How co-op works
Online, couch and mixed co-op
The game supports solo play or co-op for up to four players, either online or locally on the same system. Its FAQ describes mixed co-op: two or more people playing together on one console or PC can join online players in the same group. This lets a household play together locally while adding friends who are elsewhere.

In an official Xbox interview, design director Laura de Llorens said matchmaking is available and the session adjusts when players join or leave. She also described mixed couch-and-online co-op as a new feature compared with the first game.
What you need before playing online
- A supported platform: Each player should be playing on a platform in the official FAQ list.
- A group of no more than four: The official materials describe groups of up to four players across online and couch co-op.
- Console online access: Minecraft says online console co-op requires that platform’s online subscription. The Xbox store listing names Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for Xbox console online multiplayer. The sources cited here do not establish the exact PlayStation or Nintendo subscription requirements.
- The game’s current friend or invite option: Use the options shown in the game to start or join a session. The official sources confirm cross-play and matchmaking but do not specify account-linking rules or a complete invitation sequence.
Joining friends across platforms
The official information establishes that cross-platform co-op is supported, but it does not give a reliable menu-by-menu walkthrough. Because button labels, account requirements and friend procedures are not specified in those sources, avoid relying on unofficial instructions that assume a particular menu or account setup. Open the game’s current multiplayer or friend interface and follow the displayed prompts; if an invite or join option is unavailable, check that everyone is on a listed platform and that console online access is active.
