Insert a physical PS5 game disc into a PS5 with a disc drive, let the console install it, then start the game from Games home. The disc must remain inserted each time you play. PS4 discs work similarly on a disc-equipped PS5 when the title is compatible. The original PS5 Digital Edition cannot read discs; only specified newer Digital Edition model groups can accept a separately sold disc drive.
What works, at a glance
Your console model and the game’s compatibility status determine whether a physical disc will work. Installation copies game data to the console, but the disc remains the ownership check required to launch the game.

Check your PS5 before inserting a disc
Identify the hardware
A PS5 with a visible disc slot can read physical PS5 and compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc support. Sony identifies the CFI-2000 Digital Edition consoles and CFI-7000 model-group consoles as compatible with its separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive. A Digital Edition model outside those groups cannot be made into a disc console by buying that drive.

Check the model-group marking on the console packaging or its hardware label before purchasing an add-on drive. Do not assume that every console sold as “Digital Edition” has the same upgrade path.

Confirm the PS4 title
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. A small set is PS4-only. The PlayStation Store labels an incompatible title “Playable on: PS4 only,” so check that status before opening the case or buying downloadable add-ons. Compatibility does not guarantee that every feature behaves exactly as it did on PS4; some games can lose functions or display errors on PS5.
Update the console
Keep PS5 system software current before troubleshooting a disc. A current system gives the console the best chance of applying the game’s compatibility fixes and updates. Connect the PS5 to the internet if the game requests an update; an update is separate from the data installed from the disc.
Play a physical PS5 game
- Insert the game disc. Place the disc in the PS5’s drive with the label facing the direction indicated by the console’s orientation. The PS5 detects the disc and begins preparing the game.
- Wait for installation. The game installs automatically the first time you play it. The disc supplies the installation data, while the console stores the playable files on its internal storage.
- Choose optional content. If the installation screen offers add-ons, select only the items you want. The base game and optional content can be presented separately.
- Open the game from Games home. After installation finishes, select the game tile or its game hub on Games home. If an update is offered, allow it to complete before starting a network-dependent mode.
- Leave the disc inserted. The PS5 checks the physical disc when you launch the game. Installing the files does not turn a disc purchase into a digital license; removing the disc prevents the game from starting the next time.
If the game is moved to another PS5, the destination console still needs the disc to install and to verify play. A disc installation is not a portable license that can be activated without the physical media.

Play a physical PS4 game on PS5
- Verify drive and compatibility. The PS5 must have a disc drive, and the game must not be identified as “Playable on: PS4 only.”
- Insert the PS4 disc. The PS5 recognizes the disc and starts preparing the game. Sony notes that an update may be required before the game can be used.
- Install the requested data and update. Let the console copy the game and apply any system or game update it presents. Keep the PS5 connected if the update is delivered online.
- Select the game hub from Games home. Use the game tile or hub after installation to launch the PS4 version on the PS5.
- Keep that same disc inserted. The PS4 disc is required for every play session, even after the game data and updates are installed.
Some PS4 titles may show an error or have reduced functionality on PS5. If a game is important to you, start it and test the features you need before purchasing related add-ons. Compatibility is broad, but it is not a promise that every peripheral, mode, or legacy function behaves identically.
Can a PS5 Digital Edition play physical games?
Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition
No. The original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition was built without a disc drive and cannot read PS5, PS4, or PS3 game discs. There is no supported way to use a physical game with that model. You need a PS5 with a drive or a digital version of the game.

CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups
Sony says a CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive can be added to CFI-2000 Digital Edition consoles and CFI-7000 model-group consoles. The drive is sold separately. Verify the exact model group before buying; “Digital Edition” alone is not enough information to establish compatibility.
Once a supported drive is installed, use the same disc procedures as with a PS5 that has a built-in drive: insert the game, allow installation and updates, launch from Games home, and retain the disc whenever you play.
Why the disc is still required after installation
Game installation and ownership verification are different jobs. The console copies the large playable data set to storage so the game can run, but the physical disc acts as the license check. Consequently:
- Removing the disc after installation does not create a disc-free version.
- Putting the console in rest mode does not remove the requirement; insert the disc again if it has been taken out.
- Switching users on the same PS5 does not eliminate the check. The game disc must be available when the title is launched.
- If you own two physical games, use the disc for the title you want to start; the console cannot verify a different game with the wrong disc.
This requirement also matters when sharing a console or lending a game. Whoever wants to play the installed disc version needs access to the corresponding physical disc.
Games supplied on two discs
Some physical releases include a data disc and a play disc. Follow the labels and the on-screen prompts rather than choosing discs at random:

