The simplest way to play original PS2 discs without jailbreaking is an unmodified PlayStation 2 from the same region as the games. If you want a later Sony console with HDMI, only four early fat PS3 model families—CECHA, CECHB, CECHC and CECHE—officially accept PS2 game discs. A stock PS4 or PS5 does not play them from disc. For a modern TV, connect the PS2 through a compatible analogue input, a powered converter or a scaler; no retail PS2 has native HDMI.

Which legal method actually plays the original disc?
An unmodified PS2 is the straightforward choice: the game runs from its original disc in the console it was made for. An early backward-compatible fat PS3 is the only later Sony-console option that also reads PS2 game discs. Both let you keep the original disc in the drive; neither requires a jailbreak.
That distinction matters because a PS2-era game being playable on a newer system is not the same as that system playing your PS2 disc. Some PS2-era titles are sold separately as digital releases or included in a Classics catalogue, but those versions use a different licence and software. Owning the PS2 disc does not automatically unlock a PS4 or PS5 edition.

Should you use an original PS2 or an early compatible PS3?
Choose an original PS2 if disc compatibility and simplicity matter most. Choose a compatible PS3 if you value its HDMI connection and the convenience of one console for PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs, and you can verify the exact model and condition before buying.

Which PS3 models play PS2 discs?
Only the early fat PS3 families CECHA, CECHB, CECHC and CECHE have official PS2 disc support. A PS3’s appearance, USB ports or seller description is not enough to establish compatibility: check the complete CECH model code on the console’s label.

The four front USB ports on some early PS3s can be a clue, but the model label is the reliable check. The CECHA/CECHB full-hardware design is generally the safer pick if support for a particular game is the priority. Even those models are not guaranteed to run every title perfectly; Sony’s original compatibility list is no longer available, and community compatibility lists may help when a specific game is important.

Their age makes condition a real trade-off: inspect for overheating history or other faults, and prefer a seller with a return option. Do not assume that a PS3 Slim or Super Slim can be made into a disc-compatible model just because it is a later revision.
To start a game on a compatible PS3, first verify the CECH code, insert a region-appropriate PS2 disc, and open it from the Game column. In the Memory Card Utility, create or assign an internal PS2 memory card. If you have saves on an original physical PS2 card, Sony’s USB memory card adaptor is the official route to transfer them.
What do you need to start playing on an original PS2?
Plan for the whole setup, not just the console. You need a PS2, power equipment appropriate to its revision, a working controller, a compatible display connection, the game disc and a PS2 memory card if you want to keep progress.

- Console: identify the SCPH model from its label rather than relying on colour or shell appearance.
- Power: Slim revisions differ: early Slim systems use an external power brick, while the SCPH-90000 family has an internal supply. Confirm the correct equipment for the particular console.
- Controller: a DualShock 2 is the general-purpose choice. Some PS1 pads work with supported software but are not a full substitute: several DualShock 2 buttons can report pressure, not just a pressed-or-not-pressed state. A PS4 or PS5 controller is not a drop-in PS2 controller; third-party converters exist but are not an official Sony path.
- Memory card: many games let you begin without one, but a PS2 card is normally needed to save progress. The disc is not the save medium.
- Display cable or converter: pick a connection your TV accepts. The options are described below.
- Region-matched disc and console: standard retail PS2s are region-locked for PS1 and PS2 game discs.
Fat PS2s are larger and commonly have a rear expansion bay. Slim models have a smaller shell, a top-opening disc lid and a network connector. For ordinary disc gaming, a tested, working machine is a better goal than chasing a supposedly superior revision: a Slim is a redesign of the same platform, not a higher-performance PS2. North American model examples confirmed for component-cable compatibility include fat SCPH-30001, SCPH-35001, SCPH-39001 and SCPH-50001, plus Slim SCPH-70001 and SCPH-90001.
When buying used, check that the console cold-boots, reads more than one game, and handles both CD and DVD discs. Test saving and reloading, both controller ports, the tray or lid, the fan and the power equipment. Include a return policy in your decision, and calculate the cost of a usable setup—including a memory card and TV connection—not just the console listing.
For a basic save check, save a small amount of progress, shut the console down, reboot and reload it. A game that starts successfully has not necessarily proved that its memory card or save process works.
Will a PS2 disc from another region work?
Usually not on an unmodified retail console. Standard PS2s are region-restricted for both PS2 and PS1 game discs, so a UK PAL console generally will not boot a US or Japanese game just because the disc fits.
Disc region, electrical voltage and video standard are separate issues. A console and disc matching in one respect does not establish that a different-region machine is suitable for your power or display setup. Check the console’s region and game packaging before buying. A listing that promises a “region-free” retail PS2 may describe a modification, which is outside this guide’s unmodified-console approach.
Most original PlayStation discs can also run on a PS2, subject to region and title-specific problems. Sony published a notice for SCPH-75003 listing PS1 games that could have issues. PS1 games save to a PS1-format memory card, even when played on a PS2; a PS2 card is not a replacement for that format.

