You can play together across PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Switch only when the specific game supports the combination of platforms you use. Check the game’s current cross-play support, edition, account and online-subscription requirements first. If it has no native cross-play, a host-based option can still work: Steam Remote Play Together for local co-op PC games, Xbox Remote Play or PS Remote Play for streaming a console session, and PlayStation Share Play for supported PlayStation modes.
Remote streaming and voice chat solve different problems. Remote Play sends the game from a host device; Discord can carry voice or a screen share, but it cannot add cross-platform multiplayer to a game that does not support it.
Start with the exact game and the two platforms
Cross-play is a game-level feature, not a universal PlayStation, Xbox, PC or Nintendo setting. The same title may support PC-to-Xbox play but exclude PlayStation, or support cross-generation play while separating some editions. Before buying, downloading or troubleshooting anything, write down the exact game, each player’s platform and the edition installed on each device.
Compatibility questions to answer
- Is native cross-play listed? Look at the publisher’s support page or the game’s current store description, and check the supported platform pair rather than relying on a generic “multiplayer” label.
- Are both editions compatible? A PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Windows PC, Steam or cloud edition may have different multiplayer pools. Cross-generation play is available only in titles that explicitly support it.
- Do players need publisher accounts? Many games require a separate account to connect friends across storefronts. Create and link those accounts before sending an invitation.
- Is an online platform subscription required? Requirements vary by game, platform and mode. Check the game’s own support page for any PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo online-service requirement; do not assume that owning the game is enough.
- Does the mode support co-op? Cross-play may be available for matchmaking or competitive modes but not for the campaign, split-screen or a particular DLC package.
If any answer is unclear, do not promise compatibility to your friend yet. Confirm the title, region, edition and mode first; support can change after an update.

Choose the right way to connect
| Method | Best use | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Native cross-play | Both players own supported versions of the same game | The game must support the specific platforms, editions, accounts and online requirements. |
| Steam Remote Play Together | A Steam game has local co-op but no native online cross-play | The host PC runs the game and streams inputs and video; latency depends heavily on the host connection. |
| Xbox Remote Play | Streaming a game installed on an Xbox console to another compatible device | Requires an Xbox console with remote features enabled; Xbox lists a 10 Mbps internet connection, and some games or online multiplayer may require Game Pass. |
| PS Remote Play | Streaming a PS4 or PS5 session to a compatible device | Requires a PlayStation console and account plus a suitable network. Sony’s console-to-console setup uses the same PlayStation account on host and client. |
| PlayStation Share Play | Let another PlayStation user view, take control or play supported modes | It is a PlayStation-ecosystem feature, not universal cross-platform multiplayer, and supported modes determine what the visitor can do. |
| Nintendo GameShare | Sharing a supported game from a Switch 2 host | Online guests must use Switch 2; local wireless can include an original Switch, and a session can include up to four systems. |
| Discord voice or screen share | Communication when built-in chat is missing or unreliable | It adds voice or video only. It does not make an incompatible game cross-playable. |
Set up native cross-play
When the game supports your platform pair, native cross-play gives the most responsive result because each player runs the game locally or through the game’s own supported service.
- Install the matching supported edition. Compare the store listing and the publisher’s support page. Install any required cross-play or multiplayer update before inviting the other player.
- Finish account linking. Sign in to the game’s publisher account, if required, and link the correct PlayStation Network, Xbox, Nintendo or PC storefront identity. A friend request sent to a console username may not reach a player who must be added by a publisher ID.
- Enable cross-play in the game. Open the game’s Settings, Online, Network or Account menu and look for a Cross-play, Cross-platform or Matchmaking toggle. If the option is absent, the game may enable cross-play automatically or may not support it for that mode.
- Add your friend through the supported friend system. Use the in-game social menu when the title uses a unified account system. Accept the request on the other platform, then check that both names show as online.
- Choose the correct co-op mode. Create the campaign, private lobby or party that supports cross-platform play. A mode selector can silently restrict invitations to the host’s platform.
- Test a short session. Join the lobby, confirm that both players can hear one another and play for a few minutes, then adjust graphics, voice or network settings before starting a long campaign.
Cross-generation play is not automatic
Some games let a PS4 player join a PS5 player or an Xbox One player join an Xbox Series player, but only when the developer implements that path. The game may also require both players to use a particular version. Treat “same console family” as a question to verify, not a guarantee.
Current examples of native support
The Coalition announced in 2025 that Gears of War: Reloaded supports cross-play and cross-progression across Xbox, PC, cloud, PlayStation 5 and Steam, including two-player online campaign co-op. The announcement’s platform list is specific to that release and can change with later updates.

