Kirby’s Epic Yarn does not run on Nintendo Switch. The original game is a Wii release (also sold digitally for Wii U), while the expanded remake, Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn, is exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS family. To play one today, you need compatible Wii hardware and a disc or previously obtained Wii U entitlement, or a 3DS-family system with a cartridge or previously purchased digital copy.
The short answer: Switch is not a compatible platform
Nintendo’s official platform listings identify Kirby’s Epic Yarn as a Wii game, with a Wii U download version, and identify Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn as a Nintendo 3DS-family game released on 8 March 2019. There is no documented native Nintendo Switch release for either title.
Nintendo’s support guidance is explicit: Switch cannot play Nintendo 3DS or Wii U software, whether the software is packaged or downloaded. That rules out a Wii disc, a Wii U download, a 3DS cartridge, a 3DS download, and any Switch cartridge labeled with either game. A Switch alone is therefore insufficient.

The Wii version and the 3DS remake are related but not interchangeable. Choose the platform based on which edition you want and which original hardware you can access.

Which edition should you choose?
Choose the Wii original for the original presentation
The Wii release is the version titled Kirby’s Epic Yarn. A physical Wii disc is the most straightforward current route if you own a compatible Wii. The Wii U can also run its official download version, but only when the account already obtained that entitlement before the Wii U eShop stopped accepting new purchases.
Choose Extra Epic Yarn for portable play and added modes
Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn is the Nintendo 3DS remake. Nintendo’s 3DS product information specifically highlights Ravel Abilities, additional transformations, and Devilish Mode. Those features make it a distinct version rather than a simple release of the Wii game on a smaller screen.

How to play Kirby’s Epic Yarn on a Wii
This is the clearest route to the original game: a compatible Wii and a legitimate Kirby’s Epic Yarn Wii disc.

Use a Wii model that accepts Wii game discs. A Switch, Wii U without the game entitlement, or 3DS-family system is not a substitute for the Wii version.
- Obtain the correct disc. Search specifically for Kirby’s Epic Yarn for Wii. When buying a used copy, check the disc condition, case and label, seller reliability, and the region information shown in the listing. Do not assume that a listing for Extra Epic Yarn is the same game.
- Prepare the console. Connect the Wii to your television, power it on, and make sure the console can read Wii discs. If other Wii discs are not recognized, resolve the console or optical-drive problem before diagnosing the game.
- Insert the game disc. Place the disc in the Wii and wait for the system menu to identify it. Select the game channel to launch it.
- Play from the Wii version. The disc runs as Wii software; it does not become a Switch application and does not create a Switch-compatible download.
A physical Wii copy does not depend on a current Wii U eShop listing. That is why a disc and a working compatible Wii remain the practical way to obtain the original edition when you do not already own its Wii U download.

How to play the Wii U download version
Nintendo ended new Wii U eShop purchases on 27 March 2023. The shutdown does not erase software that an account already obtained: Nintendo says previously acquired games and downloadable content can still be redownloaded, and software updates remain available on Wii U.
- Use the Wii U account that obtained the game. The redownload route applies to an existing purchase entitlement, not to a new account trying to buy the title after the closure.
- Connect the Wii U to the internet and sign in. Use the console and account associated with the original purchase.
- Open the Wii U eShop’s redownload area. Locate the previously obtained Kirby’s Epic Yarn download in the account’s purchase or redownload history and start the download.
- Allow the download and any available update to finish. Nintendo’s support policy says previously obtained software and DLC can be redownloaded and that software updates remain available.
- Launch the game from the Wii U menu. The result is the Wii U download version of the Wii game, not a Switch conversion.
If the title is absent from the account’s redownload history, treat that as an ownership issue rather than evidence that a Switch version exists. A Wii U cannot newly purchase the game after the eShop purchase deadline.
How to play Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn on Nintendo 3DS
The remake requires a compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system. Your practical choices are a physical cartridge or a digital copy that was obtained before Nintendo stopped accepting new 3DS eShop purchases on 27 March 2023.

