported installed games can run. | Eligible, already-installed single-player games only. | Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements and other online services may be unavailable. | Depends on the individual title and any publisher service it invokes. | Preserve the supported installation or publisher-provided files; maintain your own external copy. |
| GOG | Yes for games that list “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS”; download every numbered part, patch and DLC you need. | GOG GALAXY is optional for single-player offline mode under GOG’s stated policy. | Single-player mode is required to be accessible offline under the 17 March 2022 policy article; verify the specific title. | Online-only multiplayer, friends, leaderboards and similar services. | Third-party services can still impose their own requirements. | Simple: copy the complete installer set to a second external drive or USB SSD and retain the verified version. |
“Not established” in the table means the cited support material does not describe a general installer-download mechanism; it is not evidence that no publisher-specific method exists.

Use two physical copies
Copy installers and Steam backup files to an external hard drive or USB SSD, then keep a second copy in a separate location. Capacity is user-dependent because game, patch and DLC sizes vary. A second drive protects against a failed disk, accidental deletion or a corrupted copy in the primary archive.
Preserve the information needed to use the files
Alongside each game folder, create a plain-text file containing:
- Store and account name (never the password).
- Game title, edition, language and version or build number.
- Installer filenames, including every numbered part.
- Patch and DLC filenames and the order in which to apply them.
- Required launcher, publisher account or third-party installer.
- Date of the last successful online launch and offline test.
- Features confirmed unavailable without networking.
Keep the text file with both backup copies. If you use checksums, record them after copying so a later verification can reveal a damaged file before you need to reinstall.

Do not overwrite a known-good set immediately
When a store publishes an update, retain the previously tested installer set until the new set has downloaded, installed on a spare location or test machine, and passed the same offline launch test. This is particularly useful when an updated GOG build is delayed after publication or when a Steam title changes its third-party launcher.
Test before travel, relocation or an outage
A practical test should simulate the failure you are preparing for, not merely close a browser tab.
- Synchronize any saves you intentionally want to keep while online, then close the game and launcher.
- Disable every network path, including Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a tethered phone.
- Restart the computer.
- Start the required launcher and wait for its offline state to appear.
- Launch the game, load a local save and play long enough to exercise the mode you need.
- Quit normally and launch it a second time while still disconnected.
- Restore networking only after recording the result and any error text.
If the second launch fails but the first succeeds, the game may have been relying on a cached process or session. Treat the title as unverified until it passes after a full restart.

“Cannot start in Offline Mode”
On Steam, reconnect and allow both the client and game to update; Steam Support identifies unfinished updates or installation requirements as the usual reason for this message. Launch the title online to complete setup, then test again with networking disabled.
The launcher opens, but the game requests a login
Reconnect, start the game and any publisher launcher it invokes, and complete the sign-in or “remember me” step. Test that launcher separately while offline. If it still insists on authentication, document the dependency; do not assume a local copy of the game files can remove it.
The game starts but a feature is missing
That is expected for services designed to run online. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, friends, leaderboards and similar features can disappear even when a single-player campaign works. Keep local saves and make an online synchronization plan before disconnecting.
A restored backup asks for missing files
Check that every numbered installer part is present and that the set matches the game’s edition, language and version. For Steam, remember that third-party installers and downloaders may not be included in Steam Backup. For GOG, return to the library and download the omitted part, patch or DLC, then update both archive copies.
An installer works on one computer but not another
Compare operating-system requirements, architecture, graphics drivers and redistributables. Re-run the first-run prerequisites from the preserved installer set while connected, if possible, and add the result to your notes. Offline installers preserve game files; they do not guarantee that every future operating-system environment has the required drivers or runtime components.
Quick Recap
A repeatable preservation checklist
- Update the launcher and game while online.
- Launch once and finish first-run installers, redistributables and license prompts.
- Confirm the launcher’s offline behavior where supported.
- Disconnect networking and test after a full restart.
- For GOG, download the complete offline installer set, all numbered parts, desired patches and DLC.
- For Steam, use Backup where it works and note every third-party launcher or authentication dependency.
- Copy the files to an external hard drive or USB SSD, then make a second copy in another location.
- Keep a text record of the store, edition, version, filenames, dependencies and date of the last successful offline test.
