You can play Burnout 3: Takedown online on a retail original Xbox by connecting the console to Insignia, Microsoft’s former Xbox Live replacement service. The practical route is: update the dashboard to D:1.00.5960.01, run Insignia’s Setup Assistant, register the console, configure networking, create an Insignia gamertag, and then select Xbox Live inside the game. Burnout 3 supports races and other online modes for up to seven players, although the number of people available at any moment varies by region and time.
What Insignia restores on an original Xbox
Insignia is a replacement for the original Xbox online service. It restores matchmaking, leaderboards and other Xbox Live functions for compatible games without requiring Microsoft’s original servers. The service is available at insignia.live, and the account and console-registration process described below is intended for retail Xbox hardware.
The supported-games catalog changes as titles are added and service data changes. An Insignia homepage snapshot from 2026 reported 213 supported games, but that number should not be treated as permanent. Check the current supported-games directory before buying, modifying or recommending a game.

Burnout 3: Takedown is listed as supported under serial EA-091 and title ID 4541005B. Burnout 2 – Point of Impact is also listed. Support is title-specific, so a game that looks similar to a listed release is not automatically covered.

What you need before starting
Console and game
- A retail original Xbox. Insignia works with stock consoles and many softmodded or hardmodded systems.
- Burnout 3: Takedown for the original Xbox, or another title shown in the current Insignia catalog.
- A modded system must use a compatible retail-oriented setup. Devkit and debug BIOSes or consoles are not supported.
Dashboard and storage
- The latest original Xbox dashboard. In Settings → System Info, the version should read
D:1.00.5960.01. - For an unmodified Xbox, an Xbox-to-USB adapter and an Xbox-compatible USB flash drive of 4GB or less.
- The current stock Setup Assistant package and a FATX storage tool for preparing or copying files to the Xbox-compatible drive.
- For a modded Xbox, the appropriate Setup Assistant package and an FTP client. Older softmods or BIOSes that block Xbox Live functions may need to be upgraded.
Network and account
- A working broadband network connection. Ethernet is preferable because original Xbox Live networking is peer-to-peer and sensitive to latency.
- An email address for the Insignia account and access to the CAPTCHA during registration.
- A way to read the email containing the subscription code used by the Xbox dashboard signup flow.
A console with a nulled hard-drive key cannot connect until its key is corrected. Check this before attempting registration on a modified machine.
Confirm the game and release you intend to use
Open Insignia’s current supported-games list and verify the exact title and regional release. This matters because support is recorded against particular game data, not merely a franchise name. The known Burnout entries are:

Insignia’s live activity pages can show no active Burnout 3 players even while the game remains supported. Treat support and current activity as separate questions: the first is a service-compatibility decision, while the second changes continuously.

Step 1: Check and update the Xbox dashboard
- Turn on the Xbox and open Settings.
- Select System Info and read the dashboard version.
- Continue only when the version is
D:1.00.5960.01. An older dashboard can lack the Xbox Live components that Insignia’s registration process expects. - On a stock console, insert a supported game, boot it, choose Xbox Live, and follow the update path if the dashboard offers one. Allow the update to finish before removing power.
Do not confuse the game’s own title update with the dashboard requirement. The version shown in System Info is the check that determines whether the console software is current enough for the Setup Assistant workflow.
Step 2: Run Insignia’s Setup Assistant
Stock Xbox procedure
- Prepare the Xbox-to-USB adapter and a compatible flash drive no larger than 4GB.
- Use a FATX storage tool to copy the stock Setup Assistant package to the drive in the layout specified by the package.
- Connect the adapter and drive to the Xbox and launch the one-time exploit that starts the assistant.
- Follow the on-screen prompts until the assistant reports that it has completed its console-side work.
The small application is designed to register the console with Insignia. Keep the Xbox connected to the network while it runs, and avoid interrupting the process during registration.
Modded Xbox procedure
- Download or obtain the Setup Assistant package intended for your modded configuration.
- Connect to the Xbox with an FTP client using the normal homebrew file-transfer method for that console.
- Place the supplied
default.xbewhere your dashboard or launcher can run it. - Launch
default.xbeand complete the assistant’s prompts.
If the assistant will not start, an old softmod, an incompatible BIOS or a dashboard configuration that disables Xbox Live functions is a more likely cause than the game disc. Upgrade the mod using its documented path before trying again. Devkit and debug systems remain outside Insignia’s supported hardware.