Use Steam Remote Play Together for local co-op PC games
Steam Remote Play Together is useful when a game offers local co-op or split-screen but no native online cross-play. One person owns and runs the game on a Windows, macOS or Linux computer; Steam sends the display and accepts the remote player’s controller or keyboard input. The visitor does not need to run the game locally, but the host PC does all game processing.
- Confirm the feature on Steam. Open the game’s store page and check that Remote Play Together is listed in the features. The game must expose a local multiplayer mode that the feature can share.
- Install and launch on the host computer. Update Steam and the game, connect the host controller, and start the local co-op mode.
- Invite the friend. Open the Steam overlay during the game, select the friend, and choose the Remote Play Together invitation. The friend accepts through Steam or the invitation notification.
- Assign inputs. In the Remote Play panel, allow the guest’s controller or keyboard and assign player slots in the game’s local-multiplayer screen. Disable guest keyboard or mouse control if it interferes with menus.
- Optimize the stream. If the picture stutters, have the host use Ethernet, pause downloads and reduce streaming quality or frame rate in Steam’s Remote Play settings. A fast download speed for the guest does not compensate for an unstable upload path from the host.
- End the session safely. Return to the Remote Play panel and disconnect the guest before quitting Steam. Remove input permission if the visitor should only watch.
Steam Link is related but different: it connects phones, tablets, TVs, computers and compatible VR headsets to a computer running Steam. It is a way to reach the host computer from another device, not a guarantee that a game has online multiplayer.

Stream an Xbox session with Xbox Remote Play
Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on an Xbox console to supported PCs, phones, tablets, TVs and VR headsets. Xbox lists a 10 Mbps internet connection requirement. The console must be configured for remote features, powered or available in its supported standby state, signed in and connected to the network. Xbox notes that some games or online multiplayer may require Game Pass.
- Prepare the console. Install the game and updates, sign in to the Xbox profile that owns or can launch it, and enable remote features in the console’s Settings under the device and connections or remote-play section. The exact label can vary by dashboard version.
- Check the network. Use a wired connection for the console when possible. Confirm that the console reaches Xbox services and that the client device meets the service’s current compatibility requirements.
- Open Xbox Remote Play on the client. Sign in with the account authorized to use the console, select the console and start the stream. Pair a controller with the client device before launching the game.
- Start the co-op mode. If the game supports local co-op, the host can connect additional controllers to the Xbox and play in the streamed session. If the friend is meant to join as a separate online player, the game still needs its own supported online mode and accounts; Remote Play does not create that mode.
- React to lag. Stop other high-bandwidth activity, move the client closer to Wi-Fi access point or use Ethernet, and lower stream quality if the option is available. Persistent disconnects point to the console or host network rather than the game’s cross-play setting.
Use PS Remote Play or Share Play on PlayStation
PS Remote Play
PS Remote Play streams PS4 and PS5 games to compatible devices. Sony’s console-to-console instructions require the same PlayStation account on the host and client and recommend high-speed internet. That makes Remote Play primarily a way for an authorized player to access a console session remotely; it is not a substitute for a game’s native cross-play service.
- Enable Remote Play on the console. On PS5, open Settings, System, Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. On PS4, use Settings, Remote Play Connection Settings and enable the feature. Keep the console updated and configured for rest mode if you want to wake it remotely.
- Install the Remote Play app. Use the supported app on the PC, phone, tablet or other compatible device, then sign in with the PlayStation account associated with the console.
- Pair a controller and connect. Start the app, select the PS4 or PS5 and wait for the console session to appear. A wired connection or strong Wi-Fi reduces delay.
- Launch the game and select its multiplayer mode. Any additional player still has to satisfy the game’s local or online multiplayer rules. If a friend is on another platform, Remote Play alone cannot bypass the title’s cross-play policy.
PlayStation Share Play
Share Play can let another PlayStation user view your game, take control of your session or play together in supported modes even when only one participant owns the game. Both users must be in the PlayStation ecosystem, and the game determines whether “play with the visitor” is available. Start a party, choose Share Play, select the visitor and pick the available mode; end the session from the same party controls when finished.

