But the official guidance reviewed here does not verify a supported way to display synchronized song lyrics on those screens. Audio playback and on-screen lyrics are separate features.
Can you display lyrics on a car screen without Apple CarPlay?
Possibly, but there is no documented, generally supported method established here. Android Auto can show compatible media apps, and some cars have their own media apps. That does not mean the app’s lyrics view is available on the vehicle display.
Spotify’s official lyrics guidance says lyric availability varies by market, device, song, and rights agreements. It explains how to view lyrics on mobile, tablet, desktop, and web player, but does not document a lyrics mode for a car display. Likewise, its in-car listening guidance lists ways to play Spotify in a vehicle, not ways to show its lyrics there.
What you can use to play music on the screen or speakers
Android Auto
If you have an Android phone and a compatible car or stereo, Android Auto is a potential screen-based way to access compatible media apps. Google’s instructions explain how to listen to media and download apps for Android Auto. They do not describe a lyrics view. An app appearing on the car display should not be taken as confirmation that its lyrics feature appears there.

A car’s built-in media system
Some vehicles include a Spotify app or support media apps through Google built-in. Availability and capabilities depend on the vehicle and region. Check the owner’s manual or ask the manufacturer whether your exact model supports the app and, separately, whether it supports lyrics on the display. Google’s guidance for cars with Google built-in covers media playback and Bluetooth, but notes that some apps may not be available on screen while using Bluetooth.
Bluetooth, AUX, or USB audio
Spotify lists Bluetooth, an AUX or USB cable, Android Auto, Spotify Connect, and some built-in car apps as ways to listen in the car. Bluetooth, AUX, and USB can carry audio when your phone and vehicle support the relevant connection. They are audio routes—not evidence that lyrics will appear on the car display.

Check Android Auto compatibility before connecting
Android Auto requires a compatible phone and a compatible vehicle or receiver; a USB port alone does not prove that a car supports it. Google’s current getting-started guidance specifies Android 9.0 or later and an active data plan for wired use, along with a compatible car and a high-quality USB cable. Wireless Android Auto has separate requirements, including a compatible phone and car or stereo, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Requirements can vary by region and hardware, so confirm them with Google and your vehicle manufacturer.
- Check your car or stereo. Use Google’s compatibility information and confirm support for your specific vehicle with its manufacturer.
- Choose a connection. Follow Google’s current wired or wireless requirements for your phone and receiver. For wired Android Auto, Google recommends a high-quality USB cable; its troubleshooting guidance suggests a cable shorter than one metre for connection reliability. A cable does not add lyrics support.
- Set up while parked. Google says to begin setup with the car in Park and the infotainment system on. Follow the on-screen prompts and the vehicle’s instructions.
- Open a compatible media app. Use the car display to select an app supported by Android Auto. This enables media playback, not a guaranteed lyrics view.
Keep setup and playback safe
Configure your connection and choose music while parked. Android Auto uses a simplified interface and applies safety lockouts to selected interactions; Google also recommends voice commands to reduce interaction with the display. Do not read or scroll lyrics while driving. Follow local laws, road conditions, and the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.
