To play a classic console on a modern TV, match the console’s video output to an input on the TV. Use a direct cable when the connectors and signal formats match; if they do not, use a compatible analog-to-HDMI converter or retro gaming scaler. Check both devices’ ports and manuals first, because available connections and required adapters vary by model.
1. Identify the console’s output and the TV’s inputs
Check the console’s ports, cable, and manual, then inspect the TV itself. Common older-console connections include composite AV, component video, SCART in some regions, and RF. The available ports vary by console, region, and television model; Sony’s connection guidance and model-specific instructions show why it is worth checking the exact equipment rather than assuming every TV has the same inputs.
Composite AV
Composite typically uses a yellow plug for video and red and white plugs for stereo audio. Sony identifies red as right audio and white as left audio. Connect the plugs to matching TV inputs, or to the manufacturer’s breakout lead if the TV uses a smaller proprietary connector.

Component is a separate video format from composite. Use it only when the console and TV both support component video, with the matching cable and inputs. Do not assume a cable that fits one format will work with the other.

2. Choose the connection that fits

A general guide to choosing the strongest available signal and converting it to HDMI is available from Pound Technology. Treat generic converter descriptions as a starting point, not proof that a device supports your exact console and TV.
3. Connect the console and select the TV input
- Turn off the console and TV before connecting cables.
- Connect the console’s video cable to the matching TV input, or to the compatible converter’s input. Connect audio as well if it uses separate plugs.
- If the TV requires a manufacturer-provided breakout lead, connect that lead to the TV and attach the console cable to it.
- For a converter, connect its HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input and provide the converter’s required power.
- Turn on the TV and console, then select the TV input corresponding to the connected port. For NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition, make sure the USB power source is switched on.
4. If the picture or sound does not work
Start with the simplest connection and check the likely mismatch points before adding an AV receiver or switch:

- Confirm that the TV is set to the input where the cable is connected.
- Check that video and audio plugs are in their matching inputs and that the cable is connected in the correct direction.
- Verify that the console, TV, and any powered converter are on.
- Check whether the TV needs a model-specific breakout adapter.
- If you are using a converter, verify that it accepts the console’s exact signal format and mode and handles its audio output.
- Test the console directly with a matching TV input if one is available. This helps isolate whether the converter or an added switch is part of the problem.
These are basic checks, not a guaranteed fix for every setup; consult the manuals for the exact console, TV, and converter when compatibility remains unclear.

5. Set expectations for picture and responsiveness
A converter and a scaler are not interchangeable just because both can connect analog equipment to HDMI. Verify what each device accepts and whether it scales the picture. A higher-quality input path or purpose-built scaler may be useful, but the available manufacturer guidance and general specialist advice do not establish model-by-model image quality or latency. Do not rely on claims such as “zero lag” or universal compatibility without evidence for the particular device and setup.