- Identify the edition. Look for Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn, not the Wii title Kirby’s Epic Yarn. The word “Extra” identifies the 3DS remake.
- Choose a copy type. Insert a physical cartridge into a compatible 3DS-family system, or use the system and account that previously purchased the digital version.
- For a digital copy, use the system’s redownload function. Sign in with the purchasing account, open the 3DS eShop redownload or purchase-history area, and select the previously obtained game.
- Start the title from the HOME Menu. A cartridge or redownloaded copy runs on the 3DS-family hardware for which it was released.
- Expect remake-specific content. Ravel Abilities, extra transformations, and Devilish Mode are features Nintendo calls out for Extra Epic Yarn; they are part of the remake’s identity.
Because new digital purchases are closed, a physical cartridge or an existing digital entitlement is the practical route. A Switch cannot use the cartridge, and moving the 3DS software to a Switch is not supported.

What the 2023 eShop shutdown means
The 27 March 2023 date applies to new purchases on both affected storefronts. It does not mean every previously purchased copy disappeared.
- Previously purchased Wii U software: Nintendo says it can still be redownloaded.
- Previously purchased Nintendo 3DS software: Nintendo says it can still be redownloaded.
- Previously purchased downloadable content: Nintendo says DLC can still be redownloaded.
- Software updates: Nintendo says updates remain available on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems.
- New purchases: You cannot rely on a current Wii U or 3DS eShop listing to acquire either game digitally for the first time.
Keep the distinction between “can redownload” and “can buy.” A title appearing in an account’s history is evidence of an existing entitlement; the absence of a purchase means the closed storefront cannot be used to create one now.
Buying a physical copy without choosing the wrong game
For the original
Use the product phrase Kirby’s Epic Yarn Wii. Verify that the listing identifies the Wii edition, not the 3DS remake, and inspect the disc condition and seller details. If the listing is for a used copy, confirm the console region information before ordering.

Use the product phrase Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn 3DS. Confirm that the item is a 3DS-family cartridge and that the listing does not describe a digital code whose redemption depends on a closed storefront.

Checks to make before purchase
- Match the exact title: Epic Yarn for Wii versus Extra Epic Yarn for 3DS.
- Match the hardware: Wii disc for Wii, 3DS cartridge for a 3DS-family system.
- Check photographs or seller descriptions for disc or cartridge condition.
- Check the seller’s return policy and reliability.
- Do not pay a premium for a claimed “Switch version” unless Nintendo has formally announced one; the platform support information described above rules out running the Wii U and 3DS releases on Switch.
Common situations and the correct fix
“I bought a Wii disc. Why does it not work in my Switch?”
The disc is Wii software, and Switch does not play Wii U or 3DS software; it also does not provide a Wii-disc compatibility layer. Use a compatible Wii with the disc.
“Can I download the Wii U version on Switch?”
No. A Wii U purchase entitlement is tied to Wii U software. Nintendo’s support statement excludes Wii U software on Switch, whether the copy was packaged or downloaded.
“I have the 3DS cartridge. Can I insert it into Switch?”
No. The cartridge is for Nintendo 3DS-family hardware. Use a compatible 3DS-family system.

New purchases ended on 27 March 2023. If you previously obtained the game, check the purchasing account’s redownload history. If you never bought it, look for a legitimate physical Wii disc or 3DS cartridge instead.

“I own the Wii U download but cannot find it.”
Confirm that the console is signed in with the account that originally obtained the title and inspect the account’s redownload or purchase-history section. The shutdown policy preserves redownloads for previous purchases, not purchases made by a different account.
“I found a listing that only says ‘Kirby’s Epic Yarn.’ Which system is it?”
Read the platform field carefully. The original title is associated with Wii, while the portable remake is titled Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn and is associated with Nintendo 3DS. A vague listing should not be treated as a Switch release.

The table describes platform compatibility, not account ownership. Even on the correct console, a digital copy still requires the account that previously obtained it, while a physical copy requires the matching disc or cartridge.

You want the original Wii experience
Choose a compatible Wii and a physical Kirby’s Epic Yarn Wii disc. This avoids dependence on a new Wii U eShop purchase, which is no longer possible.
You already owned the Wii U download
Keep using the Wii U account that bought it and redownload the game through the console’s purchase history. Nintendo’s post-shutdown policy continues to allow that redownload.
You want portable play and remake content
Choose Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn for a compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system. Use a cartridge, or redownload a digital copy already associated with your account.
You own only a Switch
There is no supported route using Switch alone. The Wii and 3DS releases require their original platform families, and Nintendo’s support documentation specifically excludes Wii U and 3DS software on Switch.
