For most players, DuckStation is the simplest starting point: download it from the official project, follow its setup wizard, connect a compatible controller if you want one, then load a PlayStation disc or supported game image. Check the PC requirements first, and note that a BIOS and game data are separate from the emulator and are not supplied by DuckStation.

Choose an emulator

DuckStation is the best fit for most players who want a ready-to-run PS1 emulator. Its project describes a focus on accuracy and game support, offers builds for major desktop platforms, and documents a setup wizard plus disc and image workflows. Those features make it a practical default, not a guarantee that every RPG will work flawlessly.

PCSX-Redux is an alternative for developers and technically minded users interested in debugging, research, or reverse engineering. Its project says it remains in progress and has not reached its first stable release, so it is less straightforward as a general-purpose starting point.

Check whether your PC meets DuckStation’s stated requirements

These are requirements published by the DuckStation project, not independent performance benchmarks. On Windows, the project specifies Windows 10 or 11, version 1809 or newer. Its listed CPU architectures are x86-64, AArch32/ARMv7, AArch64/ARMv8, and RISC-V/RV64. For hardware rendering, it lists OpenGL 3.1, OpenGL ES 3.1, Direct3D 11 Feature Level 10.0, or Vulkan 1.0 graphics support.

Check the current documentation for your operating system and graphics hardware before troubleshooting. Requirements and release details can change; DuckStation’s official repository is the project source for current information.

Download and start DuckStation

  1. Open the official DuckStation project repository and use its linked release for your operating system. Avoid third-party download bundles.
  2. On Windows, use the installer or archive workflow described in the project README.
  3. Launch DuckStation and follow the on-screen setup wizard.

Set up a controller, if you want one

A separate controller is optional. DuckStation lists SDL-, XInput-, or DirectInput-compatible controllers, and its bindings can be changed under Settings → Controllers. The exact mapping depends on your device.

Sony documents DualSense USB and Bluetooth connections for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. Available features can vary by device and connection; see PlayStation’s PC gaming support page for its connection guidance.

Start a game from a disc or image

DuckStation documents both direct disc playback and game-image workflows. Select the appropriate source in the emulator and choose a game you have obtained lawfully under the rules that apply where you live.

Some PAL-region games use LibCrypt protection and may need matching CD subchannel information in an SBI file. This does not apply to every PS1 game. For an affected title, DuckStation says to place the matching SBI file beside the image and give it the same base name. The project also supports CHD images that include subchannel information. Consult the DuckStation documentation for the supported workflow.

Understand the BIOS and game-data distinction

An emulator is software; a BIOS and a game image or disc are separate data. DuckStation says it does not supply a retail BIOS. The project pages and other sources cited here do not establish the rules for obtaining or copying BIOS or game data in every jurisdiction. Follow your local laws, and do not assume that owning an original disc automatically authorizes every copying or circumvention step.

What to do if a game does not start

  • Check system support: compare your operating system, CPU architecture, and graphics support with DuckStation’s current requirements.
  • Confirm the game source: try the documented disc or image workflow and verify that the file is accessible to the emulator.
  • Check for LibCrypt: if the game is an affected PAL title, confirm that its matching SBI file is beside the image with the same base name, or use a supported CHD image containing subchannel information.
  • Revisit input settings: if the game launches but the controller does not behave as expected, open Settings → Controllers and review its bindings.

Compatibility is title-specific. The project information cited here does not establish that every classic RPG runs without issues, so consult current DuckStation documentation for a particular game rather than assuming universal compatibility.