Step 3: Register the console
- Inside Setup Assistant, choose Register.
- Wait for the confirmation message. Most users only need to press Register and allow the assistant to finish.
- Exit the assistant after confirmation; do not repeatedly create registrations for the same console.
Registration associates the console with Insignia. It is separate from creating your player account, so a successful registration does not yet produce a gamertag.
Step 4: Test networking and resolve DNS issues
- Exit Setup Assistant and return to the original Xbox dashboard.
- Open Settings → Network Settings and run the connection test.
- Confirm that the Xbox reaches the network and that the test does not report DNS hijacking.
- If the documented DNS-hijacking condition appears, use Insignia’s local
insigniaDNSworkaround. The connection guide lists primary DNS46.101.64.175and suggests8.8.8.8or1.1.1.1as the secondary DNS value. - Run the test again after saving the settings.
Ethernet is the best first choice for troubleshooting. Wireless adapters can add latency, packet loss or inconsistent peer-to-peer sessions, making it harder to tell whether a registration problem is actually a network problem.
Step 5: Request the subscription code and activate an account
- On a modern device, open insignia.live and register an email address.
- Complete the CAPTCHA and submit the request.
- Open the email from Insignia and retrieve the code. Check spam or filtered folders if it does not appear promptly.
- Return to the original Xbox dashboard and start the Xbox Live signup flow.
- Select your region, accept the terms, and choose an available gamertag.
- Enter the emailed code when prompted and complete account activation.
The guide’s signup flow shows a £0.00 purchase screen and describes the service as free. The code is used to activate the dashboard account; it is not a retail Xbox Live subscription.

Step 6: Start Burnout 3 online
- Insert or launch Burnout 3: Takedown after the dashboard account is active.
- Choose Xbox Live from the game’s main menu.
- Select matchmaking or the online mode you want to play.
- Invite or meet other players through the game’s available session options, then begin the event.
The original game manual says: “Take the challenge online and join up to seven players in Burnout 3: Takedown’s exciting online modes.” That is the game’s designed maximum, not a promise that seven people will be available in every lobby.
Why a supported game can have an empty lobby
Insignia support means the service can provide the required online functions; it does not guarantee a permanent population. Burnout 3 activity changes with time zone, day and community events. A live page may show zero active players while the title remains fully supported.

- Check community events or current activity pages when you want public opponents.
- Use the game’s host or invite options when random matchmaking does not find anyone.
- Remember that peer-to-peer networking makes the host’s connection and geographic distance important to everyone in the match.
How to evaluate other original Xbox games on Insignia
Do not assume that every original Xbox Live title will work. Insignia’s FAQ does not provide a concrete timetable for adding a particular unsupported game, so verify the catalog instead of relying on rumors or franchise-wide assumptions.

For any alternative game, check four things in this order:
- Exact release: Confirm that the regional edition, title ID or other listed entry matches your disc or installed copy.
- Online mode and capacity: Identify whether the game offers matchmaking, private sessions, leaderboards or another online feature, and how many players it was designed to support.
- Current activity: Look at live player information or arrange a scheduled session. A supported game can still have no public opponents.
- Extra requirements: Check whether the title needs downloadable content, a particular title update, special files or a mod-compatible configuration.

Troubleshooting common failures
There is no Xbox Live option
Open Settings → System Info and verify D:1.00.5960.01. If the dashboard is older, boot a supported game on the stock console and select Xbox Live to trigger the update route. Recheck System Info after the update.
Setup Assistant registration fails
- Confirm that the console is connected and passes the dashboard network test.
- Run Register again only after checking that the assistant reached its completion screen.
- On a modified Xbox, verify that the system is not using a nulled hard-drive key. Correct the key before attempting registration.
- Replace an unsupported devkit or debug BIOS with a compatible retail configuration; those systems are not supported by Insignia.
The connection test reports DNS hijacking
Apply Insignia’s documented local insigniaDNS workaround, using primary DNS 46.101.64.175 and secondary 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1. Save the settings and rerun Network Settings’ connection test.

- Connect the Xbox by Ethernet rather than through a wireless adapter.
- Reduce competing traffic on the home network and address router NAT or latency problems.
- Test with another player or host to determine whether the issue follows one connection.
- Do not interpret an empty lobby as a server outage until you have checked current activity and arranged a controlled session.
The game is listed, but my copy does not connect
Recheck the exact regional release and identifier in the supported-games directory. Then verify the dashboard version, console registration and any title-update or downloadable-content requirement shown for that game. A listing for one release does not establish support for every regional or altered copy.
Keeping the setup usable
Once the console is registered, avoid changing the dashboard, BIOS or hard-drive key without first checking compatibility. Keep a copy of the working Setup Assistant files and record the network settings that passed the connection test. Before buying another original Xbox title for online play, check the live catalog again because supported games and player counts are dynamic.
For Burnout 3 specifically, the reliable expectation is a functioning original Xbox Live mode with a designed capacity of up to seven players, not a guaranteed public lobby. A stock console with the current dashboard, completed registration, a valid Insignia account and a low-latency network is the least complicated path.