How do you connect a PS2 to a modern TV?
A retail PS2 has no native HDMI output. Its AV Multi Out carries analogue video; many revisions also have optical digital audio. If the TV still has a compatible analogue input, connect it directly. Otherwise, use a converter or scaler that accepts the signal your games produce. An HDMI-shaped plug alone does not perform analogue-to-digital conversion.
When using a component/YPbPr connection or converter, set the PS2 to match it: System Configuration → Component Video Out → Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr. RGB is the setting for RGB SCART. A mismatch can produce a black or green picture. If the menu cannot be seen with the current connection, reconnect composite video to change the setting.

HD Retrovision describes its PlayStation 2/3 YPbPr component cable as supporting 240p60, 480i/p and 1080i, as well as PAL 288p/576i; it is a 6-foot, 75-ohm, shielded cable. Its product guidance notes that PS2/PS3 consoles natively support YPbPr when display settings are configured properly. Component improves signal separation, not a game’s original resolution.
Cheap converters vary. A BitFunx-class converter connects at AV Multi Out, converts YPbPr to HDMI, embeds analogue audio and takes USB power. It is a converter, not an upscaler, and the listed model does not support PS1 games because those lack YPbPr output. GamePro’s 2024 report on a no-name INF G300/TCI-YNPS2 unit found the conversion usable but noted a visible quality gap versus a proper scaler. Latency figures were not available in the available data, so do not assume a dongle is suitable for latency-sensitive play without checking its own documentation.
Pound says its HD Link Cable taps the console’s native RGB signal for colour reproduction and image fidelity beyond standard AV cables. It forces 720p because many HDMI displays handle 480i and 240p poorly. It is a distinct option from a basic YPbPr dongle, not a guarantee that every display or game will look identical.
For a higher-end analogue-to-HDMI path, a RetroTINK 2X-Pro, 5X-Pro or 4K can pair with component cables; OSSC and GBS-Control are other scaler families. The 5X-Pro is described as a 1080p-class option with motion-adaptive deinterlacing, while the 4K scales toward 2160p. A scaler does not require opening the PS2 or installing an internal HDMI modification. RetroTINK products can cost several times as much as a dongle and may be unavailable at a given retailer.

Prices are retailer listings checked Nov 2026, not universal street prices: Pound HD Link Cable was listed at $44.99; BitFunx PS2-to-HDMI at €26.99; HD Retrovision’s component cable at $42.09. RetroStuff Canada listed the RetroTINK 2X-Pro at CAD $144, 5X-Pro at CAD $359 and 4K Pro at CAD $861, with those listings sold out at access. These are different currencies and retailer listings, so compare local total cost and availability rather than treating the numbers as directly interchangeable.

PS1 discs add an important compatibility check: choose a display path that accepts 240p/288p if you plan to play them. Many inexpensive HDMI devices are designed around the PS2’s common 480i/480p modes and may not handle the lower progressive modes correctly. If you mainly play PS2 games, verify the modes your titles use; if your setup includes PS1 games, confirm 240p/288p explicitly.

No. A stock PS4 or PS5 cannot play an original PS2 game disc. Selected PS2-era games are available as separate digital releases, and PlayStation Plus Premium has included selected classics in supported regions, but availability varies and catalogue games can leave the service.
Sony’s PS2-on-PS4 programme began in 2015, with examples including Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy. Modern Store listings have included Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus and Tomb Raider: Legend; a PS4 PS2 Classics bundle from Rockstar has included Canis Canem Edit, Max Payne, The Warriors, Red Dead Revolver and Manhunt. Those are examples, not a promise of current availability or the full PS2 library. Check the PlayStation Store in your region before relying on a particular title. Essential and Extra should not be assumed to include the Classics Catalogue.
Do not mistake a recent headline about PS2 discs working on a jailbroken PS5 for official backward compatibility. In October 2026, PS5SX2 was reported reading and dumping physical PS2 DVDs on a PS5 running exploit-compatible firmware, then emulating them; it does not provide the stock-console “insert disc and play” experience. The reported method requires a jailbreak and user-supplied game and BIOS files, and the built-in PS5 drive does not read CD-format PS2 games. It is outside this guide’s legal, unmodified-console recommendation, and no setup steps are appropriate here.

How should you choose?
For the broadest straightforward disc experience, buy an unmodified PS2 in good condition, matching the region of your game collection, and budget for a DualShock 2, memory card and working TV connection. If HDMI and one-console convenience matter more, look specifically for a compatible CECHA, CECHB, CECHC or CECHE fat PS3, verify the code from a photograph of the label, and account for its age and title-specific compatibility limits.
For a modern display, start with what inputs it has. Use component cables into a compatible TV or scaler when picture quality matters; use a powered HDMI converter when convenience and cost matter more, while checking progressive-mode support. A PS4 or PS5 digital release can be a convenient way to revisit a particular game, but it is a separate purchase or service entitlement—not a way to play the original PS2 disc.

Can I play PS2 games on a PS3 Slim if I use a digital version?
A PS3 Slim can play certain PS2 titles released for it digitally, but that is separate from reading a PS2 game disc. Check the exact title and regional PlayStation Store availability; digital catalogues and disc compatibility are different questions.
Will a PS2 memory card work in a backward-compatible PS3?
The PS3 uses an internal virtual PS2 memory card for gameplay rather than accepting a PS2 card directly. Sony’s USB memory card adaptor provides an official way to transfer saves from a physical card.