Understand Nintendo GameShare limits
Nintendo GameShare requires a Switch 2 host for online sharing. Nintendo says online guests must also use Switch 2. Local wireless sharing can include an original Switch, and a session can include up to four systems. Therefore, a Switch 2 owner cannot use GameShare online to invite an original Switch owner; use the title’s own multiplayer support or a local-wireless arrangement when the game allows it.
- Update every system. Install the game, GameShare-compatible update and current system software on the host and guests.
- Start GameShare from the host. Open the game’s GameShare option and create the session. Keep the host Switch 2 nearby for local wireless play or online as required by the mode.
- Join with the supported systems. Online participants use Switch 2 systems. For local wireless, add compatible original Switch systems until the four-system limit is reached.
- Check the game’s player rules. GameShare does not guarantee that every mode, save type or downloadable-content feature can be shared.
Keep voice and video separate from gameplay
Use the game’s built-in chat when it works reliably. When players are split across platforms, Discord voice chat can provide one room for everyone. Discord’s Go Live and Screen Share can share an application window or the whole screen in a voice channel or call; Discord documentation updated June 19, 2026 says, “Up to 50 people can share their video or screen at a time in a Discord voice chat.” That capacity is far beyond a normal two-player session, but screen sharing still consumes bandwidth.

Remember the boundary: Discord can coordinate players and show a stream, but it cannot provide matchmaking, synchronize saves or make a PlayStation-only game playable with an Xbox friend.
Fix the most common failures
The friend cannot be invited
- Recheck the exact title, edition and mode. Cross-play may be limited to one mode or disabled for a particular generation.
- Confirm that both players completed publisher-account linking and accepted the correct in-game friend request.
- Install pending game updates and restart the game after changing the cross-play setting.
- Check parental controls, privacy settings and region restrictions that can hide invitations.
- If the game still shows no cross-platform option, switch to a host-based method that fits the title instead of repeatedly reinstalling it.
The stream is blurry, delayed or disconnects
- Test the host’s upload and client’s download paths, not just the internet plan’s advertised maximum.
- Connect the host console or PC by Ethernet where possible; remove competing downloads, cloud backups and video streams.
- Lower stream resolution or frame rate until controller response is stable, then increase quality gradually.
- Restart the game, streaming app and router. Update the app and device firmware before testing again.
- For Xbox Remote Play, compare the connection with Xbox’s published 10 Mbps requirement. Meeting that number does not guarantee low latency, but falling below it is a clear reason to improve the connection.
Voice chat echoes or has no sound
- Choose the intended headset or microphone explicitly in the game and Discord rather than leaving an unavailable device selected.
- Mute television or monitor speakers near an open microphone, and use headphones when possible.
- Check operating-system microphone permissions and the game’s voice-chat mute and party settings.
- Move voice chat to Discord if the game’s cross-platform chat cannot connect, but keep gameplay invitations in the game’s own system.
Discord screen share is black or stutters
Discord’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the internet connection, using a wired connection when possible, restarting and updating the app, checking screen-recording permissions, disabling hardware acceleration if streams lag, lowering stream quality or frame rate, and verifying that a headset or headphones are connected. Test an application window instead of the entire screen when capture permissions or performance are the problem.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-session checklist
- Game title, edition and platform pair confirmed on the current support page.
- Cross-play, local co-op or Share Play mode identified.
- Publisher and platform accounts linked; friend request accepted in the correct system.
- Required online subscription or Game Pass entitlement checked for the chosen mode.
- Host console or PC updated, game installed and remote features enabled if streaming.
- Controller, microphone and headset tested before the invitation.
- Host on Ethernet or strong Wi-Fi, competing downloads paused and stream quality set conservatively.
- Backup plan chosen: Steam Remote Play Together, Xbox Remote Play, PS Remote Play, Share Play or Nintendo GameShare only when the game and hardware meet that method’s requirements.
