Yes—but it takes two separate community-made emulators, and neither offers guaranteed compatibility with its console’s full library. For PlayStation 2 games, the relevant project is PS5SX2, a native PS5 port of PCSX2. For first-generation Xbox games—sometimes called “Xbox 1,” not Xbox One—the project is XPSemu, a native PS5 port of xemu. Both require a jailbroken PS5 and system and game files you provide yourself.

These are homebrew routes, not Sony-supported backward compatibility. The setup also depends on each project’s helper and app-mounting tools, so check its current documentation for your console firmware before proceeding.

Choose the emulator for the console you want to emulate

Path Emulator Current compatibility evidence Main performance caveat
PlayStation 2 PS5SX2, a native PS5 port of PCSX2 The project reported 108 games started during development or early testing in September 2026. It warns that this is not a compatibility guarantee. Check the individual game notes; a game starting does not establish sustained full-speed play.
Original Xbox XPSemu, a native PS5 port of xemu Alpha 1 lists four developer-tested games, with results ranging from smooth play to substantial slowdowns. CPU-heavy scenes can fall below a game’s frame-rate cap; bugs and missing features are expected.

These are distinct projects with different requirements and compatibility records. The desktop version of upstream xemu is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux; the PS5 project is XPSemu, not the desktop app installed directly on a console. See xemu’s official site for the upstream emulator’s scope.

What you need before setting up either emulator

Both routes assume that your PS5 is already jailbroken and can run homebrew. Each also requires a way to load its helper tools and mount the app. The emulator projects do not include the console firmware or game files needed to emulate the original hardware.

  • For XPSemu: the project lists XPSemu Tools alongside kstuff, an app-mounting method, your own Xbox MCPX boot ROM, Xbox BIOS/flash ROM, hard-disk image, and game files. It reads XISO images; the README says full redump images need conversion.

Only use system and game files you are entitled to use. Neither project supplies BIOS files or games. Consult the current project README for exact setup steps and firmware support; requirements and compatibility can change between builds.

Set up the PS2 path with PS5SX2

PS5SX2 is a native PS5 port of PCSX2. Its project documentation says PCSX2 recompilers run on the PS5 CPU and a Vulkan renderer draws through a modified PS5 Vulkan driver. It advertises features such as upscaling, patches, save states, and per-game configuration, but those features do not establish how a particular game performs.

  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
  1. Check your firmware and homebrew setup. Compare your PS5 model and firmware with the tested-console information in the PS5SX2 README. The project’s listed tests include PS5 Pro firmware 10.01 and 11.40, and other PS5 models, including a Slim, on firmware 6.02, 8.40, 10.01, 10.60, 11.40, 11.60, 12.00, and 12.70. The project says unlisted firmware has not been tried; a listed firmware is not, by itself, a promise that every setup or game works.
  2. Install the project and its required helper and mounting components. Follow the README’s current instructions for PS5SX2 Helper, kstuff, and ShadowMountPlus or an equivalent app-mounting setup. Do not assume that a helper or installation method from an older build still applies.
  3. Provide your own BIOS and game files. Dump the PS2 BIOS from your own console and use your own game files in one of the formats listed by the project: ISO, CHD, CSO, or ZSO. The README documents USB locations for games and BIOS as well as console storage, so an external USB drive is an optional way to manage those files—not a specifically tested drive recommendation.
  4. Check the game’s individual status. Use PS5SX2’s game table for title-specific notes. The project reported 108 titles started during development or initial testing in September 2026, but explicitly cautions that this does not guarantee compatibility and that results can change between builds. Treat “starts” as a basic launch result, not proof of full-speed play from beginning to end.

Another homebrew option is the separate PS5 RetroArch project, which documents a PS2 core path. Its README reports tests of the God of War II and Final Fantasy X demos and GTA San Andreas at 6× internal resolution and full speed, along with multi-threaded VU1 and save states. Those are limited project-reported examples for a separate route, not a replacement for PS5SX2’s game-specific compatibility notes.

Set up the original Xbox path with XPSemu

XPSemu is a native PS5 port of xemu. Its README describes Alpha 1 as its first public build: it boots and plays real games, but users should expect bugs, slowdowns in CPU-heavy scenes, and missing features.

  1. Confirm your PS5 can run the required homebrew. Check the current XPSemu README for supported setup details before installing.
  2. Install XPSemu and its helper and mounting tools. The project lists XPSemu Tools alongside kstuff and a way to mount the app. Follow its current instructions rather than assuming another emulator’s setup applies.
  3. Prepare your own Xbox files. XPSemu requires the Xbox MCPX boot ROM, BIOS/flash ROM, hard-disk image, and game files. The README says these are not included and that full redump images need conversion to XISO images.
  4. Use the Alpha 1 results as examples, not a compatibility promise. The small developer test table gives a useful indication of the build’s uneven performance, but does not predict every game or scene.
Game XPSemu developer-reported Alpha 1 result
Halo 2 30 FPS stock; with a 60 FPS patch, 51–60 FPS in the opening and 36–50 FPS during gameplay.
Forza Motorsport 30 FPS in menus and intro, but 15–21 FPS during races.
Fable: The Lost Chapters 22–30 FPS in many areas and 10–20 FPS in demanding areas.
Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex Reported to run smoothly; a numeric frame rate is not stated.

These are results reported by the XPSemu developer for Alpha 1, accessed in October 2026—not independent benchmarks. The project identifies the emulated Xbox CPU as a bottleneck, which helps explain why a game can slow down in demanding scenes even when less intensive sections run better. Alpha 1 also has a 64 MB emulated Xbox memory limit, lacks save states, and requires DSP to remain off for most games, according to the project documentation.

Understand what Sony does—and does not—support

Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 and explains caveats for PS4 titles. It does not document native PS2 or original Xbox playback. PS5SX2 and XPSemu are community homebrew projects that require a jailbroken console, not Sony-supported compatibility features.
