You can play CDs without buying a standalone CD player: use a computer with a built-in optical drive, add an external USB CD/DVD drive to a computer, or check whether a DVD or Blu-ray player you already own supports audio CDs. If you want to listen on different devices, rip the discs to audio files instead. The best route depends on what equipment you have and whether you want to play a physical disc now or build a file library for later.
Choose the route that fits your equipment
| What you have | Practical route | Check before you start |
|---|---|---|
| Computer with a built-in CD/DVD drive | Play the disc with compatible software, or rip its tracks to files. | Confirm that the drive reads CDs and that the computer has suitable playback or ripping software. |
| Computer without a disc drive | Connect an external USB CD/DVD drive to the computer. | Check the drive’s CD-reading capability, USB connection, and operating-system support. |
| DVD or Blu-ray player | Play the audio CD directly if the exact model supports it. | Check the player manual for audio CD support and confirm its audio output can connect to your sound system. |
| Compatible USB player or car stereo | Rip CDs to files, then transfer them to a USB flash drive. | Verify that the destination supports USB music playback and the selected audio format. |
Play a CD on a computer you already own
First check older laptops and desktop computers for a built-in optical drive. If yours reads audio CDs, use compatible software to play the disc through the computer’s speakers, headphones, or connected audio equipment. The available output depends on the computer and the listening equipment you have.
You can also use the computer to copy tracks to files. Microsoft Support defines the process this way: “When you copy music, pictures, and videos from a CD or DVD to your PC, it’s called ‘ripping.’” Its Burn and rip CDs guide explains how to rip an audio CD with Windows Media Player: insert the disc in the PC’s CD drive and select Rip CD.
Add an external USB drive if the computer has no disc slot
An external USB CD/DVD optical drive is the straightforward add-on for a computer without a built-in drive. Once connected to a compatible computer, it can provide the drive needed for computer-based playback or ripping. Before buying, confirm that the drive reads CDs, works with the computer’s operating system, and connects to an available USB port. A USB optical drive is generally a computer accessory, not a standalone player; do not assume it will work when plugged into any phone, TV, car, or stereo.

Connecting an optical drive directly to a TV is possible only in specific setups. LG’s US support guide, dated November 14, 2023, describes connecting a compatible USB optical drive that supports TV connection mode to a compatible LG TV, switching the drive’s mode, and selecting content. LG warns that some discs may be incompatible and that its TVs do not decode some protected discs. See LG’s USB DVD-drive connection instructions and check the instructions for your exact TV and drive before relying on this method.
Check whether a DVD or Blu-ray player can play audio CDs
A video disc player may already solve the problem. Sony’s guidance lists audio CD and CD-R/CD-RW playback for its Blu-ray players, but support depends on the player and the disc. Look up the exact model’s manual and confirm that it plays audio CDs. Then check that the player’s audio output can connect to your TV, receiver, powered speakers, or other listening system. Sony’s Blu-ray player disc compatibility guidance is a useful starting point, not a guarantee for every model.

If you would rather play ripped files from a USB drive, check separately for USB playback and support for the file type you plan to use. Sony says not all of its Blu-ray and media players have USB functionality; unsupported file types and corrupted files will not play. Its USB device and file compatibility guidance recommends checking device specifications and supported formats.
Rip CDs when you want a portable music library
Ripping takes more setup than playing a disc, but it creates files you can organize on a computer and transfer to a compatible phone or other device. In Windows Media Player, Microsoft’s guide says to insert the audio CD in the PC’s CD drive and choose Rip CD. It lists WMA, WAV, and MP3 as output formats and explains how to change the format and audio quality for new tracks. Internet access can enable automatic lookup of album, artist, and track information. See Microsoft’s ripping instructions.

Choose a format your destination device and playback software support. A USB flash drive can carry ripped music to a compatible player or car stereo, but a USB socket alone does not establish that the device will play music files. Check the destination’s specifications for both USB music playback and supported formats.
Understand the disc-capacity figures
Microsoft Support describes an audio CD as holding up to 80 minutes of music. It describes a data CD as about 700 MB, or roughly eight hours of music, and a data DVD as about 4.7 GB, or roughly 54 hours. The data-disc playback figures depend on the player supporting the files on the disc. These are Microsoft’s approximate capacity descriptions, not tested listening times or a guarantee for every encoding and disc. See Microsoft’s capacity and ripping guide.

Make the decision based on convenience and compatibility
- Want to listen to a physical disc right away? Try an existing computer drive or a DVD/Blu-ray player whose manual confirms audio CD support.
- Have a computer without a drive? An external USB CD/DVD drive is the clearest way to add one for playback or ripping on a compatible computer.
- Want to listen across devices or browse a searchable library? Rip the CDs, select a supported format, and transfer the files to compatible devices.
- Considering a TV or car USB connection? Treat it as model-specific. Check the TV or stereo documentation and verify both device support and file-format compatibility.
There is no basis here to say that a computer drive, video disc player, or ripped file sounds better than the others. Choose based on the equipment you own, the connections available, and whether you prefer handling discs or organizing files.