- Insert the data disc first.
- Allow the console to begin copying the installation data.
- When prompted, remove the data disc and insert the play disc.
- Complete the installation and any update.
- Leave the play disc inserted whenever you launch the game.
The play disc is the one needed for the ownership check after installation. If the console repeatedly asks for the other disc, cancel the launch, read the prompt carefully, and insert the disc identified on screen.
Updates, add-ons and compatibility limits
System and game updates
A disc contains a particular release of the game. The PS5 may download a newer patch, and Sony advises keeping PS5 system software current. An update can be required for a PS4 title to run on PS5 or to correct a known error. Do not interpret a successful installation as proof that every update has been applied.
Optional add-ons
Install only add-ons that match the disc’s game and region requirements. If an add-on depends on a feature that the PS4 version does not provide on PS5, the game may not expose it correctly. Sony recommends trying a PS4 game on PS5 before buying add-ons because some games can lose functions or show errors after compatibility changes.
PS3 discs and PS3-based upgrade paths
PS5 does not support PlayStation 3 game discs. A PS4 digital game obtained through an upgrade path that still requires the original PS3 disc also cannot be launched on PS5 without that disc, and the PS5 cannot read it. A PS4 or PS5 disc is required for the corresponding supported disc-based installation.
Move a disc-based game to another PS5
Reinstalling from the physical disc
When you move a disc-based game to a second PS5, insert the game disc into the destination console and let it install there. Copying saved data or other files does not transfer the disc license; the destination console still needs the disc for installation and every launch.

Using USB extended storage for compatible PS4 data
Compatible PS4 game data may also be accessed from a USB extended-storage drive. The physical PS4 disc remains necessary for the ownership check. USB storage can reduce the need to copy the same PS4 installation again, but it does not make the title digital or remove the requirement to insert its disc.

The PS5 does not recognize the disc
- Confirm that the disc is a supported PS5 or PS4 game disc, not a PS3 disc.
- Check the console model. An original CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot read any game disc.
- Remove and reinsert the disc in the correct orientation, then allow the console a moment to detect it.
- Try another known-compatible game disc. If no disc is recognized, the issue may be with the drive or the console rather than the title.
- Install the latest PS5 system software before attempting further troubleshooting.
The game installed but will not start without the disc
This is expected behavior for a physical release. Insert the matching game disc and launch the installed tile. Installing the data does not grant a digital license.
A PS4 game shows an error or missing feature
- Check whether the title is listed as “Playable on: PS4 only.” If so, it is not supported on PS5.
- Install the latest game update and PS5 system software.
- Test the specific feature you need before purchasing add-ons, because some PS4 titles lose functions or display errors on PS5.
- If the title remains unusable, play it on a PS4 or use an officially supported digital release instead.
The console asks for a different disc during installation
For a two-disc release, insert the data disc first and swap to the play disc only when prompted. After installation, keep the play disc inserted for launch.
The game works on one PS5 but not another
Compare the consoles’ drive hardware and system software. A disc installed on one PS5 still requires a compatible drive and the same physical disc on the other. A Digital Edition without a supported add-on drive cannot use the installation.

A disc storage case can help protect the media when a game must remain available for every session. That is a practical organization choice, not a requirement or an endorsement of a particular accessory.
Essential checklist
- Identify whether the PS5 has a built-in drive, a supported add-on drive, or no disc support.
- For PS4 discs, check the title’s PlayStation Store compatibility label.
- Update PS5 system software and accept any game update offered.
- Insert the disc and allow the automatic installation to finish.
- For two-disc games, start with the data disc and switch to the play disc when prompted.
- Keep the matching disc inserted every time you play.
- When moving the game to another PS5, install it from the disc again or use compatible PS4 data on USB extended storage, but still keep the disc for verification.
In practical terms, physical PS5 games and compatible PS4 games are straightforward on a disc-equipped PS5: install once, update when asked, launch from Games home, and keep the correct disc inserted. The decisive exceptions are unsupported PS4-only titles, all PS3 discs, and Digital Edition consoles whose model group cannot accept a disc drive.
